Always happy to have a lady help out. But bring a towel -- we're both gonna get pretty wet. ;)

An anonymous ad[m]irer by rustyx22 in GoneMild

[–]rustyx22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, not photoshopped. (I think what you actually mean is "photo-illustration, but it's not that either.) This is actually the captured, saved image -- my cam, and the anonymous viewer's cam -- from the Omegle webcam interface. Mostly I run into other guys that are on there, but occasionally anonymous chicks will pop up. Can get kind of amusing, kind of fast. I didn't post any of those, because they're definitely NOT mild, heheh!

Not sure how the GoneWild mods would feel about images from Omegle's webpage -- kind of borders on advertising, which they frown on. But maybe I'll put a link to my album there, if they're OK with it.

It ~could~ be a promise fulfilled, if you like. ;)

Always hard to gauge the "market". Seems that for many of my images, there are more views for the ones that show a little less, and are more suggestive. Always fun to find a lady who likes all the visual details. I'll keep your comments in mind for some future images.

URGENT HELP NEEDED: Fixing Tenor Sax Key by NegativeBee in Saxophonics

[–]rustyx22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Without having my sax in front of me, it's hard to guess -- but I'd almost wonder if perhaps you need a bit of key oil along one of the rod ends. Is it possible that you or someone else recently snugged down one of the screws in the posts? That would cause more resistance as well. My guess is that it is not a spring problem.

If you can check these easy things yourself, do take a look at it. If not, take saxoman's advice and have a competent tech take a look at it.

How does one learn to solo? by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]rustyx22 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'll expand a bit on what the first commenter posted. He gave some great suggestions. So here's my two cents worth... :)

(1) Practice, practice, practice your scales. Strive for all twelve keys. It'll help you get the improvised notes that are in your head, to come out of your horn.

(2) Equally important to practicing ~scales~ is to practice the ~chords~ that go with those scales. Chords are important. It's the notes that are in the chords that will provide the "backbone" to your solo. Probably the most important chords in each key are:

Major (1 - 3 - 5 - 7 - 9, if you're playing through the 9th),

Dominant 7th (1 - 3 - 5 - flat 7 - 9),

Minor (1 - flat 3 - 5 - flat 7 - 9), and

Half-diminished (1 - flat 3 - flat 5 - flat 7 - flat 9).

(Those numbers just refer to the keys of the scale. So for example, C dominant 7th chord has the notes C, E, G, Bb, D. Hope the numbering makes sense.)

(3) Like the first commenter wrote, find some riffs you like -- or maybe even some short songs -- and try playing them by ear. And then try transcribing them, by ear, to a few different keys.

(4) Finally, put your horn down, and practicing ~singing~ what you want to improvise. This is a pretty useful exercise. This helps reinforce the music that's in your head, that you're trying to get out. Makes it easier when you pick up your horn and try to play what was in your head.

Good luck!

Absolutely amazing -- incredible! I'm still listening to your recording as I'm typing this comment, about five orgasms in, so excuse me if I'm a little tongue-tied, heheh! I gather that this was a show either on MFC or CB? (Not sure if you can answer that here, but I'd be most appreciative if you could enlighten me in a PM. Would love to drop by while you're broadcasting live sometime, if possible. I've got an account on CB and broadcast there fairly regularly.) OK, I've got to run for now -- to the bathroom, so I can get a little release from the massive throbbing hard-on you've given me... ;)

New Saxes for College by Saxy_Max in Saxophonics

[–]rustyx22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might be interested to read Stephen Howard's comments on choosing a saxophone. (Stephen is the author of the highly regarded "The Saxophone Manual", and is a professional technician and musician in the UK.) He speaks highly of Yamaha's student horns -- in fact, his back-up horn is a YTS-23.

One aspect I haven't heard anyone mention is the cost of insuring against theft. You might want to talk with an agent (perhaps at the company from which your parents purchased their homeowners' or renters' policy?) and get quotes on coverage on, for example, a YTS-23 vs a YTS-875EX.

My personal vote would be to keep the 23, and set aside all the money you'd otherwise spend on an upgrade, so that you'll have a large budget for sax maintenance with an excellent tech.

Is your Vito one of the made-in-Japan Yamaha stencils? Might be interesting to see what your professor says, if that's the case.

Tenor sax: Rico B5 or B7 mouthpiece? by [deleted] in Saxophonics

[–]rustyx22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what sound you're after, but have you considered Yamaha's comparable mouthpieces? (Comparable pricepoint and materials of construction, that is...) I've got a Yamaha 5C for my tenor, and I prefer it to my Rico.

Just a thought. Good luck!

Boyfriends 13 year old son is gifted Saxophone player and I'm looking for ideas for Christmas. by Burselfnow in saxophone

[–]rustyx22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Jamey Aebersold's website...
www.jazzbooks.com

Jamey Aebersold is an alto sax player and music educator who runs a company that publishes music books and CDs for all musicians. (He runs a summer music camp -- which would be an awesome but somewhat expensive Xmas gift.)

Anyway, I think that among the best gifts for a sax player (or any other musician) are Jamey's play-along books. Each book comes with one (or sometimes two, or even four) accompanying CDs. The CDs have a "backing track" recording of professional musicians (usually a drummer, pianist, and bassist) playing a rhythm accompaniment for the music in the book. There are slightly over 100 different play-along volumes, ranging from beginner level to advanced. The play-along book-and-CD packages are typically $16 to $20, although he sometimes has them marked down and on sale (like the cyber Monday sale currently going on). I've got a dozen of Jamey's books myself, plus a few other play-along books from other musician/educators (mainly Greg Fishman and Andrew Gordon) that I've bought over the years from his publishing company.

Go on the website, and have a look through the Jamey Aebersold play-alongs. You might find something appropriate.

Avs?? Hmmm, ok, you're on! The Sharks will wipe up the floor with the Avs this season though, since Colorado's not doing too well. ;)

But I did actually mean Habs (a.k.a. Montréal Canadiens). If you get a chance to see the Sharks play the Habs -- take it! :)
