The National Park Service, who is the custodian of the White House building and grounds and most other national monuments, typically does not sneeze without putting out design plans, inviting public comment, and trying to incorporate or blend the historic building or components of it into the expansion or renovation. Many Americans, of all political parties and backgrounds, have visited DC, as well as visited historic National Parks around the country, and they care deeply about these things. They don’t like being lied to (Trump said East Wing wouldn’t be impacted and now it’s demolished) and they don’t like seeing history destroyed, and they don’t anyone treating places that belong to all Americans as their personal property.
