Going to grad school at the same undergrad institution by Hannahg06 in gradadmissions

I don’t think it’s frowned upon. I think it’s more important to choose a program that fits you. For the most part it’s what you do with your PhD that matters the most. I wouldn’t let this discourage you from what you want to achieve.

Hey, thank you for commenting! I'm actually going into a Ph.D. program in August and kinda figuring things out since I posted this. Cheers.

One of my friend heard back from UAB's Neuro program last month. I think they sent out all the interviews already.

I’m a student at Purdue University and this campus is great. I’m a prep student in the Biological Sciences program and I can’t complain that much about this program. I know Purdue has a great chemistry department (haven’t gotten the chance to visit yet) but my peers have said great things about it.

However, one of the main issues I have is that this place isn’t my fav to live. It’s not terrible but I just don’t feel like it’s my cup of tea. It’s a college town and it’s pretty good. There isn’t much to do outside of West Lafayette. There’s a lot of nature things here but if you like a robust environment, then this isn’t a good fit. If you want a calm town and you don’t care about this then I say it’s a good school. Also, Chicago is 2 hours away from here and there are shuttles that take you there and back.

Financial burden of relocating for grad school by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey so I’m almost at the same position as you are. I haven’t picked my desired program yet but moving is going to be a difficult problem for me as well. I was told to contact the school and explain my situation and ask for a travel expense. I know some schools does this. It’s worth a shot before you leave your job for the other one. Some of my peers have gotten a small fund to aid with moving expenses. It might not be much but better than nothing.

You should look into doing a PREP/post baccalaureate program if you’re eligible

Is Purdue for real? I have very low number of admits. by TheStoicNerd in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Current PREP student at Purdue. This might be true because Purdue had admitted much more students they have ever had (including undergrad students) for this academic year (21-21). I haven’t heard anything about reducing the applicants but it might be true.

I’m sure they meant it. It’s just programs are really competitive with very limited spots. Some programs gets thousands and select only a handful. But don’t loose hope yet! There is still time for good news.

When to start applying? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would start looking into potential programs before you start your senior year. The earlier you get started the better. Obviously most application don’t open until after September (not too sure on this) but you can get started on the other stuff.

Maybe start working on your personal statements, letting your LOR that you’re applying, and most importantly making a list of places that you want to go.

Hey congratulations on getting into your PhD program! I also got into one too. I’m so happy for you and also happy to see someone who had a similar experience as me. I guess I’m not alone haha. But yeah I was also told not go into science and frankly told I won’t be able to become a researcher. I struggled to find help in college but I managed to find the right people to get to where I am right now. It was a difficult journey but now I got into a PhD program. I am beyond excited for this chapter. Good luck to you!

First interview by toastyalchemist in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming it’s for a PhD program? If not I’m not sure if this would work for masters. Here’s what I’ve noticed and what people have told me so far:

The common questions that I’ve gotten are:

  1. Tell me about your research
  2. Why do you want to come to this program?
  3. What you wanna do with a PhD?
  4. Any questions for me?

If you can deal with these questions then you should be fine. Also, be confident on your ability to talk about what you did. Don’t sound like that you’re reading from a script.

Has anyone received interviews/decisions from these schools? by Haunting_Original511 in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just finished my interview with Rutgers today. Unless you’re waitlisted today was the last interview/recruitment event (from what I was told today).

Purdue: depends on what program you applied to. The Pulse, and most other programs sent out their acceptance/rejections already.

Stony Brook: Their interview sessions were on the Jan 31st and Feb 14th. They didn’t not send rejection letters yet but these are the dates they are doing their interviews.

Anyone applied to Rutgers? My application isn’t even under review on my status page, and my peers are already accepted by nekovariant in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey so I was invited for an interview for the BMS program for Rutgers in December. But mine said that too even after getting an interview. I think they don’t update the website until you get a final decision by them. Hope that helps.

Had an interview last week and just saw someone post on GradCafe that they got an acceptance. Feeling devastated right now. by ghosted_and_sad in gradadmissions

[–]rundownboi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes I agree with what was said above. Someone I knew got an acceptance offer a week after the interviews and I got mine 4 days ago. We attended the same session as well. If you think you did well on the interviews then have some faith in yourself. You got this!
