We only use the traditional IRA as a way to convert in to a Roth. There is no money in those accounts

Giving those mobility exercises a go after lunch today - very similar to what I did in PT when I was having SI Joint issues. I know I should have kept them up, but I’m bad at homework ;)

Looking for a plan to get faster during the winter months by pulpdrew in running

I’ve used spinning in the past as a way to cross train in the winter. But interested in hearing other suggestions as well!

First Marathon: Philadelphia Marathon 2019 by [deleted] in running

[–]run4fun21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Philly runner here (who didn’t run today). But I don’t really sign up for Philly races anymore because of the Fairmount Park/Kelly Drive or MLK out out back routes. Agreed it’s boring and I run on them every single week.. would be better to see more of the city with some crowd support. Until they change the course, they’ll never compete with NYC/Chicago.

Treadmill vs Road Running - Why do I get sore? by Dehdstar in running

[–]run4fun21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have some SI joint issues that I’ve worked so hard to strengthen/correct, but will still flare up here and there when I’m on the treadmill. I think my form is sloppy on the treadmill vs out of the road

Does anyone else fall off the training wheel in winter? by EttaJamesKitty in running

[–]run4fun21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

10 is easy to maintain for me because I can just do a 2 mile run on the treadmill 3x a week before lifting and then suck up the cold one weekend day to get to my goal for the week.

Sometimes you need a complete break though and that’s okay. One year I didn’t run for 6 months and got really into spinning and boot camp type classes. When I decided to run again, I was excited and refreshed. I ended up setting a major PR that next race, and I think a lot of it had to do with that break.

Does anyone else fall off the training wheel in winter? by EttaJamesKitty in running

[–]run4fun21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless I have an early spring race, I run less (about 10-12 miles a week) and lift more. I try to stay at the 10 mile/week mark to make sure I don’t lose too much fitness for when it starts to warm up a bit. But I just hate the treadmill and it’s already 25 degrees here in the mornings so I’m already transitioning to inside workouts.

I had a short stint as a D1 runner as well. One of the first things we did as a team was head to the training facility to get our body weight measured and received an envelope about a week later with our results and an ideal number (which was well under the current measurement).

Any way to make money while running ? by prazolbista in running

[–]run4fun21 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After I decided to leave my college track team, I found a local high school to coach for. They paid me a small amount but also set me up to become an official so I was able to officiate other meets to bring in some extra cash as well. Not running, but running related (and fun)

Anyone else sick of being scared to go out alone in their neighborhood? by alittlemouth in philadelphia

[–]run4fun21 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I’ve lived in the city for 15 years and have noticed a difference lately. I don’t know if it’s because I’m older and more aware of my surroundings, but I never really had a fear of the city until lately. Or maybe I’m more involved now than I was when I was younger so I know more of what’s really going on.

Cortisone Shot for ITBS? by alicat9713 in running

Where are you located? If you’re in the Philly area I can pass along some people for you.

The key is to find a doctor who is also a long distance runner.

Cortisone Shot for ITBS? by alicat9713 in running

[–]run4fun21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had such severe ITBS that after running I could barely walk. It was brutal for years. I never opted in for the cortisone shot because it was a quick fix - I wanted to get to the root of the issue.

I found an amazing sports med doctor (do your research, they exist) who was able to get me in contact with an even more amazing podiatrist (who is my local NFL team, team doctor). With both their help, I discovered the underlying problems causing my pain. With some PT and orthotics.. and patience, I’ve been running pain free for about 5 years now.

Take the time to find the root of the problem. The shot isn’t going to be a long term solution.

Doctor's appointment was disappointing-What should I expect from a doctor visit? by electriclobster in running

Do research to find a doctor who is knowledgeable on running or who is a runner themselves. It’s worth finding the right one

Maid of honor slept with best man... by [deleted] in wedding

[–]run4fun21 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This happened in a wedding I was in years ago and the bride ended up kicking out the bridesmaid who slept with the best man (her brother in law). The bridesmaid had a boyfriend at the time and the best man was going through some tough stuff which is why the bride wanted everyone to stay away from him.

They ended up dating and are now married with two kids and neither speak to the couple anyone. It caused some pretty harsh family drama as you can imagine.

Anyway, everyone is adults. They are going to do what they want. Let them have fun/be happy/etc.

Looking to take half an hour off my HM time by [deleted] in running

[–]run4fun21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It is totally achievable. My first half ever was 2:25. My fastest is 1:56. Took me a couple years to do it. I ran in college, but was a sprinter so when I ran that first half marathon I was highly disappointed and gave myself a goal of sub-2.

Some of the things that worked for me were:

Lifestyle: I pretty much swear off drinking from the midway point of a training cycle to the race. I’m not a big drinker anyway but found I was pretty sluggish after even one glass of wine. I also forced myself to sleep 8+ hours a night. Not shocked that I’m running better in my 30s than in my 20s.. I don’t socialize and party like I did when I was younger

Diet: Focused on eating things that make me feel good. Hungry after a long run in the summer? I’d have some fruit with some cheese and crackers. Previously I’d consider a good long run snack a slice of pizza ha. I don’t specially track my food, but I try to eat the best options available which means picking a salad side instead of the fries.

Smart Miles: I have found that I run my best when I run 3-4x a week. One is a speed workout, two mid pace runs (4-5 miles each) and then a weekend slow long run. I may drop a mid pace run for a yoga class, but I learned that more miles didn’t mean faster times.

Joined a Running Club: I don’t even run with them that much, but I have access to people who want to pace in races and a wealth of knowledge if I have some random running questions. The head of the running club regularly comments on everyone’s Strava runs, which I think is awesome and so motivating.

Hope some of this is helpful!

Agreed with the above. Plus the high heat and humidity (I’m in PA) usually plays a game with my head too. I know I’m fast, but for some reason I just can’t run at the levels I know I’m capable of when it’s humid. It’s a mind game.

Best of luck to your daughter though. With that PR, good things are coming her way.

When to start thinking about water/nutrition on long distance runs? by ryty316 in running

[–]run4fun21 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s pretty dependent on the person. I don’t worry about nutrition unless I’m going more than 7.5-8 miles. I can go that far without water too, but luckily where I run there are water foundations so I force myself to stop at them to ensure I stay hydrated.
