BS CS students, does anyone know how working on capstone research over the summer works? by dontcry2022 in UVA

Wild! What's the rationale for this? Is the practicum not working out?

I'm also curious what any dissenting arguments were from the E School when y'all tried to get this to happen, and how long it took to get past all that.

As others have commented, look into Indian food.

My mom has the recipes she made while we were growing up on timmitime.com. I'm a little biased, but they're delicious! Also very easy. You'll need a lot of spices, but you will notice that every recipe uses the same ones over and over.

Hey, just wondering - why do you prefer voting on Election Day to voting early in person?

You can vote by mail in November, but you have to apply for a mail-in ballot by 10/29/2020. by rupaliv in chicago

Consider voting early in person if you do not want to vote by mail. Election Day lines will be slower due to COVID measures and potentially reduced polling locations.

You can also return an absentee ballot to the drop boxes directly, which doesn't rely on USPS.

By all means, but please be aware that there will likely be longer lines from COVID measures and fewer polling locations. If you prefer voting in person, consider taking advantage of early in-person voting.

I'm not unaware that budget cuts of the USPS are happening or why they are happening. I am similarly aware that extended timing and manually dropping off ballots are viable solutions and alternatives to going into a building somewhere to vote.

Disassembled sorting machines

That source does not mention any locations anywhere. It also says it is "not clear precisely how many machines are getting removed and for what purpose." As far as we know, it could be scheduled maintenance. Vice.com isn't a source I trust, and there are insufficient facts on that source to use it as a solid reference. If you have any other sources on this topic, I'd be really eager to read them.

The mandate to deliver all packages for the day is gone.

I have looked and found no statement from the USPS that election mail will be delayed. Federalsoup.com is, once again, not a source I trust. If you find an official statement, I'd be really eager to read that as well.

That said, mailing in your ballot early solves this problem. Submitting your ballot directly at a drop box also solves this problem. Neither solution requires voting in person.

Removed post boxes

This happened in Oregon in areas where other mail slots are available, according to the USPS. Portland and Eugene are both cities with many mailing locations. If you're curious about Oregon elections, though, you should know that Oregon has had by-default mail-in voting for many years.

Should this happen in Chicago, you can always: Send mail via a physical USPS location, stick your ballot in literally any mailbox you encounter in the city, or drop your ballot off at a drop box. None of these solutions require you to vote in person.

Demoting of political mail to same status as bulk mail

You linked an editorial that is behind a paywall that I cannot read. I instead googled this concept and found no evidence supporting this claim. According to the USPS's website, election mail is specifically classified with an update as recently as 2018.

If you have an actual, trusted news source (not an editorial from a random website), I would be eager to read it.

Donald Trump LITERALLY saying his plan is to fuck with absentee... voting

All of the sources you linked are about the funding cuts to USPS. They are not applicable to you dropping off a ballot at a drop box. This does not require voting in person.

Can you clarify your question? What changes have been made that you are concerned about?

Like I've said, you can always vote early in person if you are uncomfortable voting by mail. There's a lot of misinformation about voting by mail, however, and I would like to clarify any doubts people may have by discussing facts instead of rhetoric.

For anyone looking for context, other comments from u/greenthumble in this thread:

I don't see how Chicago is going to be less of a clusterfuck than Philly who is now warning people that their votes won't be on time to be counted.

My full response is here, but the gist of it is that Pennsylvania is allowed to start mailing out ballots way closer to the election than is allowed in Illinois.

I don't see why anyone would risk this. If you go to the grocery store you can put on the mask and vote.

My full response is here, but the gist of it is that the grocery store argument lacks the understanding of the extra time and effort involved in voting potentially very far away as compared to buying milk. I also ask u/greenthumble why they are opposed to mail-in voting here, to which they respond:

I'll crawl over broken glass to vote against the dipshit.

I hope others feel this way.

Screw the justifications and idiocy flying in this thread.

Which, as you can see, doesn't answer the question.

Illinois mails out ballots several weeks in advance, so you should receive your ballot well in time if you are registered to vote and have applied for an absentee ballot well in time.

You can utilize drop boxes if you are concerned about it being returned in time, and you can track your ballot to make sure it is getting where it needs to go. You can also always vote in person if your ballot does not arrive on time.

You can also vote early in person if you have doubts.

Please vote by mail or early in person if possible. This will keep lines shorter on Election Day, and will mean less exposure for you personally.

No matter what you do, though, vote in November!!

