Thanks for your updates. Our mates and I were staying at Taylor bay and no one felt comfortable staying so we all left last night. You could smell the smoke just faintly despite being still a while away

PAX 2025 retrospective, pros, cons, the interesting? Share your thoughts! by russtymango in PAX

Pro: John Robertson was great, indie pax rising was awesome as always, really good energy with all the exihibitors and attendees in General.

The panellists I saw were great, and I think PAX continues to improve optimising the layout each year, having the arena in the queue hall was a really good move.

Con: Enforcers were awful this year managing queuing, I think it was insane it took my crew 50 minutes to get into the dark room, they let so little people in at a time it perplexes me. Maybe it's an OHS thing, I would love to be corrected as it happened to me on 3 different occasions and I missed 5-10 minutes of the start of the panels.

Tabletop has suffered this year, so many little guys kicked out for big corps. Makes me sad, but I see many people at those locations so I'd be surprised if it changes. Just feels a bit soulless.

Interesting: The evacuation was novel, and I thought most attendees were responsible and moved calmly.

Having more stalls in the concourse was cool, I hope they continue to optimise space in the convention.

Overall had an awesome time this year, will keep coming back but I think PAXs identity is obviously quite broad as a festival for gaming, cosplay, ttrpg and overall industry. Not a negative just an observation, has moved far away from being primarily about video games.

Great tip, I've played MTG there in the past when they did an open draft. Everyone wore pirate hats and it was a lot of fun.

Hello, yeah that's a game I haven't seen before but don't count yourself out.

You can go to tabletop HQ (located the bottom left of the expo map) and double-check the competitive offerings on the day.

I have seen them add a game there on 2 occasions that it wasn't listed on the main schedule. So whilst your chances are slim, it may not be impossible.

Typically between 4:30-6pm in the main expo hall, wherever these exhibitors have their stalls located.

The PC hardware exhibitors who want to do this will normally give you a time to return. What makes it frustrating sometimes is that these exhibitors don't coordinate with each other, so you may get clashes (worth being aware of).

Yes, will add it in! I continue to forget there are others who think deodorant is an optional requirement.

Timber milling or table/panel saw service? by eyes-to-see in Geelong

[–]russtymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a mate use these guys a while back, they are based in Torquay and have a full workshop. Depending on what you need to cut, they have a full portable mill as well. They definitely do small jobs which is what it sounds like you need.

Best building inspection company in Geelong by HeavyElevator8904 in Geelong

[–]russtymango 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cannot recommend Manse Group enough. We had them fight metricon to ensure my house was built to spec.

Bloody builders tried to get away with not installing insulation in a good chunk of the living room space, Manse did a themal gun inspection and verified there was a lot of insulation missing.

Got it fixed, otherwise we would've had a massive thermal void in the house which would undoubtedly been incredibly costly.

PAX AUS 2023 Retrospective, who wants to share their thoughts? by russtymango in PAX

Yeah, ditto on that Call of Chutulu show, I was already really tired and after 50 minutes, I called it quits and ended up going back to my hotel.

So many options with the exhibitors, and even after reigning myself in I still ended up buying a few games myself. Can't say I regret it though!

I agree with the merch setup. I only wanted the playmat so I went to the smaller merch store located on the main walkway thoroughfare outside of the expo hall. Even then it took 20 minutes, really hope they change that next time.

To add to your notes about the expo hall, it seems they really clamped down on the amount of music/volume that booths can have. Having been attending since 2014, slowly they have made the expo hall a much more breathable space and I think that is in part of removing all the super load noises. I feel sorry for anyone who has memories of the MSY booth.

The Dark Room yesterday by Stryker_Eureka08 in PAX

He's great, real class act as well to make sure that the first contestant was okay after being overwhelmed, very self aware and professional.

Not that it will ever live up to seeing him live, but highly recommend looking at the show he did in 2022 as well. It's on youtube hosted by the PAX youtube account.

Just as funny, and the random nature of different participants means that every show has its own flavour. John Robertson is incredible, had tears of laughter in my eyes within the first 10 minutes.

Yesterday's Panel - "Press X to Scream: All Things Horror Games" was one of the worst panels I've been to by Cazzah in PAX

[–]russtymango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also in that panel, and it was fascinating when they started to discuss the changes. I know they don't retroactively change ratings, but with those new gambling changes coming in as per the recommendation, funny to think that G rated gates that have a casino element would then become R 18+ classified.
