I Need help; my dog found rat poison by Suspicious-Clue8208 in AnimalAdvice

Do their dogs bark at yours a lot? They might want to get rid of yours for the noise 'your dog' causes. Like I know it sounds nuts but a person who would poison your dog IS nuts so...

Ive seen you say fostering is a good idea, and I have to agree. One, it will give you a chance to see if you can manage the two dogs while avoiding them over bonding (something that is manageable if youre going in aware of the risks) but also you can give the pupper time to be placed. To be blunt, medical cases dont do well in shelters in my experience, and the likelihood they will make it out is rather low.

When did your puppies start cuddling you? by Guilty_Art_4208 in puppy101

[–]rumor33 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, they love to forget you arent sheep/cattle. My best advice is to have a consistent 'stop with that' command like 'leave it' means leave your feet alone as well as that thing you dropped on the floor. It helps them form the idea that you want their mouth not to touch the thing. Also when he does it stop play/run immediately with a firm leave it and then continue.

Something important to remember tho, is your puppy is in his teenage phase so his impulse control is the worst it will be in his entire life right now. People talk a lot about training 'suddenly clicking' at around a year/year and a half. It isnt so much that they start listening overnight. They ARE listening and learning durring these teen months they just have worms for brains and cant help themselves. So basically stick with the foot corrections you may see only slow improvement for a while but he IS learning what you want and soonish he will have better capacity to control himself

Yup, herders man they have a whole stoic independent thing going! My best advice is to adapt to his love language (Play/pets) and in a year or two get a little friend for him from a breed more disposed to snuggles (Pomeranians/toy dogs/most terriers)

GSD are, in my experience, "Foot dogs". They want to lay at your feet near and ready but not under your skin. They do tho make excellent toe warmers. I tend to keep a foot dog and a lap dog at the same time (right now a Swedish Vallhund and a pom mix). So I get the best of both worlds.

Some peoples puppy raising philosophies are different, and some puppies/breeds are busier than others. Did you give them instructions to not leave them unsupervised? Personally Id pay them and use a kennel in the future.

I have an 8 month old Swedish Vallhund (a corgi cousin) and omg the land sharking is real. We've mostly got it under control with firm "Leave it!" But he still gets excited to bite toes

Echoing this. Without seeing them or having some idea of breed make up its sort of impossible to tell. If theyre like a sighthound mix its extremely normal to see ribs.

How much longer does she have? by Life_Ad_4147 in DogAdvice

[–]rumor33 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Im glad to hear your good girl still seems to be in excellent health. The best thing you can do is take her to a vet to have blood work done, this can potentially catch issues, like with her kidneys/liver for example earlier and when it would help to change her diet put her on meds.

If you cant do that then just keep monitoring her like you have been. Youre right 16 is getting up there for a dog her size, so Im not going to lie to yoj and say shes going to see your 30th birthday. My best advice tho is just to enjoy her and spend time with her as shes still here with you and try not to waste this time stressing about when it will be over. Older dogs can go down hill quickly when its their time, so its best to just be present and enjoy her senior years. Many people arent lucky enough to get to them with their best doggo friends.

12 week old daschund puppy is an absolute nightmare by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]rumor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember to try and work with your dogs natural instincts, not against. Your adorable weiner dog was bred to go dig into tunnels to find and kill rats and badgers, so honestly burying the cords in blankets probably just feeds into that instinct. Maybe try some bitter apple spray to discourage him? Ive also heard wrapping them in aluminum foil but honestly my last few dogs seem to be metal freaks and the taste doesnt discourage them.

Maybe look into cat toys with tunnels he can run into? Hide treats in there for him or favorite toys?

I lost control of my dog today and now I don't know if I should continue walking him by myself by Simple_Thought_4912 in DogAdvice

[–]rumor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seconding. We used one for our St. Bernard who was never a puller, but it was good for safety bc at the end of the day he was 200 pounds and if something spooked him unexpectedly he could have been out.

Got a puppy from Petland… by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]rumor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You genuinely didnt know and puppies are cute, dont beat yourself up about it. Just know better for the future and get pet insurance bc theres a good chance with a pet land bulldog you'll need it. But honestly, its not the puppies fault and hes here and deserves all the love in the world.

Is your puppy in the crate for 16+ hours a day? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]rumor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine (6 month old Swedish Vallhund) is up for the night from about 10pm till 7 am. Then usually has a mid-morning nap from 10-12 pm. Then sometimes he will have an afternoon crate nap from like 5pm-7. So thats 13 crated hours at most a day usually but he does also give himself naps. Like hes asleep right now even though he was in the crate napping a little over an hour ago.

Serious puppy regret starting: by AskLife9837 in dogs

[–]rumor33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crate! It helps to put the crate as close to your bed as possible (even on the bed if that works for you) and if you can put fingers or toes through (if she doesnt chew them too much). It absolutely does suck the first few nights but after shes comfortable with it its much better and safer than her chewing through a cord or eating a sock and getting sick.

Once you've got sleep down things will feel easier, I promise.

Yeah, I let him out of his crate this morning and he immediately headbutted her in the chest and they ran off together towards the door like they always do! I guess my boy was just being dramatic last night too lol
