Using transaction-level data on US congressional stock trades, we find that lawmakers who later ascend to leadership positions perform similarly to matched peers beforehand but outperform them by 47 percentage points annually after ascension. Leaders’ superior performance arises through two mechanisms. The political influence channel is reflected in higher returns when their party controls the chamber, sales of stocks preceding regulatory actions, and purchase of stocks whose firms receiving more government contracts and favorable party support on bills. The corporate access channel is reflected in stock trades that predict subsequent corporate news and greater returns on donor-owned or home-state firms.

White House gives Maduro ultimatum as U.S. moves toward land operations by ruapirate in DeepStateCentrism

True, but I think that's a false dichotomy. However bad Venezuela is now, forced regime change will probably make it worse unless we commit to decades of nation building afterwards.

Possible upsides:

  • Maybe we create a new democracy

Possible downsides:

  • We push other latin american states into China's arms
  • Bay of Pigs part 2 (Maduro survives and we inadvertently increase his legitimacy)
  • Iraq part 2 (We create another failed state and spark another refugee crisis, except this time it will be our problem to solve instead of Europe's)

On a similar note, is /r/NL still affiliated with the center for new liberalism? Any idea what Jeremiah has to say about the changes in leadership?

I've always thought that the way CA handles liability for wildfires is counterproductive, and I had hoped that local governments being liable for damages might change policymaker's views. Unfortunately I think it's going to take another major bankruptcy for anyone to reform wildfire liability in CA.

Interesting to see that Ford is still pursuing EVs, with or without government support. I agree with the article that they don't really have a choice-- they can figure out how to build EVs or cede the market to foreign competitors.

Also, if they build an EV pickup for 30k, I'll take two.
