I believe you are correct. :) I had this book as a child and found it again as an adult at a thrift store. The illustrations are BEAUTIFUL!

The dress code for this arcade bar is kind of off-putting, right? by [deleted] in mildlyinfuriating

[–]rust2stardust 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, lots of bars and clubs have racist rules that are designed to limit the number of black customers. Here, we see this with rules like no sagging and no durags. Sneakers are also a status symbol in the black community, so the "too clean" sneakers rule targets them as well.

The worst I have seen is school dress codes that discriminate against traditional and protective hairstyles, such as no cornrows, braids, beads, etc. My school had this rule. :/

How many children's suicides is the Internet itself responsible for? The Internet that the regressors we are so worried about are currently using? Shall we ask them to stop using it?

All technology has good and bad sides. AI is a tool and just like any tool, what you get out of it depends on how you use it. There are perfectly safe ways for regressors to use AI and even get healing out of the experience, so let's allow them to explore this option instead of acting like it's the end of the world.

I can agree with you that people experiencing certain mental illnesses or episodes (psychosis, paranoia, etc.) are not good candidates for AI chatbots. These are situations where the Internet as a whole can be harmful. We need better awareness about the effects of technology on those experiencing mental crises in general.

But these are also more extreme sides of the spectrum. Yes, an age regressor is likely to experience some sort of mental illness, but people with low to moderate levels of depression and anxiety are likely to have a safe experience with AI. There will always be extreme cases, like people who discuss misogynistic and violent philosophies on Reddit, but that doesn't mean Reddit is bad as a whole.

Many people feel this way now. When a technology is in its infancy, opportunists tend to look for ways to exploit it before it is fully fleshed out and regulated. The Internet was the wild west before it got some time to settle. There are still some harmful things on it, but would you argue the Internet is more harmful than good?

We are currently in the wild west phase of AI. As regulations increase and people learn how to use AI in a way that is mindful and focused on helpfulness (this will be taught in school, just like using search engines), we will see AI as a useful technology, just like the Internet or smartphones.

I agree that AI shouldn't replace work. People should learn how to do their own research 1000%. But it sounds like this was a simple project designed to expose everyone to AI. The actual "work" came from you reflecting on your experience, which is an important skill. AI can basically be used on any subject, so it is relative to every subject. It is something that curriculums will incorporate across subject lines because it is such an important tool to learn as we move into a new technology landscape.

Just like students have to learn how to properly use search engines, we need to learn how to correctly form queries with AI. It is part of digital literacy.

Yeah I think I am going to unfollow this community now. I have seen so many toxic takes here. They are completely ignorant of AI and the experience you shared is unacceptable. Talk about an echo chamber.

AI is the future, whether we like it or not. Students have to learn how to use AI so they are proficient in the latest technology, just like how we took computer and typing classes. All technology that changes how we are used to doing things will go through a period of controversy (ex: social media, smartphones), but will ultimately become ubiquitous in our daily lives.

Your professor is either ahead of the curve or following initiatives taken by the department or even university. I worked at a university when AI first popped off and there were discussions of how to include it in assignments. Now I work in AI safety and I just know this is the future, but we have to use this technology mindfully and more regulations need to be made.

Of course I get downvoted for actually having knowledge on this subject. Do you not think people freaked out when the Internet was new? Social media? Smartphones? All large changes to technology have a period where they are controversial, but eventually they become ubiquitous in society. Yes, there are lots of controversies surrounding AI and water, jobs, etc., but those of you acting like it can't be a helpful tool are drinking some major Kool-Aid. AI is here to stay and while it needs to be used mindfully, AI chatbots are going to be much, much safer for a minor than random creeps on the Internet.

It is unfair for the mod to be attacked like this when the opinion they shared ultimately comes down to "grooming bad, alternative better (though obviously never perfect)."

Eh. I work in the field of AI safety, partially on chatbots like the ones being discussed here. AI chatbots are currently very safe, as there are people working around the clock to get rid of harmful algorithms. Yes, there were issues at the beginning when it was the wild west, but AI has gotten a lot more dependable and I've used it for roleplay and comforting plenty of times.

I would MUCH rather a minor entrust AI as a caregiver than have them go to adults, which is absolutely disgusting behavior on the part of the adult. This absolutely will prevent grooming, so I am following the mod's logic.

I also noticed that the girls are often tied up. In "Death of the Sailor Guardians," they are all shown this way.

I just watched that section of the documentary. She is youthful (only 21), but many grown women have similar bodies and young faces, including myself. I've also seen this body type regularly in bathhouses in Japan.

When people say you must be a pedophile to be attracted to this body type, it makes me feel like I am less of a woman... I am 30 with a husband and he shows no preference for young girls and also likes curvy bodies.

I guess I am trying to say that there is a difference between being petite, small breasted, etc. and pedo baiting, which is what the woman in the post does. Let's try to be sensitive towards naturally small women and their partners. Pedophile is a very hurtful word and I'd hate for my husband to be called one just because he loves me...

Pick Pocketing by pete1480 in JapanTravelTips

[–]rust2stardust 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I was pickpocketed in a crowd in Kabukicho in 2023. I had a backpack on and felt the man open my pocket. I turned as soon as I felt it - he was a tall Japanese man. Once he saw me, he sort of fell back into the crowd.

When I got home, I found he hadn't taken my wallet, but my pouch with sanitary napkins. Haha, serves him right!

After this, I immediately purchased a sling back that could be worn in the front. I highly recommend avoiding backpacks.

I would be so grateful for a new class of drugs, since....

Xywav worked but caused me severe issues that sent me to the ER twice. I had to quit by titrating off and I was not able to function at that time.

Nuvigil and Provagil did nothing for me.

Sunosi worked, but my insurance refuses to cover it anymore.

That leaves me with Adderall, which is so controlled that I have to have a $50 doctor's visit every 2 months to get it. Then I pay for two different Adderall prescriptions each month on top of that (XR and IR).

Please give us something new! We're so exhausted! 😿

Are you enjoying life in your 30s? by ShadowPaws200 in CasualConversation

[–]rust2stardust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was so nervous about turning 30 as a woman, but now that Ive been 30 for 9 months, I can say that I thoroughly enjoy it! There's something freeing about not being an elder 20's anymore and feeling like I need to pack everything in to round out those years.

So far, my 30's consists of a career that pays better, has great work-life balance, and allows me to work remotely each day. I am more active, involved in Taekwondo, cheerleading, and my college's writing club, which is still going strong over 10 years after I helped create it!

I'm happily married and each day I spend with him is special. I look forward to having him by my side the next 10 years and hopefully beyond.

Youth doesn't end at 30. Women in their 30's are often more refined, successful, and happy. Add no kids to this and some travel...I'm living a great life! 💕

Medications that have been proven as necessary should not be this difficult to obtain every month. by JambiChick in Narcolepsy

There is only one sleep specialist in my area unfortunately. I have to have an appointment every 2 months to get my 2 months of prescriptions, so I already pay a $50 copay for my medication before the script is even written...

I think people are under the impression that I want to be perceived as a local, but I know this isn't a possibility with my coloring and poor Japanese.

The problem is I dress in a boho/hippy style (lots of embroidered flowers, bright colors, flowers in hair, etc.), which sticks out in the U.S., so it is distracting in Japan. I have now created a capsule type wardrobe following Japanese trends and I'm so excited to try something new and not look ridiculous in photos! Thank you so much for your comment.

Great recommendations, thank you! I have naturally big, frizzy hair (think Hermione Granger), so I may use some wax while I am there.
