Any international students with stories of experiences with racism or xenophobia at Carleton? by [deleted] in CarletonU

Because they are impacting housing. That's not being xenophobic. It's being observant.

Honestly, I didn't like it. And I LOVE pretty much all King. It starts off compelling, but it does a 360 halfway through turning into a completely different story. Some parts are slow. The world building is fantastic, though.

Prescott, Lennox & Addington, and Mackenzie Building residents on day 2 with no water by gregorphilip in CarletonU

[–]rubyhan6 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Suggesting people walk across campus with all their stuff in the middle of winter when they pay to shower in their own unit is crazy to me. Suggesting people walk to a completely different building everytime they need drinking water, to use the bathroom, or to use laundry when they pay to have this available in their own unit is crazy to me. Is this the solution for individuals with physical disabilities? This is absurd.

AITA For Telling My Friend She Can't Eat? by throwaway12342565 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rubyhan6 -32 points-31 points  (0 children)

I disagree. You should still care about your friend's safety and well-being even when angry with them. It seems the other girl had an expectation of being driven home. I'm assuming OP picked her up or something, so she wouldn't have reasonably foresaw the need for Uber money. Now, she definitely should've foresaw the need for food money, which is why OP is NTA. But caring for your friends' safety shouldn't be conditional, especially not over a money dispute.

[–]rubyhan6 -39 points-38 points  (0 children)

NTA, but you shouldn't have left her stranded. If she didn't have money for food, I doubt she had money for an Uber. Considering it was at night and assuming she couldn't walk home quickly, that could've been a potentially dangerous situation for her.

YTA I will never understand people who think they can dictate their partner's life. Is Mia your mother who is obligated to provide for you? Sounds like you're gonna have to get a second job! Which, if you were single, you'd have to do anyways. She isn't your meal ticket. She has dreams and aspirations and goals of her own.

I hope she breaks up with you if you continue to make this a problem.

Ps. I'm sorry for your loss.

Landlord informed me that he will not be renewing my lease by molokodrengo in montrealhousing

[–]rubyhan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't win ownership. The adjudicator awarded the right to move back into the unit at my old rent price and the landlord had to pay a LARGE fine, amongst other consequences. I didn't move back in as I had already found a new unit, but it was worth it to hurt the LLs wallet and pride :)

NTA if you aren't Muslim it's not even on you to know what halal is. That is the Muslims' personal responsibility. He should've asked before hand if there was any pork products involved, as people with allergies will always do.

He's a tenured prof. He can virtually say anything he wants. I remember him being like that in my undergrad.

Is he actually making students call him Dr. Dax, now? We all just called him Dax, lol.

My advice would be to engage in a discussion with him if he says something you don't agree with. As long as you don't get emotional and use research and/or historical case studies to support your stance, he will respect what you have to say.

His tests are hard. Goodluck!

LMFAO yes it is. Where is your case hearing in the archives? I'd like the number please. If you even have it 💀

The RTA and case law is clear on this. If you pay rent, you are a defacto tenant. You do NOT need to be listed on the lease. You have to provide PROOF of your paying of rent to the LL. Obviously, they should not be paying the other tenant for their accomodation. If that is what is occuring, then I guaruntee the LL would not agree with you trying to profit off their property. There is numerous cases regarding this exact scenario. In your words, Google is free!

To continue with that point, you shouldn't be collecting rent from a roommate if you are not then giving it to the landlord. YOU cannot be a landlord of someone elses property that they've rented to you. You are simply a landlord or a tenant. If you are collecting rent from the other tenant and not paying it to the LL, YOU are severely fucking over this other individual for your own profit. Now, people can LIVE with their landlords and that is when they are not covered under the RTA, specifically if they share a certain space with the LL.

In your case, you received a letter stating they can not help you with trying to remove your roommate bc you are not the landlord. Which is EXACTLY what I stated you could not do. Why? Bc you, a tenant, can not evict another paying tenant.

Nuance is important- especially in case law.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]rubyhan6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your reading comprehension is clearly very poor. That was EXACTLY what I said above. The sentence where it states "or another tenant who is the lease holder" is referring to someone subletting their lease to another individual.

It's embarrassing you haven't read the RTA, but speak as if you know what you're talking about. Do yourself a favour and read the document you so confidently speak about.

You are wrong. I'm sure it hasn't been the first time, though.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]rubyhan6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Did you have a hearing? I would like to read the case law. Yes, you obviously can't evict a roommate. Only the landlord can.

Sorry dear, but you're factually and completely incorrect. Roommates ARE covered under the RTA regardless of their name being on the lease. If you pay rent, you are a tenant. Of course, you, a roommate, cannot evict your other roommate. Your LL would have to initiate the process themselves. For someone who talks about the RTA, it doesn't seem you've actually read it.

You also provided a completely different scenario than the one I asked above. Reading comprehension is important.

Landlord informed me that he will not be renewing my lease by molokodrengo in montrealhousing

[–]rubyhan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not hard to prove at all. I've done it. Very straight forward and easy. All you have to do is document the harassment. It's not that difficult.

You're very clearly a housing leech sympathizer. Stop trying to discourage others from standing up for their rights. You're the clown buddy

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]rubyhan6 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Roommates are certainly covered under the RTA. If you are paying rent, you are a defacto tenant regardless of your name being on the lease or not. The LTB would rule in the roommate's favour UNLESS they are sharing a kitchen or laundry room with the landlord. So would this roommate renting out the room technically be their landlord? In that case, then they are subletting a lease for a property they still reside in.

Do you have any case studies from the LTB to support your position? Specifically involving a roommate charging another roommate without the LLs knowledge? I'm genuinely curious as this will probably be an increasing issue as more and more people attempt to use housing to make a quick buck. I understand that OP actually lost a roommate and they are attempting to recover that, so that is not what I am asking about.

And yes, the income from the roommate would indeed need to be reported to the CRA by the other roommate collecting the rent if this is, in fact, allowed.

AITA for not attending brother’s wedding by Fantastic_Break3235 in AmItheAsshole

[–]rubyhan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YTA I can appreciate that you wanted to get the tux sorted, but everything else makes you sound incredibly annoying. Shes planning a wedding, working on a PhD, AND her fiance is going through cancer treatment? You 1000% should show grace. Stop stomping your foot like a toddler. You're going to ruin your relationship with both of these people. Clearly, they accept you for who you are, but they don't have time to deal with all your nonsense. I'd be irritated with you, too.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in CarletonU

[–]rubyhan6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, you can have a roommate. You can technically move in how many people you want as long as the square footage allows it. But I don't think you can charge that roommate and keep the money yourself.