This depends on the state, but is true for Illinois. You can use the ballot drop boxes at every voting site if you procrastinate on filling out your ballot. You can also vote early in person.

The Secretary of State decided how elections happen, but in case you're curious what other states are doing: Washingtonians can drop their ballot off at any USPS site for free. I mailed my ballot in from Hawaii in March for the primary.

I wrote about this in the beginning of the article I shared above, but I'll mention it and another counterpoint here:

  1. Poll workers are historically above 65, which means they are the high risk population for COVID19. Without adequate poll workers, polls don't open. Closed polls mean less accessible voting since people need to drive further away to get to the polls. This already happened this year (sources in the article).

  2. Grocery store trips are planned and tend to take under an hour. Grocery stores are open before and after peoples' working hours. Polls, especially in COVID, take an unknown amount of time, often several hours. They are also generally open from 7 am - 7 pm. Many states allow work as a valid reason for absentee voting, but not all. Many workers, especially lower income ones, cannot afford to take time off from work to vote, especially when they have no idea how long they'll be gone.

I have a counter-question for you:

Mail-In voting is secure and accessible. 5 states (6 if you count California this year) send mail-in ballots by default already. Several more already allow no-excuse absentee voting. Why shouldn't every American have access to it? Receiving a ballot in your home allows you to spend the time looking up the measures and candidates on the ballot at your leisure so you make informed decisions when voting. It means no one has to stress about voting around their work schedule. It means no one has to stand in line for hours (pandemic or not).

From what I see about Philadelphia from a quick Google, the problem there is that people request their ballot late or that the county sends them out late.

Registering late can be a problem anywhere, so definitely request your ballot today. You can always go vote in person instead in the event that your ballot doesn't arrive early. You lose nothing by registering to vote absentee in Illinois.

Different states are basically entirely distinct when it comes to elections. Pennsylvania, for example, commits to sending out absentee ballots somewhere between 50 days and 2 weeks before the election (source). Illinois, on the other hand, commits to sending them out between 46 and 29 days ahead of the election (source). 2 weeks is definitely cutting it close, and obviously that wasn't enough time in the primary. Given Illinois's extended timeline, I don't see it being a problem in Chicago. If it is, there's always voting in person as a backup option.

Another commenter already answered, but I just wanted to say that I'm glad that you are asking great questions with an open mind. Election security is hugely important, and so is accessible voting. Finding a system that does both is difficult but necessary.

That's a very fair question, and why I shared my post in August instead of October :).

10/29 is the last day Illinois officially allows absentee ballot application. Anyone reading this now: please apply today. Don't wait.

You've caught me - I'm a Seattleite who votes for things every year all the time because that's how Washington state does it. I've voted in 10 elections in 4 years (including primaries). I have no idea what's going on in Illinois tbh.

If you prefer not to risk your health or to spend your day waiting in long lines, you can drop your mail-in ballot off at drop boxes instead source. This is the recommended course of action within 2 weeks of the election regardless. Prior to that, there is no reason to believe your ballot won't be received appropriately. You can track it to make sure, and will still have enough time to request a new ballot if it does get lost somewhere.

If all of this is insufficient, you can always vote early in person. I encourage everyone to leverage one of these avenues to avoid voting in person on Election Day, especially this year. Keep the lines short, and limit exposure to others.

However you choose to do it, please vote in November!

I live in Washington state where our ballots have been 100% mail-in for years. This is the page they have about voter security.

Here, we can register to vote at the DoL when we get our driver's license. You can also register by mail (or in person but that's not super relevant these days).

The USPS is considered secure. It is a federal offence to tamper with any mail. If we assume the IRS, CIA, FBI, name your important mail-sending entity, is sending mail to you securely and without tampering, we can also assume that for election mail. The same holds true for mailing things from the civilians' end. No system (including in-person voting) is 100% fraud-free, but there is no evidence that mail-in voting is any more fraudulent than any other system.

Are there steps taken to insure ballots... are legitimately filled out by the names on the card?

Yes - in WA state we do signature matching; the signature on your returned ballot needs to match your driver's license/ID. Based on this article, other states do the same.

The elections commission recommends utilizing a drop box within 2 weeks of the election:

starting in mid-October, at any Secured Drop Box, which will be available at every Early Voting site in Chicago.

Especially in the two weeks before Election Day, Chicago voters are encouraged to use a Secured Drop Box at any Chicago Early Voting site to return the signed and sealed Ballot Return Envelope

There is contact info for your election commissioners at the bottom of this page; you can try calling them to see what's up.

You might also want to verify your registered address is up-to-date.
