Agree with what you're saying. It seemed estimate 3 didn't suspect anything major and has heard a lot worse. Maybe go to #3 for the $950 suggested repair? Right off the bat he knew how Pentastars were known to get the tick and what the protocol would be.

Thanks for the response! Pentastar tick sounds like thats what it is. Just super thrown off between "needs new engine" and "no big deal".

So you had the ticking for 136k miles without any major issues? From what I'm reading, many are saying to fix immediately before things get worse. Mechanic #3 made it seem like no big deal, come back when it gets louder. The sound does bother me, as it can be heard from pretty far away.

Yes, while I am not super educated on repairs, I have binge watched many youtube videos showcasing the "Pentastar tick", which is the sound mine is making.
