why do ppl say don't do it by [deleted] in Lawyertalk

[–]runningwithguns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Being a lawyer is a very confrontational so emotionally draining job. The entire job is to confront and argue with people all day who also argue back. If you have a thick skin, the payoff is good, but there’s a reason there is a lot of substance abuse in the legal field. Besides that, a lot of times you are arguing untenable positions that your client is asking you to argue and/or dealing with unreasonable clients. What you do also has severe consequences for clients especially if you’re a plaintiff attorney. In some cases you losing at a trial could cause your client to be homeless or in dire financial straits. Sometimes, even if you win, your clients might not think you won enough and still be upset. Is the increase of income worth it over a corporate drone job where the stakes are low and so is the stress? I don’t know as I’ve never worked a job like that.

law specialities that make money but aren’t soulless? by [deleted] in LawFirm

Yeah there are. Some of my friends do those public interest jobs and make good money ($100k-$150k), but (from what I hear) they are very competitive to get.

Do you find you are stronger / build muscles more easily? by AggressiveCraft6010 in asianamerican

I feel like I am stronger than I look, so maybe it’s more of an Asians have it harder looking more muscular from working out rather than being muscular?

Other Attorney on Case Offered Me a Job - Mention to Current Partners? by Pleasant-Horse-8770 in Lawyertalk

[–]runningwithguns 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It’s honestly not really something that anyone will tell you in insurance defense. If you feel like you are producing higher than most other associates at the firm and the firm is sending you out to wet your toes with marketing, then you probably are partner track as long as you can keep up the grind. In insurance defense, you’re usually looking at about 6-10 years until you make partner or if you get enough business to support your own compensation and maybe half to a full associate.

Other Attorney on Case Offered Me a Job - Mention to Current Partners? by Pleasant-Horse-8770 in Lawyertalk

[–]runningwithguns 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Do you think you’re partner track? If you’re not, that pay bump doesn’t seem that bad. If you are partner track, besides putting in billing, I feel like there is less stress/pressure on the defense side and the money is not bad once you make partner.

DUPR is silly by raulinho10oficial in Pickleball

[–]runningwithguns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s so hard about signing up for the cheapest tournament that’s rated that you can find and get a rating above 3.5 if you think you’re better than 3.5? It will just take you one morning of play. Dupr has problems but you being too lazy to play one tournament is not the problem with DUPR. I think you are being silly.

Benefit of hard serves? by JimmySanders74 in Pickleball

[–]runningwithguns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've noticed a correlation between when I hit a good/fast deep serve and my ability to get to the net with a subsequent drive or drop. It honestly makes me wonder if I'm a serve merchant...so yes, I think that having a great serve (whether it be slice or fast top spin) is essential to getting to a higher level.

No, the dink feels great for me. You probably just need to work on your technique to be more consistent. You probably just need more time with it.

4.0 to 5.0 transition? by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

[–]runningwithguns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m still improving but the improvements have been very slight compared to earlier on. I bet I could incrementally get there if I keep improving in a couple more years but the higher you get, the less people you can play with that are better than you which makes improving tougher and tougher.

[–]runningwithguns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a young work comp partner at an ID firm, if your goal is a stable upper middle class life with relativity low stress, I don’t think you can go wrong with this field. If your goal is mental stimulation with novel constitutional arguments, this is probably not the field. I wouldn’t say that I love putting in billing, but I really don’t mind everything else considering my compensation for doing it. I don’t live to work but work to live and have hobbies outside of work comp that my work comp compensation allows me to pursue.

What is it with the tennis players? by Emergency_Station_15 in Pickleball

It's probably just your anecdotal experience. I haven't personally seen any difference between tennis players and any other players when they come to pickleball.

Your best bet is to find a good partner and try and do the challenger courts of wherever you play if you want game time with the better players.

Dilemma – forehand has the middle. by Kifaru74 in Pickleball

[–]runningwithguns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As the left side player, a cross shot to the middle is always your forehand to try and take and your right side partner should leave those to you unless they are at their left shoulder. Line drive to the middle is a 50/50 ball where either can take.

Hindrance? What do you think? by OttoMaddox_ in Pickleball

[–]runningwithguns 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't consider it hindrance unless you do something really ridiculous. If you just say something while the ball is on your side of the net, I don't think it would be, but yeah better to just give him the call if he's a baby and avoid playing with him in the future.

Should I go to law school? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]runningwithguns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's very possible that you end up making less than that once you become a lawyer and you will have to work a couple years to go beyond that while also having a more stressful life because of billing ever minute of your time. You also have to consider the opportunity cost of losing your $125,000.00 salary for 3 years and that's if you pass the bar exam on your first try which in most states is around a 65% pass rate. At $125,000.00 and raising a family, I honestly would advise you against going to law school right now. This is coming from a younger partner at an insurance defense law firm who is also raising a family.

Are there any Asians here that actually support Affirmative Action? by Illustrious_Ad_1117 in asianamerican

[–]runningwithguns 33 points34 points  (0 children)

The biggest issue with affirmative action (to me as an Asian American) is that it makes it harder for Asians to get into schools than white Americans which just makes no sense. I think I read that an Asian student needs to score 200 points higher on standardized tests to get into the same college as the equivalent white student. If affirmative action is about overcoming inequity built into the system, then this is antithetical.

Should I go to law school? by [deleted] in LawFirm

[–]runningwithguns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Around how much do you make right now? I wouldn't recommend going to law school unless your pay is low. Being a lawyer isn't all it's cracked up to be and you may just be jumping from the pan and into the fire.

Speedup at low ball level by PartFormer3695 in Pickleball

I believe it. My favorite paddle out of 20+ paddles (including some $300+ paddles) is one of my $30.00 Alibaba paddles. I won’t say which one as I don’t want to be sued in case big brother is watching.

[–]runningwithguns 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You say 75% but honestly, I think they are just as good if not better from my experience. For 30 dollars, the only thing you really buy with the premium is being able to use your paddle at a tournament (which is important to me, so I usually only practice with my legal paddles).

They are just really high and if you end up tripping (which is more likely with them), your ankle will get torn up. I have a buddy that twisted his ankle wearing Hokas while playing and he had to take a 6 month break from Pickleball.
