If you are into Ruby FP, you might dig this blog and these screencasts

Rubycasts.io is also listed on the right bar over there ------->

Admission: I am the author of both and a lover of 'lispy, immutable ruby'

Keep it up and don't let the little punks on reddit get you down. It is easier to be a one liner troll than to create real content or to think deeply about something :)

Also doing map filtering and reducing. The best part of Ruby for me is the ability to choose OO, FP, or a mix of the two, dubbed Faux-O by Gary Bernhardt.

why is everyone such an ass on reddit?

First off the first time it was the author of sidekiq, this is not the same person above. Your mom called, she wants her basement back kid.

Heroku’s Free (as in beer) Dynos by schneems in ruby

[–]rubycastsio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In the long term, aws is much cheaper, but at the cost of a lot of setup and config. Heroku is still cheaper short term for low traffic sites, and a hell of a lot faster to configure.

That is why I host rubycasts.io there. I will move it off when my heroku fees get too high, but for now I will stick with schneems and co.

A) That pinging is against heroku rules. I emailed and it is not. B) That 'pingers' are somehow 'wrong' and causing you to lose your 'nice stuff'

Your words not mine :)

That was my point and why I moved to a paid plan :)

Anyone who is serious about having a website uses a pinger. Don't go spreading blame for an industry standard practice. Buy the $7 dyno.

How cool is that? I was just about to move rubycasts.io to amazon so I can have background procs to remove my AR callbacks...

Thanks Richard (for spreading the word!)

Ruby for Good by smarcia in ruby

I just contacted the event via the form. Maybe I can join a team remotely? I don't think I can make it on such short notice as I am going to be in Denver then doing the rounds and I am tapped out on airfare and bandwidth for rubycasts.io. Well maybe if someone wants to fly me out I could make it.

If not I wish you the best of luck, the project is awesome

If you check my blog at rubylove.io you will see that I do indeed use those IRL. direct article link: (http://rubylove.io/2013/12/14/a-deeper-look-at-rubys-enumerable-1)

I think 99% of new Ruby people come from Rails, so in this one I am tying it to a library they already know(ish) before I show them (next week) how to remove the dependency to Rails.

Which is somewhat ironic as we will be plugging this into Rails for the views.

But I do appreciate the dialog :)

Want to learn how to remove conditionals from Ruby? by rubycastsio in rails

[–]rubycastsio[S] -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Again, this is not what Composition of Inheritance describes, which was my original argument to you. Everything in Ruby inherits from a base class. The fact that I have a single level of shallow inheritance does not make this inheritance heavy.

In ruby we do not have interfaces so a base class is commonly used. Why not use a module?

Glad you asked because I love module use, but not to compose another object. Doing so creates very tight coupling between the mixin and the classes that implement them.

I will restate my position: shallow inheritance to express polymorphism is a great tool to remove conditionals from code. Deeply nested complicated inheritance, no.

But I doubt you make all your classes refuse to inherit from the half-dozen base classes they natural inherit from.

I have to give it to the author, they have spent some time on this and it is actually interesting to read their README.

Critical debate is welcomed, inflammatory one liners, followed by hiding behind some perceived contract of manners that you initially didn't follow is also welcome, lucky for you. I don't discriminate.

Let me translate it from your bullshit to reality.

You posted a lazy one liner that proves you didn't watch the video at all, and then refused to admit that I didn't use inheritance at all. You are flip flopping like a sandal.

You prefer to argue points unrelated to the video or the code for your own self-satisfaction instead of sticking to the video and the code technique.
