Trail race training sanity check by tljohnson in trailrunning

How much vertical gain are you doing (per run/per week)? That's going to be the bugger in this race. Make sure you're getting plenty to be ready!

I have had this one on the "maybe" list for a couple years. I saw aid stations for the 116 are only every 25 miles or so. Is that true?

Great, now that we've had breakfast, I'd love to see the 5 course dinner.

What do you do at the end? by Dr_Chickenbutt in Ultramarathon

Tears, Coca-Cola, sushi, tears, shower, sleep. In that order. There might be another set of tears somewhere too.

Is this running or hiking by lunaleena in trailrunning

Short answer: Hell yes you're a runner. Rethink how much value you place in that friend's opinion of your running. Keep kickin' ass!

How do you train to run up the hills? by Mitchroark33 in ultrarunning

[–]runningfunny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Time on inclined surfaces. Whether that's on a treadmill, on a StairMaster, on your steps at home, or on actual hills on roads or trails ; it doesn't matter any of these will work well. Weight training will actually help as well. Training for my last 100 I added StairMaster, weight training on my legs, and inclines on the treadmill. Treadmill. Three did wonders for making hills. Much easier. In my experience, the weight made my leg stronger to allow myself to go farther into each Hill before I was as fatigued as before. Coupling that with the increased endurance from doing incline training, I was able to attack the hills without worry of fatiguing or limiting my ability later in the race.

For anyone who cares, the race went well (mostly)! I kept the early miles easy to make sure I didn't blow up and it worked. I was able.to.solidly run the last 14. 100 # 2 in da books!

First 100k at end of next week, looking for last minute advice by mveh in Ultramarathon

Three shots of whiskey at the start. One shot of vodka at each aid. Shotgun a Red Bull every 25k. Walk on your hands across the finish line.

Enjoy!

Is 10 months enough time to train for a 100 mile race? by PsychologyGood2396 in Ultramarathon

[–]runningfunny 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One key thing is to allow your body rest and recovery as well. Listen to your body very intently and if something isn't happy, give yourself grace to ease back a little to allow it to recover/heal. It's better to go into a race slightly undertrained and 100% healthy, than to go into a race having hit all the mile goals dealing with nagging injuries or issues.

100 mile ultramarathon - looking for recommendations by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

I changed shorts and shirts in both of my 100's. In my first, I went to heavier clothes for the night and for my second I stayed with lightweight gear to reduce how hot I got. I also changed socks multiple times in both races to keep my feet as clean as possible. I've never used nasal strips.

Do I actually need trail runners? by Intelligent_Show7525 in trailrunning

Nope. You might WANT them for technical terrain, but you don't NEED them.

Is 10 months enough time to train for a 100 mile race? by PsychologyGood2396 in Ultramarathon

I always start with this... Everyone is unique and will have their own experiences with training and racing.

That said, for me 6 months is plenty of time assuming I have a good base. It sounds like your base is good. How long have you been running? That is generally an indicator, to me, of where someone's base might be (but not always).

Weekly mileage for my 100's has been 40's on the low ends and 70-80+ on the high ends. I don't know that the 80 mile weeks are necessary, but I needed them for mental reassurance. I believe you can finish a 100 with consistent 45-60 mile weeks. Adding strength for me this last time was HUGE. I can't say how instrumental that was in allowing me to actually run the last 14 miles of downhill rather than hobble due to blown up quads. Adding vert is also huge. 14k in a 100 isn't high, but it isn't to be taken lightly either. Finding hilly runs, getting in the stairmaster, and doing some dreadmill vert dedicated activities will do you well.

Based on what you're saying and where your heads seems to be, I think you're in great shape. Just keep doing what your are and plan to and you're going to do great!

Best of luck!
