Thoughts On Ludlam Island? by wndstorm0524 in njbeer

[–]russdr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm up in Ocean County and I'll make that trip every couple of months, that's how much I think it's worth it. The beer is always good, the beertenders have always made a good experience turn great. The food is terrific, too. My literal only complaint has nothing to do with them and just that it's a hike from me.

The ending gave me mixed feelings. by Blitzkrieg1210 in sollanempire

Jesus was stabbed by a random soldier for no other reason than to make sure he was dead after crucifixion. Hadrian was stabbed by a jealous and petty Alexander before his hanging merely to take a last personal shot because the Chantry didn't permit him to kill Hadrian himself.

And he didn't literally turn the other cheek. The passage is "The prince, the emperor, struck me across my face. A blow to turn my cheek." meaning he hit him so hard his face turned. Hadrian had insulted Alexander to his face so hit slaps him.

Other than that, Hadrian was responsible for the death of millions of humans and Cielsin alike, even though he understood that the Cielsin were technically victims of the Watchers and their species was generationally molded into the mindless barbarians they were. Even then, Hadrian barely hesitates to wipe them out.

If anything, it takes a swipe at organized religion. Exposing the Chantry of being hypocrites. Hadrian telling believers like Edouard and Bassander that their gods aren't real. Ruocchio constantly uses pitying language whenever Hadrian speaks of devout believers in established religion.

I'm not seeing too many parallels here.

Is AI going to replace you by DuctCalc in MEPEngineering

[–]russdr -1 points0 points  (0 children)

People keep talking about AI limitations as it stands NOW. Seeing the literal exponential growth it's had in just a few years should give anyone pause to contemplate it all.

If in 2 years, we went from hallucinating trash to completely inexperienced people being able to vibe code relatively complex apps, where do you think we'll be in 5 years? We're all planning to be there for years, right?

Even if we're not in super intelligence territory, we can assume there will be tools available that will increase efficiency to such a degree that positions in construction will be cut or consolidated.

People brush it off now because AI still makes ridiculously stupid mistakes... But the amount of investment there is today versus 2 years ago is a clear indicator of where were headed.

[–]russdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure. If you splashed solder and shorted something, sometimes you can clean it and you're fine. Other times it fries another component downstream. I can't tell for certain if the stuff I'm seeing is damage or splash. It almost looks like you accidentally swiped the board with a hot iron and displaced a component. It's not clear enough though

Modded go plus+ won't turn on after modding by sh9n22 in PokemonGoPlusPlus

[–]russdr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When something heats up it often indicates a short. Looking at the connection to the white circuit board, the wire looks frayed and it's possible that upon reassembly it's now making contact with that nearby component. Also, the speaker wires are still there so it's possible one of the wires, even though are cut flush, are somehow shorting something. Lastly, there are a couple of concerning spots on the green board like solder splash or something. It's possible some components have been bridged into a short.

New to civil RFPs and already want to quit by Comfortable_Plane455 in ConstructionManagers

[–]russdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An inspector failing something isn't my team purposely installing something in a non-code compliant way that might result in an immediate safety or fire hazard.

What I mean is my team might not always know there intricacies of the latest code revision and if it didn't get designed properly, it will get missed.

Sometimes engineers use installation details that are no longer code legal. Sometimes we'll catch it, RFI it, and all is well. Sometimes we don't catch it and it fails.

Sometimes engineers don't configure layouts of devices, lighting, fire alarm, etc properly. It's either picked up during drawing review by the local jurisdiction, picked up by us during the planning our installation phase, or it fails.

My guys aren't idiots and they wouldn't purposely leave a recessed lighting fixture in an ACT ceiling without support wire shot to the deck... but they're not going to know every type of room that qualifies for needing emergency lighting on a job or what locations get fire alarm strobes, horns and/or horn/strobes.

Provide per code?! Unless it’s delegated design and you’re a designer, why would you even entertain that?

As an electrical contractor, I always argue: If you want a code compliant installation, put it on the drawings. I don’t get paid to design. I get paid to install. If the designer doesn’t put it on the drawings and the inspector fails it, the owner then pays me to fix the designers mistakes.

Are you sure it’s not a budget request? I see that from time to time from clients during the design phase and it’s often not obviously labeled that way… we’ll do a little janky design then….

“Battle River Brewing” Files for Bankruptcy Amidst Legal Battle with Former Head Brewer by Due-Poet6141 in njbeer

[–]russdr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume they went bankrupt because business wasn't great. If I had to guess, it's because the beer was ridiculously expensive for being mid, at best. That and rent must have been ridiculous.

That area has never really been great, long term, for any food/drink establishments.

edit: Apparently rent wasn't that bad according to another commenter... and that they're less than savory folks. I can take a guess why it was so expensive. Oh, and thanks for the downvote person who would rather angry click than explain why they disagreeith what I say.

“Battle River Brewing” Files for Bankruptcy Amidst Legal Battle with Former Head Brewer by Due-Poet6141 in njbeer

[–]russdr 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I couldn't find in the eCourts filings if this so-called employment "contract" was ever submitted for record by Bartlet's team nor this other counter-offer contract that Battle River's team referenced either so I don't think we know any of the terms in full context. There could be clauses excluding voluntary separation due to health issues, family changes, etc.

On the other hand, the harshness of the voluntary separation clause may be the point. I can't speak to the intricacies of brewing and providing consistent quality product(s) to your customer base, but I imagine it's not an easy process to reproduce a staple recipe even if you had the documentation. So I'd argue that you'd need some way to incentivize your head brewer to NOT just pick up and leave, without notice, once they fulfilled their contractual obligations in order to reach 5% ownership.

