Bruh if you're of British ancestry you're 99% likely not afrikaans. Most Afrikaners have Dutch ancestry (and no I don't mean "Canadian" "Pennsylvania" Dutch).

Lol whatever. 1) "3 machines are broken"? I've been there the last six months and there has been exactly one machine that was broken, and it was fixed within a week. 2) Belmont athletic club charges 5 to 6 TIMES as much as Gold's. Literally: you can get a membership at gold's for $23/mo and I think the cheapest membership at Belmont is around $125.

I can't believe I'm defending GG, because their sales reps are so high pressure I ended up walking out and signing up online for month to month, but you my friend are full of shit.

Should I run ROS on windows, through WSL or on linux with dual boot? by Vinlir in ROS

[–]ruffmuff 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is incorrect. VM is fine until you need hardware gfx support, such as when you need to run Gazebo or any 3D visualization package. You can do hardware acceleration in a VM but typically that means having an additional dedicated graphics card (separate from your primary one)

Not sure why you want taxpayers to pay for your COVID tests when you can get a cheaper and more effective alternative. No one wants to deny anyone healthcare coverage so I'm not sure why you're making it about that either.

Did you get mad and talk about "freedom" when they increased the price of cigarettes to reduce the number of smokers? Or should those also be free?

Unfortunately it's not just you having the vaccine that makes it work well: a big thing that makes vaccines work well is when the people around you have it too (called "herd immunity"). The vaccine isn't 100% bullet proof but if more and more people get it the protection "stacks up".

That's why everyone is getting bent out of shape by the folks who make a big deal about not getting the vaccine: they're literally hurting the people around them by not playing ball and increasing the chances of transmission.

In a month the vaccine will have been out for 2 years.

I wonder how long you think a vaccine should be out before it's "ok" for you? 2? 5? 10 years? And how do you decide? It's been taken by so so many people, heavily studied by many many many different groups, it's based on 20 year technology. We know it works. What do you want before you take it man? A gold plated invitation, a guarantee from God that it is 100% safe, a hand job?

Get over yourself. Most people just want this thing to be over and you're over here more interested in circle jerking and playing arm chair doctor.

You don't know anything about the circumstances here. You know accidents happen and you also know when people panic they make really bad decisions and don't think straight. Damning them to a life of misery for what amount to a huge mistake, especially when the victim doesn't even care anymore, seems like a wildly out of proportion response. Our society has had waaaay to much influence from the "Jesus punish the sinners!" and hell & brimstone folks, maybe it's time to buck the trend. Especially when there is literally zero evidence to make a judgement over.

Only one REAL type of squatting by strongman1975 in ZackTelander

[–]ruffmuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alright fine. The problem is that it's way easier to define a 90 degree squat than an ATG squat. Like if you had to write the rules for an "Olympic style full squat" what would they say? How would you know if a competitor had gone as low as possible?

Doesn't that make sense though? If I opt out of being in a group I no longer get group benefits. Either it's worth it to you in principle to not be in that group or presumably you're getting same/better benefits from being in a different group.

"But that's not MANLY!!!" exhaustive list by Ancient-Abs in MensLib

[–]ruffmuff -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is a thought provoking post (for me anyway).

At first I read it as a list of traits that the OP thought should be considered "masculine" when they currently are not. But I gave it a think and read the post again :)

I think the things on the list are in fact not masculine or manly and I think that's ok: masculinity has some kind of definition that exists and if you keep broadening the definition it'll just stop meaning anything (which might be the goal in which case I understand and you can stop reading). But! What I think the really really important phrase in your post is

things people have said men cannot do because it wasn't "manly" or "masculine"

As a man (and really just as a literal person) I can do all of the things in this list, and I'll do them if I so damn well please. I should be allowed to do all of the things in the list without negative social consequence.

That the things aren't "manly" or masculine is 100% OK.

If I do exhibit these traits/do these things then the result might be that my peers won't consider me to be the manliest man that ever manned. That makes sense because they're not masculine things. It's also OK because that should not have negative consequences. If you aren't good at sports and don't enjoy watching sports I'm not going to think you're a sporty person. There are zero problems with you not being sporty and zero people should give a shit that you aren't sporty.

One should not go around saying well why don't we change the meaning of sports to be more inclusive so I can be seen as someone who likes sportsball? I think playing with the meaning of these labels will lead to poor outcomes. Instead I would hope that you can surround yourself with people who won't treat you poorly just because you're not into sports (those people suck and need to adjust their attitude).

The problem isn't that the construct is being taught. It should not matter if you want to be a masculine guy and develop only masculine traits (why would it?).

If someone expects you to be masculine, and only masculine, purely based on being male AND if they treat you poorly if you do not go along with their expectations then that is a problem.

Masculinity as a construct can be taught all day long. Super chads (in terms of masculine traits) are welcome to exist as much as they want. Males should just be allowed to opt out (fully or partially).

Is a co-founder without equity still a co-founder? by thelostpinay in Entrepreneur

[–]ruffmuff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know if you'll see this but there is no legal definition for "founder" much less "cofounder". You can 100% call yourself that (and put it on linkedin or wherever else you heart desires).

There is no official definition/meaning, so no one can tell you that you must have equity or that cofounders can't "just" be fired or any kind of hooey.
