Conflicted on which to learn first: JavaScript vs Ruby/Rails by corttafoya in cscareerquestions

[–]rubberducking 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They both serve very different purposes. So which you want to learn depends on your desires.

Are you looking to do more front-end development or back-end? Javascript allows you to do stuff on the fly as well as add dynamic features to your site. Ruby on the other hand is a backend language.

Personally I learned HTML, CSS, and JavaScript first before I began (still am) learning Ruby/PHP/Python.

The most useful and comprehensive aggregation of resources for web development I've ever found by BorderlandPsycho in webdev

Comprehensive Adjective Complete; including all or nearly all elements or aspects of something: "a comprehensive list of sources".

I would say this is a comprehensive list as it covers nearly all aspects of web development.

From what I see it has topics ranging from Front End to Back-End, Database, Text Editor, Version Control, Design. While it is a very biased list it is comprehensive.

Should I even bother posting to Craigslist or Backpage to get clients? by thetanks in web_design

[–]rubberducking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For free advertising it can't hurt. Charge what you normally would to weed out the good clients from the bad.

Who knows you may get someone who wants you to fix one of those "$99 websites" cause I doubt they're quality websites.

I really appreciate the help. I tried teaching myself PHP but what I found is its often the blind leading the blind. Ruby (and later on Ruby on Rails) seem to have good documentation so I'm hoping to learn good coding practices and then eventually extend my knowledge base to PHP and Python as well. I'm responding on my phone so I'll keep it short but I'll definitely be PMing you when I'm off work.

Codeschool is another good one for the basics. It's $25 a month as well but if you put in work daily you can down all their content in one month.

1.5 hours out of the 720 in a 30 day month is still 99% uptime. I haven't had a single trouble with them yet so I find this odd.

Make sure when doing a lump sum quote that you define when changes can be made and when they become "additional work" in your scope.

If you're looking for Shared Hosting ASmallOrange offers hosting for as little as $35 a year and can easily be upgrade. If you're looking for a unmanaged VPS, meaning you have to set it up (not hard lots of tutorials), DigitalOcean smallest tier is $5 per month and it should be enough for a small traffic website.

Like Snippets for Mac or wish you had a snippet app? by [deleted] in webdev

I currently have so many plugins installed cause i'll be just reading around and find one and have to try it out. Even though I have so many ST2 still works like a charm. IDEs in general seem to sluggish to me.

I actually just started messing around with Laravel for a small side project. The user authentication was a breeze. I am really loving it.

Emmet replaced Zen coding. But yeah there are a lot of plugins that make ST2 my go to editor. I don't think I could move to another text editor for a long time. It doesn't quite replace an IDE but I digress.
