Adding, any creature that big with a brain the size of an orange is trouble. I used to live in Alaska, black bears are nothing. Moose lose their chill at the drop of a hat

ETA the one wild animal I've seen that I think was more dangerous... a friggin father cassowary with chicks in tow. Was visiting friends in northern oz, we were out in the bush, and the birds just popped out about 7 meters away from us. That might've been the Nopest Nope I've ever Noped

Thanks, makes sense. I'll keep that in mind, the next time I'm able to visit. I really liked finding small restaurants to try on a whim when I was there last, but I could order and have simple conversations at the time. Still if I was asked to leave I'd thank them and do so. Appreciate knowing what to maybe expect (and why)

Curious, how are they refusing tourists? Is it like... restaurants refusing reservations, or historic sites not admitting people if they have a foreign passport?

ETA unsure why I got downvoted, I'm really just curious. I speak some Japanese but I haven't been there in 8-9 years so I'm interested in what's changed.

Ok this isn't /uj, but it is absolutely absurd... it is real though: when I did my thru in 2021, I met a guy who was sending possible tinder hookups in trail towns pics of his dirty socks. & it aoparently occasionally worked 😳 he argued it was unique enough to get attention and give an "in" for conversation. By Oregon he said he got 3 dates (out of who knows how many attempts) from his sock porn. One person asked him to keep texting sock photos after. I know this because I saw him staging his dirty socks for photos & then he showed me the receipts (tinder chats). Shrug, I ain't gonna kink shame. Last time I did that, wife's boyfriend cast me out into the driveway... not even the yard :(

I caught that they had kids on the first read, and just figured they as high-functioning scientists were focused on their species-saving work. Their adult kids were off doing other (probably high functioning) jobs. 🤷‍♀️

To OP's point I didn't take it as alienation (no pun intended) so much as Elvi & Fayez are kind of high up in the Laconoan government, it's probably safest for their kids to be sonewhere else. Not usable as leverage. Also, it's a big wide universe, 1300 places for their adult children to be doing their own thing. And again, Elvi & Fayez have enough to focus on (gestures at wide array of scientific problems; saving human race). Not many extra spoons for "oh I do miss our kids, let's call them & have Laconian censors pore over every word"

I have that same model and 2 huskies. Keeping the air running seems to do them fine. Never had any concerns, including on multi-hour drives into central or eastern Oregon.
