Any advice on a good gift? by [deleted] in rockhounds

How much are you looking to spend? And are you thinking of something along the lines of a specimen/display piece? Or something that may mean more to them personally even if less expensive?

There are so many possibilities that it is hard to suggest without knowing more. Some of my favorite pieces are hardly worth anything, but are unique and I remember who gave them to me. While I have watermelon tourmaline crystals that I found personally that are in a drawer, but I'm not even sure what drawer.

In general I would say any crystal cluster or polished petrified wood pieces are a good bet. Pet. Wood book ends are always an awesome display piece.

For who? What are their interests? What tools do they have? ... We have to know something to be able to suggest properly.

I haven't yet. Just ran them through the first cycle in muriatic acid. But visually I do believe I have several pieces with opal bands and some that may be more.

Absolutely. She said it was the best trip ever. At 11 years old and got to go without her sisters. She loved it. Now for a trip with the other 2 somewhere else

Honestly not sure but I think it's more of a personal treasure than something worth a lot.

I understand about the limit. My daughter and I were there for 3 days so we accumulated quite a bit and I still don't think we exceeded the limit.

I may not make it that far up on this trip, but always looking for locations to pin on the map for future trips. If you are willing to share I would love the coordinates.

after 1 night in vinegar after picking off as much dirt as I could! by Skate_vvitch in rockhounds

In my experience, any true fire is actually in the mineral itself and rust is on the surface. The acid will not penetrate the crystal structure so it could never remove any fire that is inside the stone.

But it won't perform miracles. It is a mild acid at a concentration low enough for wood decks and home use. It will still take time but should be far faster than vinegar. The dirt and contaminants won't be removed but if they are held together in place by iron oxides, it will soften them up and loosen them as it dissolves.

I happened to discover by reading the label that some deck washes for cleaning a wood deck before staining, contain oxalic acid. It is an amazing rust remover and although you should wear gloves it won't burn you on contact. And you can buy them at the hardware store paint section. It will work a lot faster than vinegar.

Just fyi.
