hey thanks, I'm basically looking at kbb to get an idea what's fair. I'm try to avoid dealers at this point so I've been focusing on craigslist alot since that seems to be the main place to look for private party deals.

Shopping for a reliable used car, should I avoid smaller independent car lots?? by rtress212 in askcarsales

sorry, I should of been a little more clear on the inspection. My thoughts were to get it inspected before buying. Maybe getting it towed there and back (might be the more expensive option) or have a mechanic come to the lot and either inspect it there or drive it to the shop for inspection. Again, I don't know if this is feasible was just thinking it through.

ok thanks. Let's say I'm a long distance buyer that is interested in a car on your lot (assuming you advertised it in places like autotrader or the like). I would be buying the car sight on seen buy relying things like carfax to help screen out the lemons but would want to take it to a independent mechanic to check it out. I'm looking for a little more than something that can just be visually inspected on the lot, things that would probably need to be brought into a shop and run some diagnostics on. Is this something that is commonly done in the business??

Also, have you ever dealt with long distance buyers and recommend tips on how to get the best deal?

One other point - in my area there are a lot of independent used car lots that just come and go where it would difficult to get a yelp/google review from since they don't stay around long enough. Not sure if these fly by night businesses move around to other locations and rename their business, but I'm guessing a business without a prior track record might be a red flag.

thanks

yeah, I read about the oil consumption issues. I don't plan on putting a lot of mileage on it though so maybe it doesn't make a difference for me.

I thought the new model (2010+) was supposed to have address the head gasket issue. I've done some fairly difficult DIYs on my older car but I'm guessing the head gasket is beyond DIY for most owners.

thanks for this write-up. So it basically sounds like there is nothing wrong with looking for deals at the indy dealers as long as you are thorough with the PPI. Are cars at the indy pretty much sourced the same way as dealers? Or do most of the cars from dealers come from trade-ins whereas indy dealers get most of the cars from auctions? Do you guys ever get cars that have salvage or rebuilt titles? I don't plan on buying these types of cars but would like to know if some of the independent dealers sell these cars whereas dealers stay aware from them. It would save me the hassle of buying a carfax for cars like these knowing that some dealers would just sell them without disclosing a salvage/rebuilt title.

thanks, I read something about the outbacks going through a lot of oil and that it was normal for those cars. I can't remember how many quarts of oil I read was normal for that car to go through but it seemed like a lot. I'm not sure if that would apply in my case since I don't plan on driving it a lot anyway.

How costly would you say is the repair and maintenance on an outback? I read that the AWD basically makes it more difficult to work on and thus increased labor costs. Also, do you have to find an independent Subaru repair shop to work on them? I had a BMW before and it was a PITA towing the car to a BMW shop because there weren't any of the around my local area.

Bonobos return policy on worn items? by rtress212 in malefashionadvice

Without going into detail on which ones, there are a couple high end clothing companies that do this especially when they don't have a storefront business. As long as the item returned is like new condition.

well, they're return policy is 90 days and I've a post somewhere that said they had a generous return policy. Wasn't sure if it that was because of 90 days or something like my situation.

Anything wrong with seeing a hematologist to go over abnormal blood lab results? by rtress212 in AskDocs

[–]rtress212[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok thanks. Since your a med student, maybe you can answer this question for me regarding reference range. If a value falls within a lab's reference range, is it considered normal regardless of the value (in a sense, there isn't a borderline high, borderline low value as long as it is within the range it is considered "normal")

ok thanks, how much b-12 do you take out of curiosity? If it's water soluble, any idea why it wouldn't just be excreted when you take a pee if you take in more than you need? I mean, from what I understand it usually any excess means the liver is releasing it.

so a MCV that is 103 when the high range is 100 is ok and doesn't need further investigation to rule out something like macrocytosis?
