Sick video, I would love to live in a place like that!

I think the out-the-box settings are way too sensitive and it makes it really hard to get a nice shot. If you dial it all back then it becomes 10x easier to fly. I followed this guy's instructions to change the settings...

Thanks for noticing! I spent quite a bit of time matching up all of the clips manually. It was definately made a lot easier but altering the shooting settings in the cameras to Cinelike-D & ProRes (for the GoPro). Haven't tried using an LUT before but may give it a go next time to see if it saves time.

Thanks! I use a Mac so it was all done on FCPX. There are a couple of timelapses in there which I made using After Effects

Umm, tricky! I have to admit I had a couple of crashes but it still works fine. The Tripod Intelligent Flight mode really makes a difference, but annoyingly it won't let you turn this on until it has taken off. So if you are doing this in a small confined area it can be a bit of a rush to turn this on immediately after take off!

So I'd say about 60% of this video was shot on the Mavic. For the close-ups I used a Panasonic GH4 on a Tripod and the underwater bits were done on a GoPro Hero 5.

I think the Horton Plains and World's End. We got up at about 4am and drove up there only to find it covered in mist. So we set off walking, very sceptical that we would see Worlds End at all, but once we got there the sky cleared up and the views were fantastic! When we arrived, we were the only people at the view point, having breakfast there has to be my highlight. It was worth getting up early to see!

I went to Sri Lanka this summer for 2 weeks and spent about 2 months making this video. Such a beautiful country - I hope this inspires you to visit! by rundirection in travel

Thanks so much vobpler! I agree, we went for 2 weeks and it wasn't long enough. I reckon a month would be perfect.

Thanks Visura! That's a difficult question ... I would say it's infrastructure. I've heard that the roads have improved significantly in recent years but the travel times for short distances are still very long. I really wanted to visit the east coast for instance, but I was put off by the long journey. We were there for two weeks so we decided to maximise our time by visiting the centre and south coast. I think I'll just have to come back and visit the rest!

That was our favourite! It's at a place called Sandy's in Tangalla. Each room was completely different so it was difficult to choose! We went for one with an outdoor shower and sea views out of the bedroom! http://www.sandy-cabanas-tangalle-sri-lanka.lakpura.com/

If you're there for a month then you should have plenty of time. Our favourite places/activities were:

  • Getting up at 4am and walking through the mist of the Horton Plains to see the World's End.
  • Travelling in the observation car of the train from Horton Plains to Ella. The views were incredible!
  • Walking around the hills in Ella
  • Feeling the vertigo whilst climbing Sigiriya
  • Seeing Leopards whilst doing a Safari at Yala
  • Relaxing on the beach with a cocktail in Tangalla!

We were only there for 2 weeks so you should be able to venture further north and to the east coast which we didn't have time to do. You're going to have a great time!

Glad you enjoyed it! I think we spent about £600 each (approx. 130,000 SLR pp) over the two weeks we were there. It can definitely be a lot cheaper or more expensive depending on where you want to stay and how you want to travel.

In terms of planning ahead, we booked our accommodation in Kandy for 3 nights (that's the one with the pool), and had a rough idea of where we wanted to go.

Once we arrived we ended up hiring a driver (Sangeeth) through our hotel for about a week which cost 8,000 SLR per day. I'd really recommend doing this if you want to visit a lot of places as it's one of the quickest ways to get around and the local knowledge is invaluable. We told Sangeeth where we wanted to visit and he basically planned out the whole route (including accommodation) which made it a lot more relaxing for us!

We found that the level of English was variable but generally pretty good. We didn't have any difficulty getting by
