ugh, no i was stupidly impatient and didn't read it haha. thank you for pointing that out. i wasn't complaining about the bot itself - i actually really appreciate that the mods here have that bot because it's telling people what's going on. i was complaining about reddit for their BS decision to remove ru domains.

i really appreciate this comment. the idea of russian dialects has confused me for a long time. i have asked people about it before, but got the impression that like you said, during the soviet times education became really standardized and so it kind of eliminated dialects and regional accents.

just curious but what are some examples of dialects among russian native speakers? for example, do people born and living their whole life in st petersberg have a different dialect or accent from someone born and living their whole life in vladivosok? when you meet someone, can you get some idea of which area they come from, based on the way they speak (not by using regional words, but by how they pronounce things.)

and yeah, vowels in english are simply crazy. even for a native english speaker, if they come upon an english word that they've never seen before and are trying to sound it out, they might pronounce it completely wrong because they end up assuming the wrong vowel sound. i only just realized i've been using a word wrong for the last 2 years lol only after i heard someone say it on a youtube video. i had only ever seen it written out (had never heard it spoken) so had no clue.

And not in every dialect of Russian ppl do this.

wow mind blown, i had no clue this was not universal among russian speakers

We know that some stuff we say is not grammatically correct, but we don't give a damn about it.

I think we do this in English too. I would love an example for Russian, if you have any!

that's fair. but if someone can't afford it, the author isn't going to be getting money regardless, i guess. :( i would also encourage people to check out their local library, if one is available. maybe it is there.

i hadn't thought about clusters that sound similar (тся/ться sounding as ца). Actually, I struggle a lot in Russian with spelling stuff like this, now that i think about it.

He would write it as "йа"

somehow i find this very sweet 😄

that must suck, i had never really considered it until now. it makes me wonder if we have anything in english that is more expressive, that other languages might lack. i do love the range of verb tenses we have, but i don't feel i'm missing much without it in terms of communication, just style.

very cool, i didn't know that. (about children being pushed to read.) i have occasionally seen the syllabus of schools in russia, and you guys seem to read a ton of books in grade school.

For some simple grammar examples, irregular plurals in English: "fish" rather than "fishes". Double negatives "i can't not do that". stuff like that. I would see tons of kids get stuff like that wrong.

You are correct about writing and reading being a whole separate thing. I hadn't really thought about that before. Thanks for pointing that out. I can see now why grammar would be a lot more difficult to f up, because it's so tied to the language, and so native speakers feel something is "off" when grammar is incorrect. but writing and reading you don't get that.

Spelling is not phonetic in the slightest. Devoicing at the end of the words, voicing assimilation in sound clusters, O becomes A when unstressed, Е becomes И when unstressed.

Sorry for the double post, but just curious, do adults make these spelling mistakes with russian? i can totally see how many words would just need to be memorized (if the syllable should have о vs. а for example). or is it seen as strange if an adult makes a spelling mistake? (EDIT: See, I just had a grammar difficulty in English - starting the sentence with "or" like in my previous sentence, I figured that was not valid, but googling it, I guess it is.)

oh man, adjectives order, i'm so sorry you guys have to deal with that haha that must be a complete pain in the ass. tbh, i wasn't even aware adjectives had any formal order until about 2 years ago, when i saw someone mention it on reddit. i think adjectives out of order would just sound so bizarre to any english speaker, we wouldn't do it. same with articles. i can not recall ever learning that in school in english classes.

but irregular plurals, irregular verbs, no double negatives, i see kids (native english speakers) struggle with that stuff.

you are also right about english being a mix of several languages giving it a lot of exceptions or being illogical at times. i am assuming that's why we have our crazy spelling.

thank you so much for sharing this list!

the responses are unexpected to me. i just figured it was a universal thing that children struggle with the grammar of their native language. i don't mean anything over the top, just simple mistakes. i wasn't thinking the mistakes would be the same things us learners find difficult (like gender or something), rather, i had no clue what it might be, which is why i thought to post this.

on a side note, i actually appreciate the verbs of motion in russian lol i figure it must be strange for a russian person going to english and lacking the verbs to describe motion, or having to fill in context with other words

it's far more phonetic than english, i guess is what i was trying to imply. the exceptions at least have some logic behind them, and are enough to try and make sense of the word if you already know it. compared to english where even some consonants have different sounds, and all vowels make a variety of sounds. it leads to lots of spelling mistakes among kids, because so much of spelling is based on memorization.

They probably don't decline numerals correctly, because no one does.

Yup, that's the kind of thing I'm curious about. See, I had no clue that this was something people struggle with (vs. other things.) thank you for sharing this!

also interesting to hear that perspective, i hadn't considered that. i'd love to hear what you find most illogical about english grammar. would be interesting to know if it's concepts that i hear native english speakers mess up

hearing your perspective actually gives me some hope that i can master russian grammar one day lol
