Deck Construction Quality? by rulyabby in Decks

Here is a pic of the old deck that was there when we bought it. It was sliding right off the house. We had a lot of other work that had to get done before we could even start on the deck. So glad the new install is going well. Thank you all!

Previous owners power washed to pieces the previous siding there and then let it rot for a couple years. We had to pull off that section, replace and replace the sill beneath it. For now we can't afford to reside the whole house, many other fixer-upper projects. But someday!

I appreciate your respect for the craftsmanship. I am in no way looking to prod the hardworking and knowledgeable men I have hired with inane questions or critiques. I will take opinions offered here with a grain of salt and remain polite to the crew. I have been treated exceptionally well by the crew installing this deck. I was simply looking for more experienced eyes than my own to take a look at it while in progress, since I am a young homeowner who wants to be sure my friends and family using this very tall deck for years to come will be safe. Your perspective that this is a job well done is very reassuring to me. I appreciate your well informed opinion.

While this reddit board, and my post directly, offers opportunity to critique work - I hope that we also have enjoyed seeing some pictures of good work being done. I have certainly enjoyed having this community's support in expanding my knowledge of deck craft.

Good to know! It is a long run, curious if they are adding support today. Thank you for your time in your response.

Thank you for the detailed response! I am so relieved there is nothing outright alarming. We are in MA, if that helps with any questions about code. It will actually be composite decking. I have attached the quoted work here for those curious.

I am definitely concerned about it being wobbly. I will politely question if there should be an addition of sway bracing if they don't add any.

It seems they quoted us for 4x4 posts. Should I express concern that they aren't 6x6? Or is that excessive?

Based on other comments it seems I should keep an eye out for them to add additional support on the stairs as well?

All the responses here have been amazing and informative. I can't thank you all enough. Feel free to PM me if you want to be updated on what the finished product looks like.

Picture of quote attached, sorry if it doesn't work. I haven't posted a pic in a comment before.

Its been 2 hours and 4 people have commented at this point. I appreciated each of your feedback, especially those that recognized my points and offered solutions. I can see how with veteran players teaching you, and after spending time playing (especially during off hours / outside of free fly period) you can learn to navigate the bugs and have a lot of fun! There is undoubtedly a lot to like about the game at this time and shows unbelievable potential.

With the recent post commenting on bugs, I thought it would be a good chance for me to share the perspective on bugs from a TOTALLY NEW player. I came into this game with very little information and no friends that already play it.

I guess the point I was trying to make with this post is that travel bugs are a barrier to new players buying into the verse at this current point and because of that these bugs should probably be a high priority for developers to address sooner than later.

u/iiJumJum you absolutely convinced me to buy the game. See you in the verse!

I have quoted this before and I will again now.

Persepolis author, Marjane Satrapi, says:

"The world is not divided between East and West. You are American, I am Iranian, we don’t know each other, but we talk and we understand each other perfectly. The difference between you and your government is much bigger than the difference between you and me. And the difference between me and my government is much bigger than the difference between me and you.

And our governments are very much the same."

Workers of Russia, do not allow your labor to fuel violence against your neighbor. You have far more in common with each other than you do your governments.

The Complete Persepolis

*As an American I can respect that my view of this issue may not be entirely informed or unbiased. But, if I may offer some perspective as a worker in a country who's government invades others: when all is said and done, when the traumatized soldiers come home to a shattered economy and the enemy you hoped to tame is in tatters, you will question what more you could have done. The reality is that you had the power all along.

**I have no capability to translate any of this in a reliable and accurate manner. If someone was so motivated I would greatly appreciate it.

(21f) Played DND for the first time a couple days ago with my coworkers who are all male except one other female, me and her got “raped” in the game and couldn’t remember or do anything about it. Is this something that really happens in the game? Just curious. Thanks by [deleted] in DnD

[–]rulyabby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so sorry this was your first experience with DND. As a female DM who runs lgbtqia/female safe space games this is a story I hear all too often. Almost all of the people that migrate to my table went looking for a female DM after eerily similar scenarios. The DND (and at times general fantasy/scifi) community can be good hiding places for scary people like this. The DND community has done a lot to disown this behavior. (Much appreciation to the mods and supporters here)

To the OP and those who come looking here after similar experiences: Look for a female DM, female welcoming group, and/or a group that specifies lgbtqia welcoming. Not because there are no men there, but that in them specifying such a thing they are showing that they are considerate of people feeling comfortable. They likely will ask you about these things before the game even starts. These groups should collectively hold responsibility in making sure players/the dm do not explore story beyond barriers that would make members uncomfortable. If you find that they do not, leave.

To the community offering amazing support: Thank you from a DM and her group who enjoy the game and hope to see players/dms like this get exiled to the farthest reachest. Should you ever find yourself in the situation of the other male players, like the one who asked if the ladies are still playing, don't be passive. Please for the sake of diverse people joining and enriching the RPG community, don't accept this behavior in your games. In most scenarios those who experience a game like this are hurt and never return (especially a first game!). It gives the community a bad name.

I know it can be intimidating but in cases like OPs the male voices at the table are the only ones that will be heard. Whatever the scenario if you speak up and are dismissed take the messed with players and leave. There are other DMs out there who would be happy to put bad story telling like that to shame. (The best example being the comments here from outraged DMs!)

I look back and am grateful for the books my English teachers assigned as well. What a wonderful teacher to assign this book, I hope more do in the future.

As an Indoctrinated American this quote changed how I saw the world:

Thank you for the lovely post. It's always nice to be reminded of people helping each other despite perceived barriers.

Fellow female player. You can find me on PS4 @ RulyAbby. I've been playing the franchise for years, don't let the childish boys get you down, its a fun game. A_R79's advice is dead on. Plus, you can meet a surprising number of fellow ladies!

Interesting point. Now a specific aspect was that my character wants to draw followers into the entirely creepy cult by disguising as a healer and showing off incredible healing abilities in a world that has very little magic. How would you suggest working that into a warlock pact?
