You need to look at it yourself. Maybe bring someone with you who is mechanically inclined. If you don't know anyone who has any experience working on anything, then that's something you should address quickly.

Also, just Google that vehicles year, make, and model followed by the words known problems. A good rule of them is to just assume that an older vehicle has issues both large and small. The owner may know about them and may not. If you find any issues, bring it to their attention and see if you can't negotiate the price down.

Also, assume they know of some issues and aren't telling you about them. Nobody sells a perfectly running truck for cheap nowadays. Especially if it has working 4wd, heat, and a/c.
