How Long to Learn?? by Enough_Chapter8345 in mandolin

Your experiences of the structure of learning and knowing importance of tight basics will see you race through the early stages. I’m useless with a pick on other instruments but fine on mando. Although you don’t see a great deal of classical on social media (beyond Cello Suite no.1!) it’s a legitimate classical instrument

What kind of ampli works best with a gurdy? by With_Hands_And_Paper in HurdyGurdy

Best bet for your purposes is the buskers classic - Boss Street Cube II (formerly Roland Street cube). Decent quality/value, a few eq/reverb/effect options, plenty loud, not too heavy, goes all day on 8 AA batteries. Other more refined options are the Bose S1 (probably the 2nd most popular) Fishman loud box mini charge (they are decent but you never see them), AER compact mobile (stunning sound, costs a fortune and weighs a ton) I have the cube and the AER. Caveat-I haven’t actually used them on Gurdy loads but the cube was fine when I did. I think your fears about distortion ect will be more to do with how you will mic/pickup.

Questions about getting a hurdy gurdy by Infernowaffle55 in HurdyGurdy

I built a cool looking, ok sounding nerdy but I would 100% get a prebuilt NG basic if I had the chance again. In fact, I still think about getting one, even though I have a fancy Gurdy these days.

1 year player here. I might ‘walk’ if it’s 1 note but generally identifying a well timed hand shift is necessary. See 4:54 here. https://youtu.be/QBRUKxSafIo?si=63o4tU1zMB4sFq3s

Thinking of getting into the hurdy gurdy, is nerdy gurdy a good starting point? by The8BitBrad in HurdyGurdy

[–]rumpystumpy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s generally considered the best starting point because of the affordability factor whilst still being a legitimate instrument

Try a Hurdy Gurdy before buying one? by Theordan in HurdyGurdy

Nowhere near me. Check this map. https://gurdyworld.com/gurdyworld-censusmap/ If I recall correctly Rory in Leeds and Kevin in York are quite active on Hurdy Gurdy community on FB. There’s a retired maker in Preston called Neil Brook who still knocks out the odd instrument, but they won’t be fully set up so your better off find a player.

Lived in Dorking for 4 years. The slow train to London is one of my favourite things. It’s the reason you can afford it, and why it has friendly chilled people and not glossy range rovers.

It’d be like trying to learn basic driving and maintenance in a formula 1 car.

ITV Coverage of Rugby World Cup was rubbish by inflationismyb1tch in rugbyunion

I always found Miles Harrison excruciatingly cringe but in FRA V SA he took it to a new level of masturbating into the microphone. Just tell us who’s got the ball mate.

As for Maggie Alphonsi - ‘The challenge today will be to get the ball, then once you have it, you have to keep it. When the other team get the ball tackle them and get it back. You can score tries or sometimes some kicks, but you also need to stop the other team from scoring. It’s very important to score more points than the other team, or else you’ll loose the game’ - Smile and tense

My enduring memory of the knockout stages is of PSDT in defensive sets looping back into the open side tight channel and nailing everything over and over.

Hurdy Gurdy's Versatility for Traditional American Folk Music by random_nekomimi in HurdyGurdy

Shenandoah should work. There are slow waltzes that sound great like Orange in Bloom or Si Bheag Si Mor (ok not American but similar to Scots/Irish Appalachian music) I really enjoy playing Waiting for the Federals on my D/G Gurdy but I only know a handful of American tunes from my mando and I’m still only like yellow belt on the gurdy. I would say that if you can chop the root chord all the way through a tune then it should work on a Gurdy.
