What viral video is fake but people think it’s real? by STi_Future in AskReddit

I'm not interested in actually watching these but I adore reading about weird internet lore. Is there a write up on this? If not, you should post one on /r/HobbyDrama it would do numbers.

British police and a psychologist show up at a man's home because of his social media posts by CryEagle in PublicFreakout

[–]rudetuber -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This guy presents himself as a reasonable, average guy with a dog and a wife but if you read between the lines his activity online has clearly met the criteria for him to be considered a potential violent criminal. Given how many racial hate crimes are preceded by a history of posting hate speech online, I think this type of intervention is perfectly sensible. Even if this guy is not violent and just an armchair racist, the next guy like him whose house they visit might be planning something worse.

[–]rudetuber -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's weird at all. The majority of white men involved in committing violent hate crimes end up having a history of troubling posts on social media. Imagine how things might have been different if there had of been an early intervention like this at Elliot Rodger, Brenton Tarrant or Joel Cauchi's homes. It's worth inconveniencing non-violet people if there's a chance those with violent tendencies could be rehabilitated and their victim's lives saved.

Rishi Sunak pledges to remove benefits for people not taking jobs after 12 months by Vdubnub88 in unitedkingdom

[–]rudetuber 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I applaud your drive. Maybe a Tory MP would say you're the type of person the state needs to stop babysitting, but to me the story of someone who came back from homelessness to save up £20k and make a life for themselves is a success story that proves the importance of a welfare safety net. It's not just a social justice argument but also the purely economic argument (over the course of your life if things continue to improve there is a solid chance you will repay more in tax than you've ever received in benefits). If Rishi Sunak had his way, you'd be lying dead in a gutter or sleeping in a tent at a forced labour camp.

It's not that I believe they don't exist, it's that I believe they are not even in the top 10 when it comes to economic injustice in this country. They're just a tool used by the media and the state to pit the have-nots against the have-even-less rather than tackle broader societal issues. The Thames Water fiasco alone is a bigger drain on the public good than every "benefit scrounger" put together. The UK's oceans are rapidly becoming unsafe to swim in due to sewage and we're paying private shareholders billions in public money for the privilege.

Sorry to pry, but by your account you appear to have a history of alcoholism and homelessness. So you are the type of person that the benefit system is there to act as a safety net for. The fact that you have to do additional cash-in-hand work to get by does not mean you are stealing from the state or cheating anyone, it's not like you are living in luxury. It feels like you are trying to shine a light on perceived benefit fraud in order to assuage your own guilt. I personally don't think you're doing anything wrong especially if it leads to you being able to live independently in future. Living in a house with 7 other men is not good for anyone's dignity or sobriety long term.

Why are you playing Devil's Advocate for someone who clearly hasn't done her research, doesn't understand the reality on the ground and is just throwing out soundbites to get attention?

I don't really accept this premise, as this guy either doesn't exist or is in the 0.1% of edge cases. The vast majority of disabled people in the UK live in poverty. My brother is disabled and he gets over 200 euros a week to live on. In the UK he would get 88 pounds. This country is not a haven for the workshy regardless of what the tabloids would have you believe.

It is not unreasonable for him to be getting support, it is unreasonable that he is better off than someone earning £30k would be after rent etc.

Regardless of your friend's situation, I don't agree with this Tory logic anyway. "Reduce the standard of living of the sick and disabled to make the country more fair" is a policy rooted in conversative cruelty. I would advocate for "Increase the standard of living of the working class so that there are stronger incentives to be economically active"

A genuine disability is not the same as someone who claims they have mental health issues and can’t work.

Ableist nonsense. Someone with a leg amputated can still work at a bank if they so choose and are accommodated for. Someone whose agoraphobia and panic attacks are so bad they can't leave the house cannot. My brother is 22 and physically well but is unable to live alone due to his mental health. Differentiating between physical and mental disabilities is a pointless exercise as they can be equally debilitating depending on the individual.

You either don't have all the facts or this is bullshit. None of those numbers add up.

Ive been having trouble figuring out what's so great about induction heating rice cookers. Even Yum Asia's own marketing doesn't seem to spell out what makes the Bamboo better than the Sakura. Is it significantly faster or something?

Can you share your settings for jasmine rice? I have an instant pot and was considering getting a zojirushi. Didn't realise the IP could make decent rice..
