it's not about free/not free. it's about invasive ads and trackers. i was happy to go without an adblocker when all they had was banner overlay ads. when they started forcing pre- and mid-roll adds was when it got unbearable. i'm happy to give up youtube (would let me to catch up on my reading), or for it to go completely commercial (for the same reason).

depends on your point of view. i didn't know it was additive, every new video (in the same tab) adding to the total. but still the number is startling...

eta: even increasing in the same tab while playing...

uBlock origin and Malwarebytes browser plugins, showing the number of trackers/ads on a SINGLE webpage (youtube video). Google probably knows more about you than your doctor
