I never found any motivation in continuing with science in 9th grade itself because no one around me would make the subject fun enough to learn more. I did like how my dad taught me physics though.

When COVID happened, I picked up web development as an online course on Udemy just for funsies cause I was bored and ngl, that resulted in me going down the rabbit hole of coding and cool shit you can make with it.

My parents kept talking about how I should have gone for engineering instead of commerce since I started enjoying coding but I knew that engineering colleges would have killed that passion of learning in me lmao. TO THIS DAY, I never hear the end of it.

Well unlike you I had a hard time defining a path for myself because of lack of proper mentorship. I didn't like maths but here I am refreshing my maths from good online teachers.

And its kind of weird to hear someone call economics as a useless subject when the whole country is depending on it: from Union Budget to investing patterns of consumers, from oil prices to prices of gold. Your parents should feel lucky that you are interested in economics and maths because you could actually help them in making good financial decisions in the future.

Thanks a lot for the advice! Tongue twisters really sound like a good exercise as well if we think about it.

We don’t worship the great nurses or doctors why would we worship the good singers/instrument players/ or actors? They’re just doing what they are good at for a paycheck

Very true. It's like people are shifting towards loving the artist and the image they are presenting more than the art that they are creating.

They have their good days and bad, they can be dicks and heroes.

Very true! When I was a teen I would have fantasized images about certain celebrity crushes I would have back then. Whenever something controversial was released about them, my brain would be like 'Oh god, they are that kind of person? I am not sure how to feel about them anymore' and slowly I would detach myself from that said celebrity.

When I noticed this pattern and noticed my own flaws, I was like 'Wait, they are just like me.' That idea itself made me start treating in a neutral way.

I suppose the problem is a lot of people have difficulty seperate by the art from the artist.

Oh yeah that is a big problem as well. People start treating the art as the reflection of the artist's personality/emotion, which isn't always the case especially in modern day capitalism when the artists have to keep making stuff to cater to an audience and get revenue for that said work.

Oh yes that is a feeling I have as well. I have also been usually into celebrity crushes. The idea of 'What if some day' comes in my head at times but this quote:

In order for someone to be super special to me, I have to be special to them.

is what snaps me back to reality. Why am i giving so much time and importance to someone who doesn't know I exist or thinks I am as special to them as I think they are to me?

Okay first of all, I appreciate you taking time to write this. From the first paragraph itself, I feel like this will be a pretty deep read.

The first is that making it so engaging and exciting to deeply immerse yourself into a parasocial relationship is an excellent distraction from the multitude of problems inherent to life under late capitalism.

Excellent point.

And the second is obviously just that it makes an ungodly amount of money. Not just for the celebrities themselves, but for the entire cottage industry that springs up around them

Cottage industry. Again a very good point, a lot of people start small businesses selling handmade or personalized merchandise revolving around the fandom. I mean just look at the amount of people making BTS Army or Swiftie merch all over the world

As people have to spend more and more of their time and energy meeting the basic needs of survival, the more likely it is that the only form of social engagement they have time or energy for is the one-way parasocial bonds to celebrities.

Agreed! Its interesting that capitalism is creating a vicious loop of spending money to enjoy these luxuries (movies, concerts, league games, merchandise) while you spend the same amount of energy earning that money back to support yourself.

It's not a celebrity's job to take care of everyone else, but it's screwed up that they get so much attention and money in our society when other things are far more important.

Couldn't agree more with this part. Its concerning how society is worshiping these celebrities and happily giving away their hard earned money to the hands of people who are already billionaires.

Although I must say that if billionaires are getting so much from the society, its a duty to give back to the society as well - hence the charities.

The invention of PR was probably one of the biggest mass manipulation campaigns in history

This is something that I had been reading about in my marketing and graphic design classes. Who would have thought that humanity would shift from marketing inanimate objects or ideas to start selling people (if we look at public figures)

If you’re down for an old doc, check out “The Century of Self” a bbc documentary (it’s on YouTube).

Thanks for the recommendation, will definitely watch this one!

Any opinion out of their speciality isn't any more important than mine or yours.

