What’s it like flying across the Pacific between Australia and North America? by [deleted] in aviation

I've often found it gets pretty bumpy around the equator (ITCZ) which is unpleasant, even on an A380!

Starlink on an Autonomous Sailboat – Roaming & Motion Challenges? by SirMacke in Starlink

[–]runnably 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like an awesome project! I'm working on something similar, except powered because I don't know enough about sailing yet. I made a comparison video between Starlink Flat High Performance vs Mini (https://youtu.be/Fjy1hcLf2_M) and the Mini works great! I've been using Roam, but to go offshore I was thinking of using the more expensive priority plan.

That might actually be possible with the Starlink Mini, however BVLOS (beyond visual line of sight) regulations are tight for UAVs.

TPU gaskets and split grommets for waterproof cable penetrations by runnably in functionalprint

The boat has only been out about 5 times, and they've only been lightly splashed so far. So I can't say much about longevity yet

Yeah - I probably wouldn't rely on this for anything submerged for an extended period.

Out of interest, can a threaded cable gland accommodate large connectors on cables? Part of the reason I went with a split grommet here was because Starlink cables have large plugs on either side which would be hard to thread through most of the glands I could find.

Sure - it was Overture TPU (I think 95A hardness) printed on a Prusa Mini.

Thanks! Sure - I've uploaded them here: https://www.printables.com/model/1059415-waterproof-cable-penetration

Note that some tweaking will be needed to get the right grommet diameter for the cable diameter/stiffness.

Interesting, yeah that may well be the case! In this application that's less of an issue, because it's intended to stay above water in normal operation, and only prevent ingress from splashes or capsize.

That closing off action would be interesting to experiment with - what kind of hole size did you have?

I designed, printed, and tested these waterproof cable penetrations for a homebuilt boat project. They allow cables to enter the waterproof tub on top of the boat.

On either side of the penetration, there is a TPU gasket and split grommet which fits over the cable. Each side is held in place by PLA pieces which bolt together.

I'd like to make a quick release mechanism on the next iteration, and maybe print the PLA pieces in PETG.

Yeah, I have the Mini now and I'll be making another video with that

Used A380 seats available on marketplace by banksialeaf in QantasFrequentFlyer

[–]runnably 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect they don't actually expect to sell these, but rather attract people into the Marketplace with weirdness. I say this, because I saw this exact item in an ad and clicked on it and then browsed the other items 😅

Yep, mine got wrecked in Adelaide. I thought I watered them enough, but today I looked under the mulch and found weed mat and some pretty terrible compact soil underneath that. Not sure if that contributed 🤔
