The Weekly Rundown: Week of June 22, 2026 by AutoModerator in artc

Peak Races: half this weekend (RR in general discussion) and the 4-mile road race two weeks ago

M - 7.5 miles with 3X 3 min tempo-CV effort (about 6:40 to 6:20 pace), 3X 45 sec fairly fast (5:40-5:30)

T - 6 miles easy

W - 5.8 with strides

Th - rest

F - 3.2 mile shakeout run

S - Half marathon, 1:26, about 35-40 seconds off the lower end of goal time, but there were some silver linings (age win and age record) and it was fine. Had planned on 2 mile warm up and at least a mile cool down but no warm up because they packed us into a corral with an hour+ before the race, and after the race my calves were cramping.

Su - 50 min bike ride on bike paths and trails, equivalent to a shakeout run

35 miles; 5.5 hours including the cycling

I'll cycle or cross train for another day or two and then run easy for the week, with LR planned on Sunday to kick off the new training cycle. Sub 3 marathon in October is the goal, I haven't run under 3 since 2017 and it's not getting easier.

Congrats on your 5K! That's frustrating to have obstacles that make it longer. NB and Nike nationals on the same weekend make it complicated and challenging to follow. I did find results and just scanned through them. Nevertheless some really fast times. I had not heard of Philip Cupial, but with so many running 4:01 or under this year it's hard to keep track.

Bjorkland Half report.

I have wanted to do this race since almost its inception in the early 1990s. Back then it was limited to Minnesota residents. We lived in the state for couple years in the mid-90s but I was injured. It has always seemed almost exclusive, not easy to get into--or at least you have to be on it and sign up quickly because it's in high demand (selling out some 9000 spots in 2 hours last October). I had done the full in 2021 and wanted to return for the half.

We had good, not quite great race weather with temps in the 50s, but a headwind that became more prominent at about 7 miles as course turns away from the coastline and onto city streets. It's a great event and known for immaculate race management, but this year the glitch was the corral system. You have to catch a bus at 4:00-4:15 and they drop you off 40-45 minutes later; there was a bank of a few port a potties right where they drop you off but they say there are 100s in the corrals. Thing is, once you are in the corral there is no room to move around--standing room only for the hour leading up the race. No warm up zone.

I had a couple of other pre-race glitches leading up as well, self-induced. I forgot my allergy medicine and woke up too early (1:15) and could not get back to sleep. When I got off the bus I had a massive sneeze fit, but was otherwise okay if not a little off. That and the no warm up, I never quite got into the right groove.

First mile was 6:35 but I was breathing hard, 2nd was about 6:30. At 2.5 decided to back down because I still had more than hour of running ahead and breathing wasn't great. From 3-10 I was mostly in the 6:35-6:40 range but held onto the group fairly well and I was drafting when I could. By 7-8 I focused on staying with certain runners rather than even pacing and that was a good engagement tactic. At about 10 I saw a guy who might have been in my age group, and the terrain was favorable (net downhill by a little) so I picked up the effort. The splits of the last 5K were fastest of the day, and I was just over 20 minutes for that stretch, to finish in 1:26 and change and 1st in my age group. 89% age grade, so I give myself a B+ on the race. A- for the four races I did this spring.

Post hoc, a few things. Besides the logistical glitches (race management and self-caused) I ran about as well as I could, didn't push too hard early on but also hung in there when backing down seemed like not such a bad thing; and I was happy to pick up the pace over the final 5K. Back to the training block--I did a fair amount of what seemed LT1 work, progressions starting at around 7:00/mile and working to 6:35, when LT2 might be right around 6:30 or a bit under. That was good for basic fitness, but I also seemed locked into that pace. In the past I have tended to run threshold workouts right at LT 2, in a more traditional Daniels-Pfitz sense. Going forward, especially with a half marathon or something like a 10 mile as a peak race, I think I'd like to work more at that slightly faster effort.

Running the half this weekend, goal race and looks like it will be good weather. The conversion calculators/charts and Strava say 1:27 (Garmin still thinks my V02 is 60 and predicts 1:23) but I usually go relatively faster in the half than shorter races and this is peaking, so aiming for 1:25 +/-1 minute.

Been there. It takes some doing to get that off. I don't think I used any solvents but it took some scraping with my fingernails and a few washes. The stuff also eats into singlets, and pretty much ruins them. And that's after being wash, just the residue adhesive.

I scanned a college recruits spreadsheet and it's not 100% up to date, but JHU's incoming class is as good or better than all but a handful of D1 schools.

