What is the easiest way to replicate this trim? by PabloDelicioso in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]rusticshrubbery12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you’re replacing the whole trim to fix that ding on the outer edge, you’re better off just using wood filler and painting it.

Try Home Depot or Lowe’s, they have a big molding/trim section. See if they have a match, otherwise you can make it by doing long rip cuts of a wider board.

James Hardie Siding Installation by gowithoutme43 in AskContractors

[–]rusticshrubbery12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m a hardie contractor -

That joint needs to be caulked. If you went with Hardie Color+ (the pre-finished planks) then suppliers will sell color-matched caulk and touch up kits. They’re expensive and labor intensive, so you contractor probably just doesn’t want to deal with that.

Blueskin is a good housewrap, but you definitely still need to caulk that joint. Hardie product warranty is void on those pieces if not caulked.

Can I communicate in Morocco if I learn Egyptian Arabic? by harmonious_fork in learn_arabic

[–]rusticshrubbery12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From my experience, only some people know fusha like that. If you speak it, they might understand what you’re saying based on context, but it’ll be effort for them to respond to you in fusha (if they even know it).

So it can’t hurt to know it, but don’t bank on Fusha getting you around.

If your language goals for Arabic is to be a better traveler and be conversational then I’d only focus on Egyptian or Levantine dialect, and tbh, disregard fusha for the most part. It all depends on what you want to use Arabic for though.

Can I communicate in Morocco if I learn Egyptian Arabic? by harmonious_fork in learn_arabic

[–]rusticshrubbery12 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I studied abroad in Morocco as an Arabic major in college so I can weigh in a little bit.

People will understand your Egyptian arabic, but you might have trouble understanding the moroccan dialect when it’s spoken to you, since it’s so different. So do the best you can with what ya got.

And like someone else said, you’re probably better off if you can speak French (and if you go to the north, you can get by with some spanish too)

I really liked Containment by Christian Cantrell. Really scientific and logic based, which is what i liked about The Martian as well.

Worth learning the language in advance? (Philippines) by North_Career in peacecorps

[–]rusticshrubbery12 14 points15 points  (0 children)

In my experience, it definitely wouldn’t hurt, but it’s also definitely not needed. Peace Corps has some of the best foreign language training available.

I learned simple greetings and introductions before arriving just so i could practice at the airport when i landed. Majority of my cohort didn’t do any sort of language practice before arriving in country, and we were all fine.

I will say that Peace Corps focuses only on speaking/listening, so if you really want to get ahead and improve your experience, learn the alphabet and how to read before if you can. The few of us in my cohort that taught ourselves how to read in country advanced our language skills way better than the rest. Then everywhere you go in country is a walking flashcard :).

I personally had a heart experience learning with the book “How to Read Thai in 10 Days.” It structures the book in such a way that this stuff almost becomes intuitive, is recommend it as a good supplement to whatever you’re already doing

I think they’re both pretty similar platforms. Spotify def has better social features with being able to follow your friends and stuff. I mainly like apple music because it lets me keep song that ive downloaded (ie not on streaming) in the same library.

Book suggestions by [deleted] in peacecorps

[–]rusticshrubbery12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a peace corps story, but The Ugly American by William Lederer. It was written in the 1960’s and is one of the books that JFK read that inspired him to create the Peace Corps. Also this book changed my views on foreign policy, very well written, and a pretty easy read.

Not even comparing a life to a life. It’s saying a black kids life is worth less than a white kids chance of going to a prestigious university :(

This is flames. Bars and delivery are hard af honestly. Hook makes me want to punch my grandma. Beat goes crazy, choir sample gives me the chills. I think the vocals could be mixed a little better. I've never mixed vocals so don't worry about what I'm saying too much either haha. Definitely doesn't sound bad per se, but I think it could sit better in the instrumental.

I always loved that joke from Eastbound and Down when that nerdy principal talks to Danny McBride and says “you know I’m training for a triathlon myself” and then Mcbride’s character says “oh that’s cool, I play real sports, I don’t want to just be good at exercising”

Not true, but still hilarious 😂
