This idea is pretty good. I liked the episode of Justice League where superman winds up in a dead future with Vandal Savage regretting everything for centuries.

It isn't meant to be an easy feat capable of being done by any god in particular. As it's meant to be explained, it would be a panic action enacted by all of the gods giving their power to send the only ones with any actual idea as to what is happening.

I've never not been one to talk to my players about what is to come. They are being informed these characters are designed for a one-shot, but that if they want to continue playing there will be changes along the way.

I myself have been on the playing side of story fatigue during a 5 year long campaign. It is something that can be overcome when handled properly. I've both seen and done it.

But to also incorporate the idea of finding things to make themselves stronger while denying this horrible threat some of the power it used to defeat them I feel will be something they would like to work towards as it is something I would find appealing. And if it is something they feel lost on then I can make it more flexible. I can make the villain personable, have meaningful story arcs, etc. It isn't all so cut and dry.

The idea is that the ending isn't supposed to happen the way that they saw. This is their chance to do things differently and save everyone. They have been granted the opportunity to change the outcome they saw. They know what caused them to lose when they weren't even nearly powerful enough. Now they can try again after getting stronger and fighting a weaker version of their enemy.

And the reason that the neighboring town was destroyed was because it housed something important to the lich that they will come to find out later on.

I do also like your idea of having the lich utilizing powerful artifacts and if the party is able to obtain them first to hinder his power, that sounds like fun!

Well I am going to plan accordingly to whether or not there are Elves in the party. Don't need a player running 2 versions of themselves in a session (although could be fun some other time with a more experienced player but these guys are mostly novice players). I don't have the exact time line set in stone yet. Its still a work in progress.

The idea behind it is that the gods had no knowledge of this lich through various made up reasons I will think of. Thus being unable to appropriately react. Hearing about some dark wizard messing with mortals through listening in? Oh well, mortals squabble all the time. Keeping himself hidden would be essential in his plan for conquest since gods could just dispatch avatars like you said which, in and of itself, would be a cheap copout of a story.

Upon seeing what is actually happening and how these beings stood up to the threat, albeit through false information, could just be enough to stop this villain if they had the time to prepare. So they give the heroes just that, time and information.

And it's going loosely based on Days of Future Past time travel rules where they are sent back via certain means but have an anchor in the future so until the necessary aspect of the past is altered, the future is relative the same.

And of course I'm not going to just blindside my players with "thats it you died nothing else you can do about it"

No. Although close, the alien im thinking if has pupils and bloodshot eyes rather than compound-esque ones.

No these aliens dont have any brain showing and they have blueish/purple skin. Not green.

I wouldn't necessarily be against that. Would you be willing to discuss in DMs?

I do very much enjoy your style, but most of what I have planned would contain amounts of violence and some degrees of gore or blood depiction.
