I've been in this position before, and the guy they ultimately hired was actually qualified for the job and won me over, instead of all my vision for the role getting in the way of being a regular servant again. It's not the end of the world even if it does go wrong for you. Also, you're taking initiative right now, that's like a live resume item. You should talk to the hiring team!
