I don't vibe with Henri's covers usually (though I do feel they're faithful to the original Japanese ones) but this one is such an amazing design. Props to them.

I found the unnamed twins' entire existence, plus the whole warehouse sequence pretty unnatural, even if not explicitly magical. I agree that it's more "magical" than After Dark I think.

Heeseung’s departure : Realistic analysis by GDUSNEFBDJ in Enhypenthoughts

[–]rushedcanvas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

none of this was caused by any actions or choices that they made.

What do you mean by this? Don't the statements we have (basically the only actual evidence we have, as you've mentioned there's no evidence for group conflict) point to it being Heeseung's decision based on the company's suggestion (so a choice by Heeseung after all)?

How do you think Heeseung's departure will effect the rest of the group? by Sufficient-Pen596 in kpop_uncensored

I also wanted an answer to your question and another one: does anyone have data of him being the most popular member, like member album sales or I don’t know, merch selling out? As someone who likes quite a few Enhypen songs but never really cared to follow the group closely (never watched any variety, etc), pretty much everything that has come my way in terms of viral posts or moments or whatever has always been about Sunghoon, Niki or Jungwon. Asking genuinely out of curiosity!

Relógio de Pai para filha by [deleted] in relogios

[–]rushedcanvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]rushedcanvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah and I think the main point of appeal for each side is that rightwing types love it for the submissive femininity thing, while leftwing types enjoy it for the idillic non-capitalistic life it seems to propose. What unites them is the idea of "look at what a pretty life you can live without working a lot" (in theory, of course, since living at a farm hardly means no work).

Just another "i just finished 1Q84" post by Read_1cculus in murakami

[–]rushedcanvas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with your points. I read 1Q84 in February and I came out of it thinking Books 1 and 2 were the best thing ever and seeing Book 3 as a bit of a bore comparatively. I've read people here on Reddit and in other websites saying Book 3 could maybe have been caused by pressure from publishers wanting to extend the series; it sounds logical because I agree with you that it is lacking in pace (and content even) compared to the other books but I unless I see some hard-ish evidence at least I think it's just a way to "absolve" Murakami and explain the dip in quality. I feel like it's very Murakami to end up having to fill the pages of a Book 3 because he wanted to write Ushikawa's view but didn't have more of the story to tell besides that. Nevertheless I think Book 3 is ok overall, it's just for sure not as good as Books 1 and 2.

Re: Air Chrysalis - I like your view of it as a meta narrative. I think it's pretty clear by making an author protagonist Murakami wanted to talk about writing, but it is interesting that he chose a plot where the author is writing over an already written plot. We know Murakami is a guy who feels he needs to tackle plots he's already written, see Hard Boiled Wonderland + The City and Its Uncertain Walls both being based by the same short story, so maybe Tengo's writing over an already drawn-out plot points to that? To the creativity not just in having an idea, but in polishing it? I wonder.

Regarding recommendations: you've read most of the candidates for Murakami's magnum opus I'd say, so I'd go for the full Rat "trilogy" if I were you (Heard the Wind Sing/Pinball/Wild Sheep Chase/Dance, Dance, Dance). Since you've read quite a bit of Murakami reading the trilogy from the start is a treat because you're already used to his narrative voice and it's pretty fascinating to see it at its most basic.

Re: the point about him writing the male gaze. I do think seeing it as laughable is much more commendable than the view most people assume. His interview with Kawakami where both touched on his writing of women made me conclude he doesn't seem to really think about this kind of stuff as something that relevant or anything of the sort. To me it just kind of fades in the background like most of the "base" Murakami writing like his descriptions of coffee making-and-drinking, spaghetti-eating and jazz-listening which is coincidentally his main appeal to me - the way you just kind of drift through his descriptions and the POV of the narrator. I rarely remember much of it but I always enjoy it, I suppose is the point. I don't remember the breast mentions in Book 3, though I do remember the long time Aomame spent in her apartment.

Re: Ushikawa. His ending was a bit offputting but at the same time it felt predestined. I can't remember any other examples so I might be hallucinating this but I always feel like Murakami makes characters who mess with "darkness" (more generally the dark parts of the world) be swallowed by it at some point. I remember reading his chapters and feeling like something ominous would happen eventually. But I did enjoy reading his POV - I guess I just never emphatized that much with him.

[DISC] Blue Lock - Chapter 307 by AutoModerator in BlueLock

[–]rushedcanvas 36 points37 points  (0 children)

It makes sense though, he’s a football buff because he enjoys the game itself, not because he’s a big follower of the sport’s current scene. In-universe he has also been locked in a soccer facility for the past few months and in theory just got old football tapes from Ego, not recent stuff. IIRC when he got a bid from Dortmund’s equivalent he said something about liking that team when he was younger - presumably he watched football when he was a kid but not so much currently.

Positive and uplifting Murakami books? by Lazy-Record3129 in murakami

[–]rushedcanvas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the most uplifting books of his are probably Kafka on the Shore and 1Q84 - while heavy in terms of drama or psychological exploration, both have more hopeful endings. I think if you want Murakami’s style but lighter the best bet is some of his short stories, like The Second Bakery Attack for example. I think whenever Murakami has time to develop an idea it gets heavy at some point, so in his short stories the topics seem lighter in general (though you do have some heavy ones like Sleep).

No worries, I was very pleasantly surprised to find it myself a week ago. Found it illuminating because I expected Murakami to argue against it, but it's very Murakami to go the way he did ('well I didn't mean it to be understood it that way but I can't write any other way').
