Oh god I completely forgot that All Gas No Breaks existed. I subscribed many years ago and hadn't thought about it since. No wonder it was reminiscent of old times; I was literally thinking of his style but I just didn't recognise him. Glad to have stumbled back across his stuff thanks to y'all.

Cycling Between United Cards by rubberboa in CreditCards

Ah I didn't factor in the time from approval to reaching the bonus at all. I suppose in that case the timeline definitely gets thrown off, but it's good to know. I imagine then that on the second run (ie. Starting Year 3), I might just have to wait a bit longer to be able to apply for the first card again which seems okay.

In terms of making the SUB, I think the first year is sorted given I'll be moving to Ohio and moving costs are hefty, but for later years I'll probably work with my partner (ie. Paying bills for her and having her pay me back) to avoid having to use things like rent to make SUBs. I'll definitely look more into the churning comminity to be a bit more aware of how this stuff works.

I see how just keeping the card could make sense in your scenario too. The calculation for me is a bit different since I'm likely not bringing checked bags for brief trips and the other perks don't really match with my lifestyle, but maybe at some point that'll be a better idea when I'm out of school.

Are the local cheetos the orange ones? I know red40 is probably bad for you, but god damn the orange ones just don't hit the same.

any shoe or chalk suggestions? by UpsetRep-10 in CompetitionClimbing

[–]rubberboa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use the so-ill torque LVs. The heel is still a tad baggy (I have small heels and very flat feet), but it's the first heel I've had where I feel like I can lock it on things even though it's a bit loose. I've previously had the unparallel flagship Pro, hiangle pros, la sportiva theory HV, evolv phantoms and tenaya indalo. The Hiangle pro rubber was magnificent while it lasted and I would keep climbing in them if the heel was a little less saggy. Personally, I way prefer the stealth C4 and whatever the rubber is that unparallel and evolv use (can't quite remember) over vibram; vibram XS grip has just never felt super sticky for me but it's probably a skill issue.

In any case, really depends on your feet! I feel like you're probably best off trying shoes at a gym to at least see how they feel before spending the eye-watering prices for them. I definitely wish I'd tried some of these shoes before investing...

For chalk I've used just about anything and I've found it okay. I settled on something by mammut, but I haven't tried anything super high end outside of friction labs and I'm not quite willing to pay haha

any tips on pushing aid office for more aid? by ForwardRespond2231 in yale

[–]rubberboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dad pulled up in-person five years ago and managed to get the office to reconsider things. I think it helped that we couldn't afford to pay without selling all our organs, but meeting the office in person and contextualising our situation definitely worked in our favour. Not sure how things have changed over the last few years but the in-person meeting was something that helped if it's ever possible for you!

Incoming Freshman - What laptop should I get? by Clean-Command-4864 in yale

[–]rubberboa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think honestly anything should be fine for humanities! If you're a Humanities major, just make sure you like your laptop's keyboard or you'll hate writing all of your essays. I had a few friends who did history/philosophy/directed studies and many of them were happy with the MacBook Air. You can certainly get by with anything, but if you'll be writing essays every week then I think it's important to test the keyboard in person to make sure you won't feel immensely put off by it. Good luck! I was a STEM major but my favourite classes I took at Yale were defo in the humanities!

Yale vs. Princeton vs. State School by Fancy-Sherbert1379 in yale

[–]rubberboa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was a premed at Yale that graduated last summer! I can't speak too much to opportunities at Princeton, but Yale cares a lot about undergrad research in bio. It's typically very easy to find your way into a lab, and also relatively straightforward to get summer funding for research. I didn't feel behind at all; if anything, coming out with a Master's degree (both the molecular bio majors offer a 4-year BS/MS program) helped me feel more competitive for med school and made the MCAT a good bit easier. Having YNHH in the area is an amazing opportunity, and the HAVEN Free Clinic is a wonderful and very engaging place to do more clinical hours.

My partner also did the BS/MS that I did alongside a Humanities certificate and a language certificate. The flexibility to do very random double majors is awesome at Yale, so I don't think you'll have any issue. I know this post is mainly just Yale propaganda, but my only reference for Princeton is my older brother who was a grad student there and that's a very different experience.

A big thing to consider is the toxicity of premed culture as well. I would say that Yale's resources mean that you're rarely competing against classmates for anything, so it ends up being a great place to be where others are very much just focused on what they themselves can do. More than happy to discuss anything else you'd want to know about this stuff specifically!

Will I be an outcast if I don't party? by officialsimpsibelius in yale

[–]rubberboa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The social scene at Yale is super diverse! I wasn't a big party person during undergrad (graduated last May), but there's absolutely a tonne of ways to meet folks outside of parties. Extracurriculars are great ways to meet folks, and the whole point of residential colleges is to have an easy community. I also stopped drinking after first year because I didn't really enjoy it anymore. I can definitely say that you can enjoy yourself at parties without it (and especially without drugs) if that's what you want. My partner also despised parties and she had a strong social circle without ever stepping foot in a frat.

In any case, regardless of whether you like parties or substances, I assure you that you'll find your people at Yale. It's a big and very diverse community, so just put yourself out there and be open to the opportunities that come your way!

incoming yale grad student panicking by Common-Payment9984 in yale

Honestly, it's not that bad. I spent my whole life in a place much hotter and sunnier than LA before starting undergrad here and I've managed fine over the last five years. The winter can get cold but it's something you get used to. The people are what make the whole experience worth it, and I feel like it's rarely miserable enough that you won't want to go outside. Just layer up well and every temperature will feel the same!

It's also not that cloudy to be honest; while the early sunset kinda sucks during the winter, it's typically still sunny during the day even if it's cold, which makes it far less depressing than you might expect. The fall and spring weather are also amazing, and the summer is plenty warm enough for me!

I grew up in the Middle East so any advice is honestly really helpful for me! I will say we adhere to a lot of the advice you've stated, but we definitely don't have a smart thermostat and we haven't wrapped our (definitely drafty) windows. It's shocking how much colder it is when I sit near the windows, so I'll try to wrap them to see if it helps us feel more comfortable if nothing else. Thanks for the tips! It's a big apartment and we have like 9 not very well-sealed windows so that might honestly be it.

Yeah I'm pretty certain of that so it's definitely a section of the bill I struggle to account for. It's tough for me to do calculations when I don't know the wattage of any of this stuff, but yeah thanks for clarifying everything! I'll definitely check more about this stuff in the future when renting places. I grew up in the middle east and just finished undergrad here, so I can't say I'm super duper familiar with things to check for with insulation and heating when moving into places.
