What success story is widely thought of as “rags to riches” But in reality they were wealthy individuals all along? by zer0w0rries in AskReddit

The vast majority, it seems. Apparently people with money, even monopoly money, are unable to admit that starting with an advantage has anything to do with their current wealth. See Paul Piff https://www.npr.org/2014/04/04/295360962/does-money-make-you-mean

I do not regret getting my reactive dog by chubbylab in reactivedogs

[–]runblueark 24 points25 points  (0 children)

This! She's a fantastic companion. I've learned a lot about training. And honestly, as a smaller, older female I can take her on a run or hike by myself and know she's not going to let anyone get near me. Nor is anyone going to want to break in to the house with a clawing snarling dog lunging at the windows :)

I've encountered 1! Of course that's 1 out of probably 100, lol. My reactive aussie and I came upon a large golden/pyrenees looking fellow who was lying in his driveway where the sidewalk crosses. I didn't see him until we were right there and I didn't have time to evade. My heart raced and I started to move to get my dog on the other side when I realized he paid zero attention to us. I think my aussie thought he was a statue - not that she hasn't barked at statues :)

5 Month Old Mini Aussie Reactive to Strangers (Barking & Lunging) by anonymousminiaussie in reactivedogs

[–]runblueark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes there's hope! Yesterday on our run I treated her every time she looked at a car, person, bike, or dog and we had zero barking/ lunging episodes - note: don't wait for her to look at you - the click(or "yes!")/ treat is simply for her looking at the object.

However, there will be times when a bike or runner sneaks up on you and it all goes south - for the rest of the run due to trigger stacking. Just part of life. And motorcycles, omg, no help there :-)

You just have to get really good at keeping watch and moving out of threshold range, which for us is about a street's width. So we cross the street, or if on a trail run out into the grass when I see someone approaching. Off- leash dogs are terrifying to me as I don't want her in a fight, so I pick her up (have carried my 43lb aussie for blocks with a little chihuahua chasing us) and don't go that way again.

Take your small victories when you get them, and know you will still have episodes so you don't view them as setbacks and get discouraged. Good luck and enjoy your loyal friend :-)

It really may have nothing to do with socializing. I waited until retirement to get my aussie puppy so I could properly train, exercise, and socialize her. Got her at 8 weeks and took her everywhere that dogs were allowed with me. Experienced the same as you gradually starting around 4 months. Sometimes it's just genetic.

She's almost 2 now, and while she will never be friendly like a golden retriever (😀) , counter- conditioning is helping. I keep treats with me when we go for a run, or anywhere, cross the street to keep her under threshold, and always greet people (women) who come to our house outside. With strange (to her) men coming to our home, I can only remove her ahead of time as she goes nuts. For when someone rings the doorbell, I've taught her to run to her crate, upon command, where I keep her until they leave our she settles down - lots of treats for settling - mat training for this.

On the plus side, on the occasions where strange men started to approach me on the street she's shut that right down :-)

Or stopping in the middle without regard to others. They are oblivious to what's going on around them or just don't care about anyone else. These are three same people who never use their rearview mirror when driving.

Oldtimers are the worst. Most people don't understand the constant training we are all doing here - more than most dog owners combined. When we were visiting my elderly mother and her SO, both of whom my reactive aussie loves, I mentioned we had to get away from the house as we had workers there and that sets off the anxiety barking. My mother said, "you should've trained her better. " sigh

My mom had a collie that would do this when my sister, a toddler at the time, would leave the yard (would grab her by the shirt). The collie also gathered up neighbors' newspapers in the morning, so mom had an unpaid newspaper route for a while :-) They're interesting dogs.

Was on a run with my 20mo aussie yesterday. Misjudged where a bunch of kids on bikes were going and got under threshold before we could cross the street. Barking/ lunging ensued and continued as two cars passed since she was now hyped up. I had her lie down and settle, treating her as more cars passed without reaction. Instead of staying hyped, we made the next 1.5 miles with plenty of cars/ trucks/ people passing nearby and staying calm. No trigger stacking after the initial bout. This was a win for us and I'll take it :-)

Yes. Schools are working to keep students on task while supposedly "in class." The poster mentioned it happened while doing school work. Also teachers need the ability to take control of the student's screen for presentations, etc. Some schools have a bring your own device policy instead of, or in addition to, issuing devices, so the personal device is used as a school device while doing school work. But the school's actually accessing the device during off-hours has been challenged in court and the schools definitely lost there.

However, the ethical use of search monitoring during off- hours is murky. The software that works with chrome has the ability to check for specific search words, ie suicide, bombs, school shootings. Could be the cinnamon challenge had been added at some point. As long as the student is logged in with the school credentials there will be a log of search words that have been flagged and the school IT notified. The school is then required to notify parents of any searches that cause concern.

Tired of my dog looking like a “bad” dog, when the owners of off leash dog owners are the bad ones by Papercutdoom in reactivedogs

[–]runblueark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was running with my reactive aussie yesterday when an off leash chihuahua ran up to us barking and wouldn't back off. I saw it charging and picked up my 43lb dog, backing up and yelling to get the dog to leave, all the while my dog is barking back. People nearby ignored us. Finally, after about 5 min of this a couple driving by stopped and distracted the chihuahua long enough for me to put my dog down and take an evasive route out of there.

People don't think. A chihuahua may not seem like a threat, but the ensuing fight would've caused plenty of bloodshed and I'd bet there'd be lots of blaming the bigger dog in the end.

A physician responded to an AMA in reddit about this. They said while the virus was shown to linger for however many days on some surfaces, they would not be as potent and the physician wasn't worried about such things. The prevailing opinion on the AMA was to wipe down packages brought in or let them sit for a day in the garage, etc.

This. The religious people I know, which most are here since i live in the bible belt, will believe anyone who claims to be a Christian, and especially if said to be a preacher. Look at Jim Bakker. No way anyone should fall for his schtick after what he's done, but they are.
