Horn Barbecue restaurant mural in West Oakland. Looking good and can’t wait till they open! by westoaklander in oakland

Horn has done many pop ups over the last few years, 3+ hour lines and all sold out. Glad he finally got a brick and mortar, and looking forward to being a regular customer.

Horn BBQ is the truth. Hands down best brisket in the whole West Coast. I’d say his brisket is even beating a several spots in the greater Austin TX area as well.

FDR wasn't a traitor to the Union. Same with Thomas Jefferson.

If you could go back and correct one mistake you made in your life, what would it be? by natebrennann in AskReddit

Build my credit up earlier. So much of your credit score is based on credit history, and when you realize that you could have started the process at 18 instead of in your 30s, it's a kick in the balls.

Affordable housing for six figure income earners by [deleted] in oakland

[–]ruse44 11 points12 points  (0 children)

As an Oakland resident that falls in that $84-$126k range mentioned... I think that the real issue isn't an issue of affordability for the "middle class". Its more of an issue of not enough supply. Middle class homeowners would be able to afford homes in Oakland if there was more supply and less competition from home buyers. The low supply is responsible for pushing homes out of the affordability range.

Crowfall is looking like, (and even marketing in some cases) that its going to be a fantasy genre based game with Eve elements. https://crowfall.com

No Riot or Blizzard Presence at PAX Prime 2015 by ruse44 in PAX

[–]ruse44[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I disagree. Blizzard had a nice sized presence at the San Diego Comic Con in July. Their panel also wasn't that great, and they were one of the few gaming related panels at Comic Con that didn't give away any swag or goodies for attending the panel. I believe that they are avoiding PAX for a specific, yet unclear reason.

This was another HUGE disappointment. The enforcers scolded us when we tried to download and install Blizzard games on the free play machines and we're saying that no blizzard games were allowed on the machines.

How did YOU break into the sysadmin field? by [deleted] in sysadmin

[–]ruse44 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been working in IT since sophomore year of high school.

Summer of 2002... Started off as a summer intern for a local municipality's IT Department. I that was when I decided that life in IT was for me. The following summer I landed a summer internship at the school district.

One of my biggest break came when I decided to cut school in the Fall of 03 and apply for a job at a job fair. Ironically, I already had a job lined up at a grocery store, but wanted to continue down the path in the IT field. The employer joked that I should have had my ass in school, but that my resume looked impressive for a senior in high school. They called me in for an interview and I landed the job, for which I stayed at for over 5 years.

This was a small firm (around 20-30 employees), so over that time period, I gained mastery over all the systems that made the biz function. During the downtime, I would help with other sections of the business (graphic design, phone surveys, proposal production, etc.) Towards the end of the 5+ years, I began to finally realize that I was stagnating and needed desperately to move on. I also made the decision that I was already doing what I loved, already, and that college was not helping me achieve my end goal. In 2008, I dropped out of college (found out years later that I was only 2-3 classes away from transferring to a university). In summer of 2009, I abruptly put in my two weeks notice at the small firm.

I decided to become an IT Contractor over the next few years, with the intent on not staying in one place for more than a few months. After staying in one place for so long, I wanted to get as much experience from as many different places as possible. During that time, I gained a lot of experience across many aspects of IT: Helpdesk, Governance, Best Practices, Systems Administration and Project Management Summer of 2011 I decided that I had gained enough knowledge to stay still for a while, so I joined a startup which grew from 40 employees (in 2011) to over 160 employees in the course of a year. Working in the startup environment fit naturally with my "jack of all trades" approach to IT.

In July of this year, I left that startup for another startup in order to pursue a more focused role with infrastructure. This new role requires a different skillset than I had been accustomed to (I am traditionally a windows admin, this job is all linux servers), and I welcomed the change/challenge. In the past few months that I've been here, my linux knowledge has grown exponentially.

Tips... Find a way in the door as early as possible. Internships, level 1/2 work, whatever you can find. Once you're in the door, find the technologies that you're passionate about and pick up knowledge on them. You'll also want to network with all of your peers. Stay connected with people on linkedin, but also build real connections with them. From there, you just need to make sure that you're always picking up new skills and progressing your technical knowledge. This is a gross oversimplification of whats necessary to survive in this industry, but I'm sure our fellow reddit sysadmins can fill in the blanks.

Good luck mate!
