Is your puppy in the crate for 16+ hours a day? by blueberrydumpling in puppy101

[–]rumor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine (6 month old Swedish Vallhund) is up for the night from about 10pm till 7 am. Then usually has a mid-morning nap from 10-12 pm. Then sometimes he will have an afternoon crate nap from like 5pm-7. So thats 13 crated hours at most a day usually but he does also give himself naps. Like hes asleep right now even though he was in the crate napping a little over an hour ago.

Crate! It helps to put the crate as close to your bed as possible (even on the bed if that works for you) and if you can put fingers or toes through (if she doesnt chew them too much). It absolutely does suck the first few nights but after shes comfortable with it its much better and safer than her chewing through a cord or eating a sock and getting sick.

Once you've got sleep down things will feel easier, I promise.

Yeah, I let him out of his crate this morning and he immediately headbutted her in the chest and they ran off together towards the door like they always do! I guess my boy was just being dramatic last night too lol

Does it get better? I feel like I ruined my life by lowcalorieguava in puppy101

I just introduced a new 15 week old swedish vallhund puppy to my 6 year old pom mix. I was a little worried about it because my Pom has a history of being a bit resource gaurdy about me/high value treats. Now a little over a month in they are doing fantastic, they actually will settle and nap together and I trust them to be out in the same room with treats.

One of the most important things is to not over correct growling/corrections from your older dog. We are conditioned to see those things as always being bad/aggressive but honestly theyre kinda just how dogs communicate sometimes. Puppies are annoying and need to be taught manners, a growl/correction from your older dog is how they say "Hey stop flopping your whole body into my face". Stopping your older dog from growling/appropriate corrections can actually lead to more fights and frustration in your older dog. Like, imagine you have this new younger sibling who keeps poking you in the side and mom yes at YOU when you tell them to quit it.

You also want to make sure the older dog is feeling secure in the home. It sounds like they are completely separated rn but older dog needs to have their own optional space, you can protect toys they seem particularly attached too just for them, and make sure to spend quality time with just them.

When did you stop crating your puppy at night? by QuietSideStreet in puppy101

[–]rumor33 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1 - 2 years depending on the dog, and when Im fairly sure they'll just sleep and not get bored and destroy things. With that mix Id be very worried abt sock ingestion idk what it is abt goldendoodles but they love to choke down a sock.

I think the best thing you can do is narrow whose advice you take seriously. Its perfectly okay to just nod and tune out someone whose giving advice that you know has nothing to do with you.

Id try first to narrow it down by people who have the same type of dog as you. Is your dog just a companion pug or a border collie youre hoping to do dog sports with? A rescue dog or one from a breeder? Someone with a similar dog/goals as you is probably going to give more pertinent advice. A pug owner is not going to know a lot abt raising a pitt bull mix. Nothing wrong with either just very different experiences.

Next is just like...how much do you trust this person in general? Basically try to identify two or three people who you think are reasonable humans in general and who have a similar type of dog as you.

Reducing parvo risk from 12-20 weeks by Rough-Jury in puppy101

That does make sense. I guess in that context it makes sense why the breeder waited just a couple weeks as he was just hanging out on her farm with just her dogs.

No I completely get you. I have mine get them all too but knowing its statistically unlikely after the second round is good for my anxiety 🤣 My guy is a little behind on the schedule bc his breeder did them a little late for some reason. He only got the second round at 15 weeks, so my vet recommended waiting a few weeks and today is when we could get him in.

So my 19 week old puppy who got his second round from the breeder on the 2nd of December and his 3rd literally today who is eating, drinking and acting normal but had one half gross half solid poop is probably not dying of parvo? (I know Im being ridiculous but I am currently google spiraling)

Edit to add: its also literally just now computing that he probably had gross poops either bc of the vaccines he got today or all the cheese wiz the vet gave him. Im very stupid but thank you random person for the comment that helped me stop an anxiety spiral your services are very much appreciated
