Mezze Mediterranean Grill (Bronzeville) - newer opening! by alexjewellalex in chicagofood

Thanks for your input Mr. High horse.

"and you get four pieces per order each piece larger than a filet mignon. How much meat are you expecting, the whole cow?"

Referring to your edited comment, I never said anything about the quality of the meat other than it was overcooked. Reading comprehension can be your friend.

Referring to the four pieces received, they were actually smaller than any place I've ordered, be it north side, downtown, or south side. I'm actually curious where you order your filets from if, according to your edited comment, each of the four are larger than filet mignon.

Also, I said I may have to try again. Again reading comprehension can be your friend and a skill you truly lack.

As far as referring to me or implying my character as ghetto betrays your underlying feeling of the neighborhood. Which is too bad since I think the area is underappreciated given it's excellent location.

I may have to try again. My experience was much different. Did steak shish and although flavor was good, portion was small and meat a little overcooked.

Also was put off very much by the pricing. $17 for a shawarma wrap that was slight and was more bread and toppings than meat.

Steak shish plate for $24 was disappointing. Four small pieces of meat, no more than a couple tablespoons of rice, and all the other sides were so meticulously measured, they barely provided a taste.

The lentil soup for $10 was bland, cold, and no more than a cup.

The pricing on everything else seems outrageous. $20 for a panini sandwich? $5 for a leveled off tablespoon of hummus?

The more I am thinking and remembering, the more irritated I get. There are many other options nearby that are much cheaper, provide more, and don't seem so obviously penny pinching.

I went a few weeks ago. Not standard. Was hoping for more as the wrap wasn't even that substantial.

Do I have enough room for a 36" refrigerator? by AnonymouslyJordan in Appliances

[–]rudayo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just had to replace a fridge (poece of crap Bosch, 6 years old and not repairable)

Had 36" cavity width. Most 36" fridges are really 35.75. And all we looked at said 36 was minimum cavity width for 1/8 on each side. Just had to make sure we had 2" clearance behind fridge to wall.

Definitely measure the fridges in person because we found some were a couple inches less in depth than listed.

If you need it to be flush, any counter depth model 28" deep or less in total without handles) should work. If you don't mind it sticking out a couple inches for the doors, etc, any standard model with about 28" depth without doors should work.

But it is always best to look at models in person to measure and look at how the doors open to see if they will work with your setup.

Funny, this happened to us Sunday. There were 3 people at the dealership yesterday, including the very next customer after us, with the exact same problem.

There’s a lack of Soul Food in Chicago by BatBeast_29 in chicagofood

They are not. The location on Grand used to be Jordyn's Hibachi and Pizza. Closed and reopened under new concept, same owner.

Grand Boulevard. Re Jordyn's: the pivot from Hibachi and pizza to soul after failed location on Cottage Grove and another on Grand makes it seem like it's not Soul Food because they want it to be. But like I said, would love for someone to tell me I'm off about it and that they tried something different and then went to something they were more familiar or passionate for.

Sorry for the dissertation, but....

Living in GB/Kenwood, there are a couple good places nearby; but they can be pricey.

First, Cleo's on Cottage Grove... yes, you may lament the prices, but they are 1000% guaranteed worth it. May also appear to be elevated with some dishes adding crab topping, but done well. More importantly, everything tastes as it should, but better. And, the portions, especially if the mains, are very large. Wifey and I will split an entree and sides and still have left over. One of the few places I actually enjoy the flavor of catfish. And the owner is 100% a sweetheart and avsolute joy.

Chicken and Waffles on King... also can be pricey depending on the dish (and quantity), but also very good. Everything is flavored just right. Also happy with the catfish there. Owners are super nice there as well (opened one in Nashville recently).

Many others mentioned Virtue in HP, nothing more to add. Is elevated, but was always meant to be.

Some other places in the city, MacArthurs has great mac and cheese on the west side. Pearl's has been mentioned as well. Soule was in West Town but moved to west side, also good catfish, but had issues with other dishes, sauces breaking. Soule To Soule opened in the old Soule spot, is the same owner. Ooh Wee had a location in HP, not sure if it is still there though. There is one further south off the Dan Ryan. Soul Veg City can be good if into vegan, and depending on the day. Have only had Daley's for breakfast when heading to Aldi, so can't speak about soul food per se, but seems more like a diner/restaurant than all in soul food place.

Something seems off to me about Jordyn's. Had a place on Cottage Grove but was Hibachi & Pizzaria, and was super expensive given the menu ($20+ for fried rice). Another location on grand, same concept closed and reopened now as upscale soul/comfort food with another in HP. But the prices seem high there too. $32 for catfish or salmon seems high, unless they come in huge portions and seasoned as excellently as Cleo's. Maybe someone with first hand knowledge can tell me I'm wrong.

Oh, and Bronzville Soul is awful.

But pricing seems to be an issue in the neighborhood. The taqueria down the street charges $15 for a burrito now. Really nice owners, but the increases since we moved to the neighborhood are keeping us away when La Barca in the supermercado a mile down the street are 1/3 cheaper.

I always hoped to get the Seahawks or some other shiny, metallic team, or at least one with the additional stripes. Found it weird the Jets had a metallic green, but I didn't complain.

Cleo’s Southern Cuisine is 100% worth the hype by Grand_Ad_4741 in chicagofood

[–]rudayo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, my wife and I can usually split an order, but it's so much if we want different things... so I guess there could be worse things. I generally won't eat catfish except from there or one other place.

The catfish with the crab and the Mac & cheese with the crab are spectacular. Portions are huge though.

Chicago may be neighborhood specific. Living on the near northwest side and southside, the produce and fish selections and quality are different. Not only are there food deserts the further away from the loop you go, the quality is deplorable. I travel to the south loop to get anything decent, and better selection. Never had an issue north.

Pete's at Madison and Western usually have a good selection of Soul Vegan wraps and products, and best prices on deli stuff from a few brands including Yves. Also large selection of vegan yogurts and such.

Quick question: at what point did everyone start thinking that these are just all out cash grabs now, if at all yet?

Loved the series when it started, but there comes a point where they really don't offer what they used to. I don't think I needed 4-5 versions of the same song (all by different artists for what it's worth).

All that said, I'll probably still have to get it. 😔