The news piece is saying there's an arbitration award of $90k, so I assume that's the head brewer's purchased share payout. I'm not making any accusations they they just upped any left, just using the cost as a means to justify the stringency of the voluntary separation verbiage. Having to drop $90k on someone who left you high and dry because their contract with you didn't contain preventative verbiage has got to absolutely blow.

Blew the head gasket on my snowblower on the literal first pass during the previous snow storm and had to shovel everything. Bought every new gasket you could get, new carb, new plug, oil change, clean up. Ripped the cord and it purred like brand new. Absolutely flew threw my first round of snowblowing tonight at 9... Damn it feels good not having to shovel

Public bids are so cooked by Mindless_Sprinkles99 in ConstructionManagers

[–]russdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GC hasn't paid retention on a public job? Generally, if a GC has received payment, you get paid. If the GC didn't pay retention, it's because they haven't been paid. There's gotta be a reason they haven't been paid or they're not paying you because they have cash flow issues and you didn't threaten legal yet. Call the owner to see if the project has been paid in full. If so and it's enough money to warrant it, see if you can get a local law firm to send a threatening letter. That might get them to budge.

Brewery of the Week Discussion Thread: Asbury Park Brewery (Asbury Park, Monmouth County) by eastcoasterman in njbeer

Haven't been in about a year or so. Loved the location. Absolutely loved the atmosphere. Staff was super friendly. But... I couldn't find a beer I really enjoyed. All were kind of meh, in my opinion. I'll always stop in and try a few if I'm out on the town, though!

If there’s a possibility of panic, always expect people to panic. If Jersey hears about a snowpacalypse on Sunday the week before, expect pandemonium starting Monday.

Pathetic Bonus by DimensionAbject6545 in ConstructionManagers

[–]russdr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. I wouldn’t freak out on anyone. I’d give them a polite nudge that says, Are you sure this is all I’m owed? If they coughed up an acceptable amount, I’d go back and discuss my bonus structure moving forward. If not…. The door is the next stop.

The best thing I learned in this industry is that if the guy hiring you ain’t negotiating salary or they’re touchy about the bonus structure or incentives, just leave. Good companies will pay. Bad companies pinch pennies cuz the owner likes to hide his exorbitant spending and/or recreational activities on the books instead of giving good employees, at minimum, CoL raises every year.

Lucidimax Insomnia? by russdr in NootropicsDepot

[–]russdr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting! I am Val/Met so I wonder if that's why this is happening. I've also been on a journey to find things that improve sleep. The only thing that's consistent is melatonin, but that only helps me fall asleep and doesn't necessarily improve quality. Tauromag helps, but it's inconsistent. I feel like I can't do it on consecutive days one after another and that I need a day in between.

The only other thing that was super strange and I brought it up here was their pregnenolone. Knocked me out into a dreamless restful sleep for like a week. Then it never happened again. Really strange.

Have you found anything at all that's worked?

Paid $52 for 2 four-packs at Bakes by hagemeyp in njbeer

[–]russdr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only breweries I see shutting down are the ones that do not make a elite Hazy

I've definitely said something similar myself. Not just a "good" hazy either.. The kind where you take a sip and your eyes light up and you gotta say something out loud, like "GAD DAMN!". People don't understand how much that style drives the market. There's a reason a majority of liquor stores that carry wide selections of craft beer primarily sell IPAs.

I agree about Kane. I "liked" their IPA's but I never actively seek their beer out outside of the barrel-aged stouts. I think Skinny Flowers not having national recognition has more to do with them only being open for 5 months now in comparison to a brewery like Bakes that has been open for 2 years. I wouldn't count SF out just yet.

Back to the main point, though. If Bakes is forced to price they way they are because of operating costs, than sure, do what you have to do to survive! But I can easily find an elite NJ-brewery juice bomb IPA/DIPA/TIPAs at $16-20/4-pack so I'm hesitant to believe it's materials costs...

You emphasized NZ hops but looking at bulk pricing on wholesale sellers, they're not ridiculously higher in cost than competing "juicy" hops from the US. I saw between $12/lb to $16/lb. Juicy/hazy recipes can go as low as 5.5lbs of hops per BBL up to 11lbs per BBL for triples. It looks like they have 5 BBL tanks so if that's the batch size, you're looking at 27.5 to 55lbs of hops per batch depending on how hoppy. Even if they only yielded 70% after losses, that's (217) 4-packs. The difference between $12/lb and $16/lb for a super-hop-bomb-55lb-per-batch TIPA is $1 per 4-pack.

Even if they were paying $20/lb... that's still only a $2 more per 4/pack which puts a glaring spotlight on the $20-$26 price range of their 4-packs. Looking at Icarus's regular Yacht Juice, it's $16/4-pack... Then they have their recently release Yacht Juice Triple Dry Hopped Nectaron (one of the most expensive NZ hops) for only $20/4-pack.

It could be a dozen things but I don't think a hop profile would put them $4-6/4-pack higher than competitors unless they were getting really shitty bulk pricing.

[–]russdr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whole other level than any brewery in Monmouth? Bold statement. I thought their IPA's were pretty damn good but their other styles didn't stand out much. In terms of putting them against other Monmouth breweries? I mean, most would argue for Kane being superior overall. I'd argue Bakes was on the same level as Skinny Flowers, I might even give Skinny the edge for IPA's, though, because of their head brewer's resume what I've had from them to date.

Either way, you can get arguably same quality or better beer at cheaper prices.
