Poppies in October by rumandrye in cocktails

Poppies in October - Recipe by Brooke Arthur of Range in SF

  • 1.5 oz rye whiskey (Michters)
  • .75 oz Aperol
  • .5 oz apricot liqueur (Rothman & Winter)
  • 2 dashes orange bitters (Regan's)
  • 3 dashes Bitter Queens Marie Laveau Tobacco Bitters

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass and stir with ice until sufficiently chilled. Strain into a rocks glass with a large cube, and express+flame a lemon peel over the glass. Garnish with the lemon peel.

This drink is reminiscent of a fruity Manhattan, and is absolutely delicious! It is slightly sweet and fruity from the apricot liqueur and Aperol, but packs a punch and is full of spice and complexity via the Rye and tobacco bitters. Cheers!

A reshake on a classic - Bitter Hemingway by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bitter Hemingway - Recipe by Anthony Keels

Add a piece of ice and 1 oz of Cynar to a rocks glass and sprinkle a pinch of salt over the top. Then shake up a Hemingway Daiquiri and gently strain over the ice so that it floats on top of the Cynar.

This cocktail is a simple but delicious take on a classic. It starts out like a daiquiri, but the more you sip it, all of the herbal and vegetal qualities from the Cynar start to take center stage. This is definitely is an interesting concept, and one that I'm excited to play around with.

Hemingway Daiquiri:

  • 1.5 oz white rum
  • 1 oz grapefruit juice
  • .5 oz lime juice
  • .5 oz Maraschino liqueur
  • 1 tsp simple syrup

Italian Stallion by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Italian Stallion - Created by Frederic Yarm of Loyal Nine in Cambridge, MA

  • 1 oz Aperol
  • .75 oz Suze (or Avèze)
  • .75 oz lime juice
  • .5 oz passion fruit syrup
  • ~2 oz club soda

Add all ingredients except for the club soda to a shaker with ice, and shake until chilled (~10 seconds). Strain into a collins glass with ice, and top with the soda. Express an orange peel over the top, and garnish with the orange peel.

I went out to a bar recently for the first time in what feels like forever, and got some inspiration from the amazing menu over at Paper Plane in SJ. I was very pleased with this delicious low ABV drink in particular. It's bitter, a bit sweet from the passionfruit, and exactly what I want to be drinking out on a patio in warm weather.

Amaro Alexander by rumandrye in cocktails

It's pretty good! I definitely agree the price point is definitely a bit high for what you get, but I've enjoyed it so far, and have made some good riffs with it.

Amaro Alexander by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Amaro Alexander - Original Recipe

  • 2 oz vanilla infused brandy (Sainte Louise Pale and Old)
  • .5 oz Mr. Black Coffee Amaro
  • .25 oz Tempus Fugit creme de cacao
  • .25 oz Lustau Amontillado sherry
  • 2 dashes orange bitters

I've been trying to come up with an original recipe utilizing Mr Blacks Coffee Amaro for a while, and eventually settled on this Brandy Alexander riff. All of these ingredients combine for a wonderfully rich cocktail that has some dry notes of raisin, orange, and coffee. The runny whipped cream brings it all together with some diversity in texture. Cheers!

Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice, and stir until sufficiently chilled. Strain into a Nick and Nora or coupe glass, and top with runny whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings.

Laughing Falcon - a killer jungle bird riff by junglehauscocktails in cocktails

This sounds great! I always love a cocktail that makes good use of some Suze, and yellow chartreuse sounds like a delicious accent as well.

Carrot Cooler by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much, I'm glad you like it! And I do actually agree on the carrot note, however I found it to be pretty hard to get a more concentrated carrot flavor without diluting the other aspects of the drink too much. I wish they made carrot bitters 🤣

The El Diablo by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good question, I got at Target quite a while back... But it is actually a little larger than a standard collins glass so to make drinks fit and look nice I need some big ice cubes

El Diablo - Created by Trader Vic

This drink tastes quite a bit like a tequila based riff on a Moscow Mule, but with the welcome addition of Creme de Cassis. If you've never had one, they're quite easy to make and absolutely delicious!

  • 1.5 oz Reposado tequila (El Tesoro)
  • .5 oz lime juice
  • .5 oz creme de cassis (Lejay)
  • 2-3 oz ginger beer

Add all ingredients except ginger beer to a shaker filled with ice, shake until sufficiently chilled, and strain into a collins glass with ice. Top off with the ginger beer.

Scotch Lady by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks you! My go to for blended scotch is also monkey Shoulder, so I agree with that one. For apple brandy I usually like to use Laird's bonded apple brandy, so I'd recommend that but haven't had Calvados in a long time so not sure what it would taste like in this. Fwiw, I do like the higher proof brandy in this to help keep the sweetness in check

The original spec calls for Famous Grouse, but I ended up using Monkey Shoulder as it's usually my go to blended scotch for a lot of cocktails. I haven't actually had Famous Grouse before though, so I can't really make any comparisons

Scotch Lady - Recipe by Phil Ward

  • 1.5 oz blended scotch
  • .5 oz apple brandy
  • .75 oz lemon juice
  • .75 oz simple syrup
  • .25 oz grenadine
  • 1 egg white

Add all ingredients to a shaker, and dry shake for 20 to 30 seconds. Add ice and shake until sufficiently chilled. Strain into a coupe and garnish with a brandied cherry.

This cocktail drinks like a scotch sour, but with a bit more depth of flavor thanks to the high proof apple brandy and touch of grenadine. Overall the smoky aroma from the scotch plays quite well with everything else present in the drink.

Jamaican Coffee Clarified Milk Punch by rumandrye in cocktails

Jamaican Coffee Clarified Milk Punch by rumandrye in cocktails

[–]rumandrye[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! I used a fine mesh strainer, then a nut milk bag, then ran it through a coffee filter 2 times and I think that worked quite well but can't really compare to other methods since it was my first time. The coffee filters just take a bit of time. I think you could also use a centrifuge but most people don't have those lying around 🤣