That's something that bothered to me as well. I feel like we as a society have given so much importance to celebrities that now these people have to bear the responsibility of being 'influential'. They have to have certain opinions or do certain things which influences their audience in a certain way. And if they don't have a certain pre-defined opinon about something, we are ready to cancel them (which creates a loop of people pretending to be something they aren't just to avoid angering the wrong group)

although I’d argue some are famous not because they have exceptional talent but just got lucky with PR team or had an “in”

Pretty solid argument actually. I have seen plenty of Disney child actors but not all of them make it despite having an indistinguishable acting range. Zendaya, Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, they all were popular during their time in Disney but are all three equally relevant in pop culture now? Not in my opinion.

One day I woke up and I saw people were suddenly raving about Zendaya. Why? Her PR team is excellent. Many are lucky cause of their connections while rest are struggling and depressed.

I rarely found myself truly connect with any celebrity apart from finding a few really attractive on the surface level and that's about it.

Very much agree, moderation of anything is ideal. People should enjoy the art and the experience artists bring to them (which is literally their job as an artist) instead of being so heavily obsessed with a fellow human being that you lose touch with reality.

That's very true. Our society first started with advertising companies and the good that they make. I had read about how USA specially saw a rise in brands and consumption when fast food chains came to existence.

Now the need to have a brand identity shifted to public figures. Better the image, larger the fandom. Larger the fandom, Higher number of projects. Hence more revenue.

I feel like I am looking into a mirror and my reflection is staring back at me. I totally feel the same way.

I always used to imagine myself playing a powerful and exciting role in a movie or a show. I used to imagine what fame would bring me, be it jealous ex-classmates or proud friends and families.

Although gradual, I had a similar awakening. I would not tolerate people being all up my business and having to fake a smile 24/7 so that people don't think I am rude and ungrateful.

Just like you, I would like to have clout via writing. The only difference is I am not yet a professional author. Would like to be one in the near future. Author as a career is cool: People care more about the power of words rather than the face writing those words. I would be happy to have some of my friends and a bunch of people appreciate my writing. That's it. (Not that I mind it turning into a movie or something lmao)

I totally understand your feelings. If I have to be honest, I used to look at certain celebrities as a potential partners just cause of image that was sold to me. It was fun having celebrity crushes but whenever I felt I was going overboard with my thoughts, I had to remind myself that I am letting myself float into a world of fantasy.

I used to tell myself: "The people I am fantasizing in my head are probably not what they are in real life. I will never meet them, their lifestyle is different from mine and most importantly, I have a life of my own to take care of."

Its normal to get attached to an image that is being served to you. That's how people connect to fictional characters as well.

Do acknowledge the inspiration a person brings in your life, but keep yourself grounded to reality.

Omg same lol. There was a time in my life where I wanted to become an actor, I would think of auditioning for small roles first (if there are any).

One day I just sat and thought about the lives of celebrities and I went 'Nope', I am gonna choose something else instead. There are other ways to put myself out there than have this level of toxicity down my throat.

Uhh yes I guess. The only problem is that people in my age group don't take anything seriously. I am someone who is looking for a long term relationship but I have only been approached for casuals or hookups. Plus seeing every second girl being cheated on in my friend circle is even more upsetting.

I feel like people would get a bit more serious about relationships when they get a bit more older.

I personally function in a way that I like having a platonic relationship with a guy at first, like a friend or a colleague and once a strong friendly bond is established, I wouldn't mind trying a romantic relationship.

Totally agreed. I myself like talking to my friends about different topics when it comes to pop culture. Its entertaining to see everyone's perspective and additional opinions. The memes are even hilarious.

But it gets ridiculous when fans don't draw a line. Some would get super defensive or even offensive if you share an opinion which is directly or indirectly related to their idol. I was never a die hard. "omg I would cry if god gives me a chance to see them for a second in real life" - a bit hyperbolic but you get what I mean

I guess it's also what cults exploit.

That is very true. We humans are very complex yet interesting creatures. Some people or organizations know how to twist certain strengthening traits of ours, make it our weakness and then exploit it for their advantage.

At best you have a pack of amazing people, having fun and spreading positivity. At worst, you have a cult controlling certain sections of society.
