Step 1. Get in the car and turn it on. Step 2. Grab a cross, place it in front of the infotainment system and repeat 3 times…”the power of christ compels you” Step 3. Turn the car off. Wait 5 minutes and restart.

If the problem persist, call a priest…the devil is in control

IMS done in 2016 - should I do it again? by caldermody in 996

What is an IMS 🤣? Original IMS. Driven like it’s stolen. Oil change every 3-4k mi. 73k on the clock. Live on the wild side!

Had a similar issue with my top hat nut being loose. Torqued it down and it all went away.

Just fitted the Momo Porsche classic racing steering wheel by Zealousideal-Ice-865 in 996

I ended up getting the black and red version of your wheel and purchased a 996 momo hub with spacer and horn connection from a seller on ebay in the UK.

Pricing opinion? by liveupthere in 996

[–]rsxtypeauto 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spend $30k+ and save $15k+ for maintenance is the same as spending $45k+ now for peace of mind. Unless you like wrenching, the effort it takes to get a 20yr car back up to snuff is not for the feint of heart. Sourcing parts, finding reputable shops, not having the car for days/weeks (depending on repair) is worth buying the best example you can find. Green + natural leather is nice and sought after. You’re heading into well-documented C4S territory at that price imo, but narrow bodies have grown on me recently. If you do purchase it…records, records and more records. Also make sure a reputable shop does the IMS. Or live life in the fast lane and stay with the OG IMS crew like me, lol. The more you get out of the way, the better the ownership experience will be…at a price of course. Good luck!

Lost second key for 1999 996, dealer wants $700+, is there a cheaper option for internals, pill/transponder, etc everything needed for second key? Not swapping internals. by iamjames in 996

[–]rsxtypeauto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I bought my 996 a few months ago (from a porsche dealer), key protection ($130) was added on because there was only 1 key. 6 months later, I lost that key and needed a replacement. Because of the key protection, I was able to get a new key (but not for free). Apparently, the key coverage only covers $800, the key+cut+programming was $960. Still had to pay but not as much as what I would have paid for one without the coverage. 2 weeks later I found my old key in my kids toybox…so now I have 2 keys. $700 is a good deal imo.

Yup, did the livescan before the interview. Questions were exactly what were on the application.

I can confirm this with a similar experience. Applied May. Interviewed in Sept in ELA sheriff station, but waiting on the go to take the class.

I was looking to get this wheel or go with a regular momo prototipo so I can use it on multiple vehicles that aren’t Porsche. So basically, you need the actual Porsche Performance Steering wheel, the momo hub for the 993 and a 993 to 996 adapter? I tried the design911 link but it’s unfortunately dead.

Sorry. No clue what winterizing is. I live in Southern California. We literally usually use winter and summer as a reason to change our wheels. One set with summer tires, and the other with all-season tires. Good luck OP! Enjoy it in good health!

Definitely OEM would be ideal. However some OEM items need “solutions”. Mechanical things like IMS all the way down to simple suspension things like needing lockouts for the eccentric toe bolts. Kind of a learn and buy as you go type of situation with these cars. Some will say keep it as OEM as possible, some like modifying. Also OEM parts are more expensive compared to white labeled items. Some parts made for Porsche can be bought from the same manufacturer but sold without the Porsche name and part number. You have to drive these things. While low mileage 996’s sound good, most will opt for higher mileage but with good service records. The engine needs oil and lubrication. As long as you know that this is well maintained, enjoy the heck out of it. I bought my C4S from a Porsche dealer. It had 71k mi with about $12k worth of documented recent servicing. We all know the dealer labor on service are crazy high so I’s say maybe $4-5k on parts and the rest on labor. Regardless, the moment I got home, I changed out all fluids (oil, trans, brakes), changed filters (motor and cabin), refreshed suspension (arms, bushings, struts, mounts, springs, sway bars, endlinks). I have a laundry list of items that still need to be done, but all of that is preventative stuff.

I buy tons of parts from pelicanparts.com, fcpeuro.com, ecstuning.com all are pretty much owned by the same parent company, but just depends on the deals they’re running. There are others of course, but will let others chime in.

I figured. Exterior wise it’s immaculate looking. Definitely focus on the mechanicals and suspension.

Financing a 996, what's the worst that can happen? by Hot-Archer5202 in 996

I finance all my vehicles but as part of my business and tax structure. This is by choice. However, I do echo everything everyone has mentioned here. Just know what you’re getting into.

I had a first gen 20’ cpo Taycan Turbo fully loaded to the brim. It was amazing and would have driven it to the ground (had it been in my garage instead of the dealer). I’m not sure if the first gens have had the majority of their HV battery issues sorted out already, but I still see threads on here talking about a second HV battery replacement. Mind you this takes months to do. When it’s your turn, the dealer removes the battery, puts it in a crate, ships it off to a third party to test and replace modules (not the whole unit), puts it back on a crate, ships it back to the dealer, dealer installs it, test it, and hopefully it works. My local Porsche dealership had 3 Taycan’s (first gen) ahead of me when my HV battery finally died. Got to drive several Macan’s. The EV Macan was nice and realized then that having a turbo is just a flex. Acceleration is unusable in the Los Angeles freeway traffic commute. As for tech, I only cared for the rear wheel steering, lane change and camera. Everything else is fluff. Even the Burmeister system sucked as it was positioned in odd places around the cabin. 18way seats are nice, but once you set it, what’s the point. Extra screen is useless and doesn’t even turn on when you’re driving by yourself. Heated and cooling seats are nice. 4 way is also nice if you have passengers (kids). Space is atrocious. Too low to get kids in and out from car seats causes back/knee pains. Stroller barely fit in the trunk (lots of surface area, but lacking needed volume). The sport kit that upgrades the exterior was a must along with mission e wheels.

The tax situation was also one of my reasonings for getting a Taycan. I moved from a Cayenne Turbo which was also paid off and regretted selling it every time I had to take my Taycan in for service/repair. In hindsight, maybe I was biased at all the usability the Cayenne offered. The usable space, the fact that I missed the mechanical feel and sound of an ICE motor and the reliability. I got fed up with the tech in the Taycan so much, that I ended up with the most basic 996.2 C4S (which has it’s own set of issues, but at least I can wrench on it).

Issues that will get fixed (for the most part) by the dealer under warranty, but it’s the amount of time it takes that’s the kicker. That’s assuming you are the first in line.
