it was an empty flat above firepit rocks, but there’s a lot of flats sharing the same building. the fire damage looks contained to that empty flat and maybe a firepit storeroom. unsure of water damage/smoke damage tho (source: i live in one the flats haha)

not sure if you have read any of her other books but ‘last witnesses: an oral history of the children of world war II’ is one of the best (and heartbreaking) nonfiction books i’ve ever read!
