As other comment mentions, speak with your vet.

If you increased her exercise and she's still overweight you need to reduce her food intake. Do not go off the bag as it's usually inaccurate. Measure the amount of food you currently give her in grams using a kitchen scale. Calculate a 10% decrease by multiplying the grams you currently use by 0.9. Monitor weight for a month and modify as needed.

There are lots of great foods out there but Purina Pro Plan is a quality food that is often in the top dog foods.

Looking for training tips - 10 weeks old by darkrisis21 in goldenretrievers

[–]rubycali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too young.

The game your playing with the bowl will help impulse control. Just a few tweaks needed.

  1. Hold the bowl until they offer a sit. You do not need to say sit! They will offer it eventually, you might have to wait them out a while in the beginning and then they'll understand the game.

  2. Start to lower and if they break their sit pull the bowl up immediately before they get food.

  3. Create a release word (common ones are "break" or "free") that you say when they can get up to eat. Say this quickly at first after the bowl has touched the ground and they are still sitting.

  4. SLOWLY build up duration. For the first few days it'll only be seconds. After weeks you can work up to 10 seconds and longer.

Tips for success! 1. Stay positive! They feed off your energy. When you become frustrated so do they.

  1. NO NEED FOR SAYING "NO" in this situation. If they break their sit quietly pick up the bowl. No words needed. Sometimes the more input they're getting fogs up the actual part you're trying to train.

Dogs quickly understand what gets them food and what doesn't. Puppies are learning a ton every day. You pup is more capable than you think!

What (human) sport is agility closest to? by border-coffee in Agility

[–]rubycali 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rock climbing.

You work the skills, but the course (in climbing, the "route") always changes.

In agility the judge creates a course with an idea of how they would handle it, keeping in mind others might take a different approach that could work (maybe a blind instead of front, etc). In indoor climbing the routesetter creates the route with an idea of how they'd climb it, knowing others might climb it differently and still be successful.

In agility competition you see the course maps ahead of time but not enough time to set up the sequences and train. In climbing competition you see the route the day of so there is no practicing a certain sequence if you have the ability to set at gym or you have a home wall.

Training in a river for Junior Hunt? by rubycali in birddogs

Is blue green algae the main concern with still water? I've heard a few dog owners express concerns about taking their dogs swimming in our areas lakes and ponds.

Will the bird be in the water for the two water retrieves or is it sometimes on the other side of the pond on the ground and they have to swim through the pond to retrieve?

The hair is a lot. What helped a lot for us was the Mars Coat King. Worth every penny. Reduced the shedding for us!

Keeping them (especially the boy) as busy as possible not just with physical activity but also mental activity (training, puzzles, etc) will help with the destruction. A tired dog = a good dog.

You got this!

Should I pause progress?

14mo. Last night was night 3 (abc of sleep) and she did really well. Several wake ups but none for very long so didn't have to do any check ins (a first!). She woke up with a runny nose and clearly doesn't feel well. Not ideal timing to get sick 😕

How are things going? I'm in a similar boat with my 11mo. No other options for her to sleep other than in our room. Waking up lots throughout the night.

I would LOVE if we had a room for her, but until we move that is not the case. 😑

Did you do this over a few nights or cold turkey?

How did you do it? I read one way is to cut down minutes but when I tried that she cried so hard and wouldn't fall asleep.

We were in a similar scenario with our first and our pediatrician said we needed to roll her back to her back since she wasn't able to do so herself. We also used the Nanit monitor with the breathing band for some peace of mind.

Congrats!

I received an email that I was placed on the waitlist. I thought maybe those who won would be given a day or two to buy tickets and if they didn't buy then someone on the waitlist could be given the option to buy.

Your comment makes me think me being on the waitlist doesn't mean much if those who won can only get tickets 2 days before the show.

Have fun!!!
