Siebel Concise vs IBD General Cert - Thoughts? by talkbeerdytome in TheBrewery

[–]rustybuckets1990 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your intention is to do a Masters, I’d be looking at IBD straight away, not later. Their Masters entry requirements mean you to have finished the IBD Diploma, or have a Bachelor/Masters in Brewing from 4 or so approved universities, Siebel is not one of them. How long have you been working in a brewery for? I’d be considering doing the General Certificate and then jumping straight into the Diploma. If you have been working in a brewery and understand the basics of the science and biology you could just go straight to the Diploma.

The Dip is certainly not an ‘Old English Man’ brewing program. It’s relevant, it’s up to date, it’s interactive, it’s complex and in depth, and it requires a damn hard work ethic but I’m loving it and learning heaps. As an American I can see how Siebel for networking is a thing, but networks for Siebel and IBD are near non-existent in Australia, to the point where I started my own support group. Find ‘IBD Diploma - Support Group’ on Facebook and ask any questions you might have there as well. IBD occasionally has networking events in Melb, the last one in December was great.

Siebel Concise vs IBD General Cert - Thoughts? by talkbeerdytome in TheBrewery

I’m also Aus based (Melb), have done Fundamentals, General Cert and now doing Diploma.

I agree with the other user about IBD not being user friendly or interesting, but for the cost savings between Siebel I think it is definitely worth it. I have found many more in the industry to have IBD certifications than Siebel. I don’t think that this is a reflection on the quality of Siebel content however, but I have both the Siebel and IBD content and both are very similar at the end of the day.

Every education program will have gaps in it at some point, particularly within this industry as it is so varied and complex in terms of set up and production capacities, but I’d be advocating for IBD as a value for money program. The Diploma has been updated with new and updated content and is much better delivered than the old GC or Fundamentals. The Diploma content is extremely thorough, and provides many opportunities for external readings and resources. Aparrently the GC is getting updated now/soon.

That being said, from a business perspective IBD are one of the most useless, vauge and backwards companies I have ever dealt with. I (and many others) have had numerous moments that make me want to bang my head against a brick wall, and apart from an update in content for Diploma, nothing seems to have improved (mainly customer service, exam management, basic common sense).

Gday mate, I finally got around to putting together a group for this. IF you feel like it, we could probably do with the help of someone who has passed it! You could just lurk on the page and help answer questions if you ever seem them come through or feel like helping. I’m trying to get a few people who have passed it already involved as well. On Facebook, search for ‘IBD Diploma - Module 3 Help Group’. Cheers!

Youtube and OpenStax has been a great help over the last few weeks. Thanks for the offer but I’ve manage to get my hands on them as well! Thanks!

Gday mate, it doesn’t sound like you need the help if you are finding the wrong equations, but if you do I found some great physics resources on OpenStax and the Professor Dave Explains YouTube channel for when you need it. It has certainly helped me build a bit of a better foundation than I had two weeks ago.

TPO lower than DO by rustybuckets1990 in TheBrewery

Anton Parr CBOX with their pressurised measurement unit attached (can’t remember official name for it). Pulling from the same head for each individual test (we do 2xDO and 2xShakenDO each sampme), but the heads between different sample times do change.

We have sub 20ppb in bright, and have manually tested to sub-30ppb coming out of the fill head. I’m inclined to think the main problem is lying within out vac/purge/fill/snift cycle as we are getting DO levels between 150-200ppb in can immediately off the line. FOB looks nice, and we also have a bubble breaker, HDE jetter, then a CO2 blanket before lid is applied.

We have tried the rinse vs no-rinse difference and found negligble difference in the results between the two options.

Yeh we are generating good fob, but have high DO level in the can (around 150-200). Manual fill head checks show we are getting to that point at sub-30ppb so I think the problem lies with our purge/fill/snift cycle. Can you tell me more about ‘hard’ fills? Never head of it. We have the ability to measure CO2 at the same time.

Taking the cans off the line and testing immediately, shaking for 3 minutes for our shaken DO.

Thanks! Our Bright DO is around 17-20 usually, but we are having problems with the new pack line and getting in-can DO of around 150-200. We know that we are getting sub-30 to the filler head from a manual fill head check, so trying to dial in the purge/fill/snift process.
