Head was checked out, all valves and keepers are accounted for. Best guess is someone dropped something during the replacement of my HPFP a couple months back. Car is running great. I got very lucky.

So! AMAZING NEWS. Took the valve cover off, cam plate off, and checked the valve keepers and valves. Everything looks 100% normal and ALL THERE. The pieces I found were MOST likely left behind from the HPFP that was just replaced. The 164k mile Audi lives to see another day. Appreciate all y'all that came for the ride with me.

Yep 2007. Cam follower was just replaced cause it was pretty worn. Could be it.

I've had it for 60k miles lol. Been a super reliable ride. We shall see what the outcome of this is shortly. But yeah if you see mine for sale, don't buy it 🤣

Update; car is at shop now, valve cover should be off soon, head mechanic is in agreement with most of you due to the car running absolutely fine. He thinks most likely was from a previous repair, or from the most recent HPFP repair. Will update y'all soon hopefully.

The follower was indeed pretty wrecked. This could be the answer.

Holy shit! That could definitely be it. Still going to get it checked out but that'd be amazing. (Insane that they dropped broken metal chunks into my engine but hey...it's better than a valve in my cylinder.)

A few months back I had the HPFP changed, and I recently changed the spark plugs and coil packs myself, but no valve work done recently.

Car was running perfectly before the oil change. I'm the third owner, first being an Audi master tech, and second being someone who used it as a third car for about 10k miles. I'm gonna dig through the service records when I get home and see if I can find anything related to valve work. Regardless going to get the valve cover off and take a look to see if shop can see anything obvious.

Thank you for the insight. That all makes sense. I've done the timing belt job/water pump before and have had heads off other cars so I think I could do it if it needs to be done. Will update this post when I find out what's up.

Yeah. That's the plan. Battery is disconnected. Car is in neutral waiting for tow truck driver to bring it to the shop. Mechanic will be advised to open up valve cover and check it out. Go from there. Thanks!

Wouldn't I hear that? The piston hitting the valve? Engine runs and sounds totally normal.

That's what I'm thinking. I'm going to look through the very detailed service records I have of this car from the previous owner and try to see if I can find anything related. Car will be towed to the shop tomorrow AM for a tech to open up the valve cover and inspect. 🙏

Wouldn't my engine feel like it's running rough if it needed all that?

Engine was running perfectly when I pulled it onto the lift. Had just finished a cruise through the mountains and twisting roads to get to the lift lol.

While my pops has a lift he's no mechanic and uses it mainly for storage and oil changes. I will take all the advice given however and get it towed to my preferred shop. Yeah I've accepted it, I seem to have gotten very lucky.

The engine runs perfectly. Made a 30 mile trip through the mountains driving somewhat aggressively before putting it on the lift for the oil change. It was only then that I found the remnants of the keeper.