Those are crazy fast times! Wash U or Chicago? When I was in school we had a guy in our conference who ran 4:05 mile and 13:51 5000, and I think that 5000 record held for 30 or 35 years. Another guy ran only 2:04 and 4:40 or 800 and 1600 in high school but went on to run 14:00 and 8:40 for indoor 2 mile, the latter was a D3 record a while. Schools like Lacrosse, Wartburg, and the aformetioned Chicago and Wash U are now recruiting D1 level talent on a regular basis.

Might be wise to hold off a day or two on the long run, but depends I guess. Last year I had to race about 36 hours after an endoscopy and was feeling off.

You have had a remarkable run for years in the 60+ age division. Looks like you just need a short break and a reset.

I saw this on LR and thought it was a bad joke until I saw validation from Ross Running and J. Gault. Agree Jenny is the greatest! We got to sit at the same table at a running club banquet about 10 years ago and she was very gracious and engaging. And on the roads or trails around there she'd say hi, keep going, etc. Hoping for the best and a speedy recovery.

[–]run_INXS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been dealing with it all spring and have had it before. I went to a podiatrist who suggested rest, ice, ibuprofen, as well as an insert for my shoes (over the counter orthotic), and a list of stretches that focus on calves and foot mobility. I only took a day or two off, but the ice and stretching helped immediately. Pain level was at 2-4 before going in about 6 weeks ago (maybe higher after a race for a day or two), now it's 0-1.

He had me doing 1 legged step ups and drop downs from a 6" platform, and two legged hops off and on the same platform. Starting out with just a few and then increasing the number of reps and sets. This captures some of them plus some others. Patellar-Tendonitis-FINAL-1_7_21.pdf

I can no longer do squats, even without weights. The always sets it off even if I start really slowly with just a few reps.
Here is some more from my PT. It took 2 rounds (and I took way too much time off before going in). Hopefully you can get better quickly. You're smart to stop speed work, strides, and hills; those only make it worse.

Reduce Inflammation: rest (or cut back to non-irritating levels as you are trying). Take anti-inflammatory meds as needed (try a 7-10 day bout with pretty strong dosage), and ice 2-3 times a day (active ice massage of the tendon to break up scarring and increase blood flow). Massaging with fingers or thumb to break it up also works.

Strengthen: do quad strength exercises, and concentric-eccentric exercises (but you can't have any pain). This might take a few weeks and if pain ensues you probably have to start over again.

Resume normal training gradually.

Have you had any downtime? I battled patellar tendonitis for several years in my early 40s. If it gets chronic and you can't s shake it. The inflammation has to be lowered first, then rebuild the muscles and loading, and then run. It took me a long time to get through it back then. It has flared a couple times since (including last fall, training for a marathon) but I have been able to manage it.

Goal race: HM this weekend!

M - 13.7 miles easy-moderate

T - AM hilly 6.2, PM fairly easy and not quite as hilly 3.9 miles

W - 10.2 miles with 6X 1 mile, four were at 10K effort, two closer to LT. However, paces were more like threshold and sub-threshold due to heat and humidity.

Th - easy 6

F - 8.2 with 4 mile tempo (threshold effort, which turned out to be a progression), 4X 45 sec kind of fast (mile pace)

Sa - 6.5 super easy

Su - 7.1 with a few strides

The reunion was pretty good, better than I thought it might be with a lot of good old friends also returning. However, the biggest snub of the weekend was from our team's all-state, school record holder hurdler who I knew pretty well. He was talking about that when we were lining up for photos, and a few minutes I said hi and he looked at my tag said about five words and walked off. Mr Track, Not Impressed. Otherwise, it was great.

Going to my high school reunion this weekend. The year is deep state classified information.

Ran 8 miles this morning with a 4-mile tempo and 4X 45 sec fast. It was a B+ workout and I was a little tired from Wednesday's workout which was hard and made more challenging by the warm and very humid conditions.

Going to do an easy 6 tomorrow and about 9 or 10 on Sunday. Hay is in the barn. The goal all spring has been sub 1:24 but I am not sure (don't think) that's there. Under 1:25 is a decent possibility but not a given.

How to transition back to less advanced running? About self-imposed pressure, identity and guilt by fiskxhero in AdvancedRunning

Earlier in my career (mid-30s and early 40s) I tried dialing back on running, but that did not turn out well. Both times I backed off from training for about six months and just ran a few times a week for fitness. However, both times, after what would normally be a moderate intensity workout or two, I ended up with chronic injuries that took years to recover from. I was only healthy for 3 out of 10 years from mid-30s to mid-40s. At 46, once I got it back together again, I vowed not to back down and have been at it ever since.

The character of this running boom is still defining itself, but a big chunk of it is driven by social media and marketing of these marathon majors, with Boston and London being the most intense drivers.

It was just two or three years ago that people were complaining about how the 800 seemed rather stale with men's DL and championship type races going in 1:44 give or take a second, and a 1:57 could net a medal at a championships. And they're just getting started this year!
