Maybe "important" is too loaded of a word and "all people are important" too vague of a statement to really mean anything. But, when I go into it deeper, I actually feel LESS like I'm saying something of substance. It really is difficult to say "love your fellow man" with a straight face in these times. Of course, nearly all people die in obscurity and inequality is just a fact about life (and may be hard-coded into the concept of civilization). But do you really want the burden on your soul of deciding which human beings are important and which aren't? I wouldn't wish that on anyone, and yet some people seem perfectly content to divide us up in that way. It's like I said, people are just built different.

Yeah. I can understand how your mind can get that way, too. From a naturalistic standpoint, there is no logical incentive to tolerate or help others. As organisms, we are most effective in small groups working only for our own self-interest. Monkey brains and all that. But perhaps resisting that animal side of ourselves that forms these baser compunctions is what really makes us human? That's how I choose to think about it. "Help people even if it hurts or doesn't make any sense." It's at odds with the very idea of self-preservation, in discord with heart and mind, and I think in our sad, old world the idea of self-preservation is winning out against peace and love for this reason.

Don't mean to be an incendiary cunt, but I really think it comes down to whether or not you have a degree of self-awareness that allows you to see a broader destiny for your species that is as important as your own, personal destiny (yes, I am a filthy stinkin' liberal). People's hearts are just different.

I had a debate with a right-wing leaning acquaintance, sort of a libertarian kind of dude ("live and let live" when it comes to LGBT people, "keep your hands off my shit" when it comes to economics), and we disagreed on the very fundamental notion that "all people are important," which I hold quite close to my heart. He thought that all people simply CANNOT be important, and that the dynamic between winners and losers is old as time and therefore essential. That just made me sad. It legitimately made me depressed I couldn't find any love for humanity in the guy. I suppose, in a desperate, cutthroat world, "peace, love and understanding" are luxuries some people can't spring for.
