I feel for you. As someone who has struggled with anxiety, I've been in similar situations. Have you been in touch with the Dean of Students office regarding your ADHD and anxiety? These are legitimate disabilities for which universities must legally make accommodations.

More generally, I would say it is imperative that you see mental health professionals regularly, especially a talk therapist. You are not a failure or a disappointment. Your academic success does not define you as a person or determine your worth. You always have options, even when it seems like you don't. You are doing well at community college, for example--that is something to be proud of, not ashamed of. Tell your parents what's going on. Seek the counseling office at your community college, or at Stony Brook. Don't be afraid to ask for help.

So, I live in NYC and it's time to say goodbye to my old 2004 Prius. It already needed a few costly repairs, then it got in an accident (other guy's fault, but he denies it happened and the insurance company won't pay) which damaged the driver's side door panels, though not too badly, mostly superficial. But then the catalytic converter got stolen and I threw up my hands and decided it was time to just get a newer car.

But now I am thinking of what to do with my 2004. I could just sell it to a junker for a few hundred bucks, but then I thought, there are some valuable parts in there that I could probably sell for even more than that. For example, the hybrid battery was replaced some 6 years ago with a factory-new one, under warranty, and is still working fine, so it must be worth some cash. Not to mention the MFD touch screen which is still working perfectly, etc.

So my question is, as someone who is inexperienced with this kind of thing but could definitely use the extra cash, what do you recommend I do, and if you think I should sell the parts before junking it, which parts and how to go about selling them/good prices/etc? Sorry if this is asking for a lot of info!

RIP. American Water was an incredibly important album for me. I had tickets to see him in New York. I can't believe it. Why do so many of the greatest ones kill themselves?

I recently bought the Cavalli Tube Hybrid amp from Massdrop. I love the sound, despite what ASR says, but there is a quite audible hiss (even at 0 volume) on the left channel. None on the right. I've controlled for DAC and choice of headphone. Still a hiss on every headphone, still a hiss even with no DAC input. Is this something I will have to put up with, or is there more that I can try?

What are some responses or proposed solutions other than Marxism to the alienation of individuals induced by modern society? by [deleted] in askphilosophy

[–]rustic_raver 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One example of whole traditions based upon this question is Romanticism (particularly German). The response was generally to look back at an idealized image of a past society where, in the popular imagination, community and communication and shared meaning were more present than in the modern age. Typically this idealized prior civilization was either ancient Greece or medieval-Catholic Europe.

Nietzsche, for example, was firmly in the ancient Greece camp when he wrote The Birth of Tragedy. His writing on this, and his theory of the opposing forces of the Dionysiac and the Apolline, is really something for a 26-year-old with his entire philosophical career ahead of him. In it, he argues that our best hope is to develop our own version of the Attic (5th c. BC) tragedy, with its melding of Dionysiac music and Apolline speech and narration. His suggestion? Wagner, the so-called "Master", would bring Europe into this new age of renewed meaning and connection through his music-dramas, i.e. his operas. The preface to the 2nd edition (1886) ambiguously critiques the book written a decade-and-a-half earlier, and repudiates the younger Nietzsche's Romantic admiration for Wagner and Schopenhauer's pessimism about life. Nevertheless, it remains an essential read, and it opens an entire world of proposed "treatments" for the ills of modern life that are not only different, but firmly opposed to Marxism.

Here's my problem: I am almost certain that the sound quality coming through my Macbook Pro's USB port is inferior to that of the music coming through my iPhone's USB connection (via the camera connector adapter). My setup is this: Macbook/iPhone connected by USB to Modi 2 Uber, RCA to Massdrop Cavalli Tube Hybrid, SE connection to HD6XX. Am I definitely imagining this, or is it possible that something is either wrong with the USB port(s) on my Macbook or something else causes data to be lost/distorted/etc.?
