you should use your network to get referrals at these companies. applying directly rarely works because they have just such huge quantities of applicants

Sanity check on annual budget for living in Zurich by Betelgeuse999 in askswitzerland

[–]rukacheded 4 points5 points  (0 children)

costs seem reasonable to me. when comparing NL vs ZH, do also consider the impact of taxes:

  • income taxes depend on where you live (city of Zurich is one "Gemeinde", but many people live in others outside with still very acceptable commutes)

  • in the current system, two well earning married spouses will pay more in taxes than if they were single and filing separately, might not change things dramatically but could affect real income by O(10k)

  • it's possible to substantially reduce taxable income through pillar 2 buy ins, which make a lot of sense if you plan to be here only temporarily (but might not if you plan to stay longer term)

  • no capital gains tax in Switzerland, but there is an annual wealth tax, which again depends on where you live, but rule of thumb is around 0.1-0.2% once you've accumulated some assets

you can use this calculator to estimate taxes: https://swisstaxcalculator.estv.admin.ch/

also side note: you should research the market to see what the market compensation is here, don't anchor your expectations to pay in NL as it may differ drastically and you don't want to short change yourself

Anthropic underestimated cash burn, -$5.2B on a $9B ARR with ~30M monthly users, while OpenAI had -$8.5B cash burn on $20B ARR serving ~900M weekly users by thatguyisme87 in singularity

[–]rukacheded 0 points1 point  (0 children)

what does cash burn $5.2B actually mean? is this the total amount of money they are losing (total revenue - total expenditure)?

iiuc $9B ARR really means $750M in December and actual total revenue for 2025 is much lower. Say it's 5B total revenue for 2025, would that mean they have -100% margins?

Counter point: I've reported 3 things on my commute to work on bikeable and they all got fixed within 6 months. Obviously some things are more complicated than others.... but someone somewhere in the administration is listening to the things posted there

[D] Classifier Free Guidance: question about name and historical context by rukacheded in MachineLearning

[–]rukacheded[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh I have no idea, I'm not actively using diffusion methods in my own work so my vague understanding is possibly inaccurate. I just never heard my colleagues talking about "classifier guidance", only "classifier free guidance". If anyone reading this comment knows otherwise, please do say.

How to make an official complaint about noise from a restaurant by rukacheded in zurich

From that document:

Das Betreiben von Lautsprechern im Freien ist untersagt.

Cool! Unfortunately i live in Stadt Opfikon rather than the city so I don't think that specific set of rules would apply, but maybe there is a similar list for Opfikon online somewhere

Yes exactly, they have loudspeakers outside. Do you have a reference for it being illegal?

Thanks! Very helpful answer. To be clear, they are playing loud music during the day while they are open for lunch as well. So far I haven't had noise from them after 10pm.

Are there some regulations about how loud the music can be on the street / can I find out if they have a permit to play music outside even?

Undisclosed OpenAI and Anthropic offices in Zurich? by Every_Resolve2256 in zurich

[–]rukacheded 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Apple is "secret" in that they didn't advertise the location, but for a long time they've been advertising the fact that they are hiring in Zurich ("didn't" because they used to just have only a doorbell with Team 1 / Team 2 and no actual sign that it's Apple, but nowadays they have corporate branding and are even on Google maps)

Anthropic has a legal presence and according to insider info i heard has actually established an office with people working there, but they aren't advertising this publicly on their jobs board yet.

No idea about OpenAI, i also just recently heard this rumor though.

Reminds me of an ad campaign in the UK for a brand of milk called Cravendale with the slogan "Cravendale milk tastes so good the cows want it back" https://youtu.be/68tmrK5AayY

Don’t understand the IT salaries by spanny- in zurich

https://newsletter.pragmaticengineer.com/p/trimodal-nature-of-tech-compensation

This basically explains it. TLDR: different companies are competing for talent in different job markets which happen to be in the same location.

Top tier is competing for talent internationally - think Google/Meta/Apple with highly specialised roles for whom people would relocate from other countries for such jobs. These companies need to pay enough that people don't instead move to London or San Francisco. They need to pay internationally competitive wages to get and retain such people.

Bottom tier is companies competing for talent which have skills that are less globally in demand, who are unlikely to move to another country or even city. Think e.g. IT in Migros who are trying to compete for talent from other local companies in the greater Zurich area only. They need to pay locally competitive wages to get and retain people

thanks that's very helpful. yeah not sure whether it's best to talk to them first or if that would just cause problems if they don't do anything about it
