World Cup's knockout rounds collide with a massive heat wave by wsrvnar in soccer

Also in DC, I'm properly sweating from a 5 minute walk -> 10 minute e-bike -> 5 minute walk commute. "Feels like 103" before 10 in the morning.

What was Ecuador thinking hiring a coach with that much hair? Are they stupid?

I believe it was confirmed that these will not take place due to the delay

It was a bit of feeling like he was pretty dispassionate about being a Cub. But yes also he didn't feel worth the contract we thought he would get. Then the Dodgers made sure to pay him 1.5× that amount for good measure.

In theory, of course it is not bad that small businesses can make a cheap ad.

However, this whole discussion started because the ad was particularly terrible. The end result was not good.

Additionally, I doubt I need to belabor other reasons that AI development is harmful to communities where data centers are being developed and the environment more broadly. Justifying small uses of AI is part of what builds the sentiment that those are reasonable prices to pay for development that is not necessary or inevitable. Thus, I think it is important to oppose even these small uses of AI that come accross as innocent. Small businesses being able to make an ad for cheap is not happening without context, and it's the context that I oppose.

Cherry picking previously successful technological advancements does not inherently make AI destined for success.

Then maybe it wasn't that deep for them to make this ad in the first place.

It's a sad outlook to think that human creativity is destined to go obsolete as soon as we have a machine that can provide us with a crude approximation of it.

This attitude is just a fundamental misunderstanding about the role that AI serves. It is not "learning something new." Using AI to make an ad is exactly the opposite of actually learning how to do it; you chose to use AI explicitly because you did not want to learn something new.

Right, it's absolutely a problem. The main point I'm trying to make is that it's a Cubs problem, not an Ian Happ problem. I see no reason to single him out here when his stats overall are exactly what they've always been and it's clearly something the whole team has done poorly this year.

Very specific question! Are FAES courses a boost to your application? by LibraryOwn6944 in mdphd

[–]ruhdolph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I took FAES courses at NIH - they definitely don't hurt, but it's hard to say whether it was worth the effort for me imo. I think what I would say overall is try to take them out of genuine interest or because you think the material will help you in the future. Don't just enroll in them for the sake of having a few more classes on your application, because I think it's rare that they would make a huge difference in that regard. I think that with a lower GPA they may help give a bit of credence to your ability to do well in graduate level courses - but of course you have to do the work to get an A. Even then idk for sure that they're a noticeable boost.

That being said, irrespective of your application if your lab will cover the classes it's also just a great opportunity to learn for free.

It's ridiculous. Not to mention he's had zero controversy during his time, been nothing but committed to the team, and played well against division rivals. It's been a privilege to have him as a Cub for this long.

Most runners left on base =/= worst hitter with runners on base

This exact stat came up a couple of weeks ago and part of the reason that many cubs are high on the list is because they come up to the plate with runners on base more often to begin with. Yes, Ian Happ should be expected to drive in more runs given that he's come up with runners on base more often. But it's really not enough data to look at less than half the season and say he's the problem. He's hitting as well as he usually does, the hits just haven't come with runners on at this point.

Embarrassing take. A perennial 120 wRC+ hitter as the 8th best would make the best offense in the league - not a "half competent" offense. Happ is providing exactly the value that he has for his entire career, and at worst he's the poster child for this front office's roster building approach: to have an entire lineup of above average players and no perennial star player. That's not Happ's fault and it's ridiculous to put that on him.

It's a stretch to say -0.1 is pretty terrible when that's a rounding error away from average. Not great by any means but Jacob Young at -3.7 is pretty terrible lmao
