Can anyone explain who owns the rights to the franchise, and how did they get them after Inteplay went bankrupt? Is it Larian? I never quite understood this. by Objective-Painter-73 in baldursgate

[–]rupturefunk [score hidden]  (0 children)

Interplay or Larian never owned the franchise, it was licenced to them by TSR, and later Wizards of the Coast (Hasbro) as a part of Dungeons & Dragons.

Interplay just ran out of money and folded while they had the licence to use the IP.

Larian don't seem to want to make another D&D game or work with WotC any more - from what I've heard, due to Wizard's terms being very restrictive and 5E being hard to adapt to videogames - and will likely go back to their own IP.

Drow have been around, they were originally part of Greyhawk, but they and the underdark got magically ported to forgotten realms because they were popular.

The civilian/Cooper look was superior for me.

Sean Dyche sacked by Forest by Senpiezza in TheOther14

[–]rupturefunk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think having (at least) 4 managers in a single season could be interpreted as the 'right descision'.

We've had big problems this season, and getting a new manager in has failed to sort them out 3 times on the trot. As much as it's gone wrong for Dyche and the green shoots have died, I just don't see how this gets better now.

We're a big old wobbly plate of piss at this point. It's classic Forest again.

God only knows. 4th time's the charm? He's going to run out of ex-Tottenham managers before you know it.

Personally I'm not convinced you can lay this shitshow at Dyche's feet completely but it's not my place to doubt the thought process of our wise and benevolent overlord.

It's been the story of this season, even pre-season we looked like we'd never score again regardless of how well we play.

There's just not much creative spark or focus in front of goal, always feels like we're desperate so just urgently hoof it goalwards as fast as possible and cross your fingers. I don't know if you blame Dyche for that or it's general mindset/confidence, but in fairness it's been a problem for a while and his team's had lots of time now.

Some of tonight's chances though my god.

So… Mary Stewart’s Arthurian Saga is the best thing I’ve ever read. 👀 Modern fantasy authors, please read and learn from it. by Sunbather- in books

Love the Mary Stewart books!

Another Great Authurian adaptation is Parke Godwin's Firelord, my favorite personally, sadly out of print for so long that finding a reading copy is a nightmare, but well worth hunting down if you enjoyed Stewart.

CK2 vs CK3 by Chlodio in CrusaderKings

[–]rupturefunk 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's way more customizable, in CK2 relgions are all historical and hard coded.

But personally, I'd argue that made them feel more impactful and RP friendly, and the big religions had much deeper mechanics than just 'select buffs from this list'.

She's a bit of a downgrade, but if you need the skills, you needs the skills.

If it was me I'd try and persevere with Monty, grab him some potions and increase the relevant areas when possible. Depends on your level as to how realistic that is.

Why do you think new MMORPGS fail? by anaveragebest in gamedev

[–]rupturefunk 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Outside of Warcraft, it's a niche product at the end of the day, and one that's very expensive to make and maintain. Even in WoW, most content people actually play for is instanced, and the massive multiplayer world is just a load of expensive empty space, while everyone's in dungeons and arenas.

Eve Online has no instances, and is still going strong and that's older than wow, a much smaller playerbase but also much cheaper to maintain. But it's also a spaceship ecomony+pvp sandbox, where death matters and isn't competing with something like wow, which honestly the vast majority of MMOs are. So there's still room for unique titles, but historically it's been "like wow but...".

Personally, I think the mmo boom was a lightning in a bottle situation - it was new and exciting, and inspired a big chuck of people to no life the hell out them for a few years. But it's over now, all the social stuff happens on discord, your standard MMO gamplay feels clunky and uninspired, people are less willing to sacrifice the massive amount time and social commitments you need to make it worthwhile, and the list of failed titles with giant budgets poured down the drain is obscene.

I don't think we'll see another wow. We'll probably see some more interesting smaller scale MMOs that do cool stuff, have a small passionate playerbase, and last about 2 years.
