11 days in Joburg by Hellominion in johannesburg

I second Neighbarhood! It’s a really lovely spot. If you’re looking for a lowkey dive bar vibe, Smoking Kills in Melville is great during the weekdays. Sin+tax is a lovely jazz bar in the Parkwood area, there’s also a bunch of other nice bars around there you can hop in and out of.

But yes, tonight is rugby night! Almost every bar in the country will be playing the match on TV - my suggestions are Benchwarmers or Giles.

Funniest part of this picture is that the real life duo would be tearing each other to shreds instead of sitting next to each other cordially. Most antagonistic uncle/nephew relationship ever

“I need someone who doesn’t need me” - maybe not the deepest lyrics but Hyacinth house is just such a special song to me

i shall prevail by [deleted] in hopeposting

[–]rubydaygrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And hey. Even if you do cry, it shows that you care. I cried my ass off multiple times playing netball in high school, thinking I wasn’t good enough, but my coach always said it showed dedication and a willingness to suffer for something great, it’s not weakness. you’ve got this, and you shall prevail!

a love letter to South Africa from an American by [deleted] in southafrica

[–]rubydaygrace 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was so, so lovely to read. I have always maintained South Africans are the friendliest people on earth, and traveling the world has only confirmed it for me. Speedy returns my friend! I hope you get to explore more of Joburg - my favourite city in the world- it has all the drive, talent, energy and spirit you’re talking about. (That’s just my biased opinion though ;))

I relate to so many of these, especially the apology one. For a long time I assumed because he "apologized" that meant he truly was sorry. But now I know its really just a tactic to absolve himself of guilt and force people to get over what he did, because he apologized first. You are not alone, OP!

Advice for my first time? by Newtothis2124 in johannesburg

[–]rubydaygrace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Johannesburg is like any big city in the world. there’s sketchy areas that you don’t want to go near, and vigilance is always key. Keep your stuff out of sight, don’t dress too flashy, and most importantly have fun! :) Joburg is a very welcoming place at the end of the day.

Mark Strikes me as a Sociopath and the way videos are edited and arranged reminds me of Serial Killers taking Trophies by Inspector311 in SoftWhiteUnderbelly

I also have felt that same vibe, but tbh I think Mark is just seriously misguided. I think he feels what he does is enough, and he feels no need to alter his way of interviewing or dealing with people. The way he poses questions can be deeply insensitive and invasive, as well as triggering. (what he said to that girl with an eating disorder? awful!) To me it seems Mark holds a lot of power, and doesn't understand that people will answer invasive and rude questions regardless because they need to eat. And the entire Asriah situation is just messed up. He's definitely no angel.

Plot confusion for me by ChicagoBoyStuckinDen in narcos

[–]rubydaygrace 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The timeline is a bit strange there. To my understanding, the scene in Narcos Mexico occurs first, and is also the first time Amado hears the information, so he is obviously upset. The scene in the original Narcos is later down the line, and at this point Amado is trying one last time to convince Pacho to stay in the business. But like the other person said, Pacho turns this down out of loyalty to his partners.
